If there is a DNA match found it's unlikely to be Bailey's. It would have been found long since.
As for the DNA being "kept in safe keeping", what, like the gate, and Bailey's coat? seriously! The French team said most of the evidence bags had been opened and some left unsealed. The only way Bailey will be eliminated is if there is a safe conviction of the real killer. Until then, lack of evidence against him does not mean he is innocent, and from today's Indo;
No. What I meant is that one of the crazies put something at the scene.
Just out of interest, what makes these people "crazies"? It's human nature to be interested in things like that. For instance if I ever went to Dallas Texas the first and possibly only thing I'd be doing is going straight to Dealy Plaza. Does that make me crazy?
On the face of it it looks like a very odd exercise by the Gardai.
But I doubt it's being done for the sake of something being seen to be done.
The previous generation of west Cork Gardai have (in my opinion much of it unfairly) been lambasted for their performance in this case.
I don't think the current generation want to be seen in a similar light.
Even though I know nothing about investigations or investigating there probably is some procedure or task that can be carried out to gather, or confirm, or clarify something related to the scene or existing evidence or something.
I really doubt they are doing this for show, but equally nothing may come of it.
Im not talking about a quick drive past though, oh so thats where it happened kindof way. You know the kinda crazies Im talking about.
Ya he probably can't be ruled out definitively
Don't they already have Bailey's DNA ? .Didn't he give a sample if I recall
No idea what you mean by heavy lifting but yeah, it's confirmed by Lara Marlowe a journalist for the Irish Times who was one of the few people given a copy of the state pathologists report into the murder.
Most of the amateur detectives on here have failed to find the report she wrote after reading it even though it's been in the public domain since 2008. I put up a link to it a few days ago, if you're interested I'm sure you'll be able to find it.
The Colin pitchfork case is interesting if they have DNA
Seems odd though bailey offering to provide samples and the gardai having DNA from her fingernails and no word on this whether he was eliminated or whatever
Ah yeah, it's unlikely to be Bailey's, sure.
He's only the self confessed number one suspect that has no alibi for the time of the murder and the guy who has admitted to numerous people that he actually murdered the lady.
Unlikely to be his, okeydokey.
You're not making sense ?
Btw I suspect bailey did it
How could the DNA under the fingernails be connected to the recent activity on the scene?
If they've had this DNA all this time, and a sample of Bailey's, why is the connection only being made now?
"Ah yeah, it's unlikely to be Bailey's, sure."
Cork talk
Sarcasm.
Lowest form!
Bailey.
No, the lowest form is admitting to having committed the murder several times to several people and then claiming that was sarcasm.
If the Gardai do indeed have DNA evidence scraped from beneath Sophie's fingernails, one would ask the question why they haven't compared it to Bailey's DNA before now. That would either rule him in or rule him out. I mean if it exists, it's existed for the last 26 years.
Even if it wasn't Baileys they could do a DNA sampling drive over such a low population area, and use forensic genealogy failing that.
Can a state pathologist confirm DNA being present? This sounds like Chinese whispers.
Possibly because the sample may have not been sufficient with the technologies available until now
That's possible for sure. New technology allows DNA extraction from porous surfaces such as concrete blocks but if it's DNA under fingernails, well the technology to test that has been around for years.
from the Web
'Although foreign DNA may persist under fingernails in a harsh environment for up to 48 h [2, 11, 12], Matte et al. [7] found that even after the deliberate deposition of cellular debris through scratching, foreign DNA rapidly decays beyond 6 h.'
She was definately there more than 24 hours before forensics.
Wasn't there a case in Dublin where the murderer thought the DNA was decayed
Marilyn rynn case I think
However long the body was there before being discovered it was another 28 hours on top of that before the pathologist was at the scene.
Time is of the essence in collecting forensic evidence, some was collected from under Sophie's fingernails and there were hairs stuck by dried blood to one hand. These have been tested a few times over the years as advances in DNA testing has improved but have not been able to yield definitive proof, yet.
Her body wasn't found for 2 weeks, the frosty weather prevented the decay.
Monsieur Gazeau , Sophie's uncle, now getting stuck into Bailey re the timing of when he knew who the victim was.
Unfortunately he is citing Cassidy and Caroline Leftwick, neither of whose testimony stand up to scrutiny;
Yes that murder happened over an Xmas period. The body was undetected for two week.
The killer voluntarily gave a blood sample having searched how long DNA might be preserved for and felt confident he was safe.
However the sub zero temperatures over that period meant the DNA had been preserved for longer.
I don't know if that DNA was open to the elements though.
Blood Semen or skin cells can be preserved.
According to Ralph Riegal in today's Indo the file unlikely to be ready to go to the DPP until 2024.
"The cold-case team hopes to be able to make recommendations on the basis of their review, with the aim of ensuring the updated garda case file secures a decision to prosecute by the DPP."
It's starting to look a lot like DNA will not play a part in any conviction;
How do you know what time the attack was? If Sophie had a watch on and it broke in the struggle it was conveniently lifted. Nick Foster's correspondent from Schull seemed to infer they had seen a watch on the body but wanted confirmation from him that later it was gone. To me only someone who wanted to disguise the time of the attack would do that. Personally I believe that correspondent is Shirley, but that is only my opinion.
