So first they have to get your pin, then they have to clone your facial recognition. Lastly you are then lured into a car that's supposed to be a taxi. (Trying not to use the term Fake Taxi)
These scammers are truly masterful, who writes this crap that makes headlines in the Indo.

Just goes to prove that cash is king.
Just goes to prove there are idiots out there who let this happen to them.
Probably lured in by the chase of some punani.
I doubt this is actually happening. Urban myth makes front page.
Seems very far fetched and a lot has to go right for the scammers to have a payday. Also sounds like bloody hard work for them.
I call shenanigans on this story
It sounds a bit like this which I heard on the BBC a year ago. In that case someone had their drink spiked. Listen just after one minute.

One guy called Liveline to share his apparent experience.
There is a phenomenon of fake taxis, Gardai have made arrests. Also arriving at Dublin Airport, announcements are made to warn visitors of bogus taxis. As to getting hold of phone, it’s not mentioned in this article.
So they need to rob your phone while you have it unlocked and while you are using a banking app??
Apparently they need to observe you putting in your pin code then hope your banking pin code is the same.
oh right...sounds like a foolproof plan if ever I heard one
Sounds like a mission impossible plot alright. I can't see this being widespread organised crime
Maybe they hope the other pin codes are on Notes or equivalent app. 🤔
I have dorked (learning infosec) a few stray lists of emails & passwords lying about in cyberspace. It is just amazing the more easily guessable passwords people use eg a typical one might be say garrymcmulty40@gmail.com and password garry40 One went something like “mypassword”
Can they put out a warning next week that women can become pregnant after sitting on a barstool? 😂
I dunno man, I mean .. I got some bad ideas; I dunno
I heard of one case of this, before anything hit the press, where the son of a workmate was targeted while socialising around Baggot St on the night of the All Blacks rugby match in early November. In addition to the fake taxi angle, the victim was also drugged in some way, leaving him groggy and unable to protect his phone or prevent them from using facial recognition.
I was fairly dubious at the time, but I've seen two or three separate reports of similar incidents since them.
The whole elaborate scam is a bit fair fetched but the principle is not, if a person knows your PIN they can reset and add a new face to your Iphone face ID. If your Face ID is used to authenticate your banking app then Job done or even apple pay. There is a truth in the story!
This is why I roll my eyes up to anyone complaining of having to use AIB's card reader to authenticate new payees.
Even if they got access to the Bank App, they can't take money out of it.
People need to be educated to keep the amount in current account as low as possible too.
That Cardreader thing is a horrible yoke.
PTSB only allow you add payees on a desktop device. Same thing, you can't empty a bank account to a new payee with just a phone app.
It's easier with Revolut, though, which will be linked to a bank account, and very easy to transfer to another Revolut account once logged in.
Drugged yeah... Nothing atall to do with the 15 pints he had...
I was as dubious as you are, until the stuff started appearing in the press about the fake taxi angle.
The outlay and investment in time for this fraud is huge to potentially get access to a Revolut account that might only have had the price of the night out in it from earlier.
Would it not be simpler to just put a blade to the victim's neck and ask for the codes?
I dunno. Access Revolut, AIB etc. apply for loan which they process within hours. Drawdown, send to another Revolut account and then it vanishes I guess. Something weird happened a relatives neighbour and I thought of this after reading the article.. lot of effort but lucrative if it works
