12!!!!!
I had a vague thought in my head they did Putin already (checked and they did in 2007 - below is one of links google threw up). Of course alot of the commentry on him from back then has not aged well in light of subsequent events.
edit: just saw a post further up referencing it I missed sorry!
I'd say that certainly the Kremlin heard about it inc. and not only the amoral sluts, but the murderous bastard's too. Wonder what the ordinary Russian doing his shopping in the Stari Arbat is thinking about it though? ( assuming that he has actually heard about it? )I'd imagine that it's causing ripples in society. Any commentary from the two muppeteers surface yet? ( Solovyov and Margarita)
Yes pcardin, I know about Orthodox Christmas, 7th January. I lived in Russia for several years. That and also in the Balkans where the Christmas greetings came from.. Hristo Se Rodi. " He is risen", and Vaistinu Se Rodi, " It is true, indeed He is risen"
But you are right, it was a missed opportunity for sure. but I wonder it it was even the real Vladimir,? or one of his lookalikes? I'd say at this stage that Paranoia is not a big enough word to describe his mental condition.
Did this Ukrainian pilot really take a selfie while dangling from a parachute?
Paranoia is a national tradition in ruSSia, you know that.
I think I posted I was finished for the night. Maybe you could point me to the comment to which you're referring?
Time person of the year was always a joke. Hitler won it and Stalin twice for Gods sake. A few other devils that won it are Chiang Kai-shek, Richard Nixon x2, Henry Kissinger, Ruhollah Khomeini, H. W. Bush, Clinton x2, George W. Bush x2, Trump.
They were probably the most influential people in those given years and that is who the editors aim to chose not the best person. I.e. you are totally missing the point of it.
Time Person of the Year isn't necessarily an accolade (although in the case of Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine, it is).
It's a recognition of something that "for better or for worse ... has done the most to influence the events of the year". Could be good, could be bad, but the idea is that it's always newsworthy. US Presidents are obviously going to feature prominently, regardless of virtue.
I mean, it's a marketing ploy by a US magazine at the end of the day, but it's one that has developed a certain cultural significance that's bigger than that.
Yes, but in typical Russian fashion, some are more paranoid than others....and Putin fits the bill.
7th
Yes you are right. It is 7th. Slip on the keyboard that I've corrected it now. Thanks for pointing it out.
I believe those are Easter greetings. Greek Orthodox is “Christos Anesti” and “Alithos anesti”. *thwap/crack*
It would be doing something like concord speeds. Pretty sure it could not stay up in the air under mach 1.
Hitting the naval base again?
I think jmr got the native phrasing right, but used the Easter translation by mistake. I've once or twice said the wrong one at the other time of year also. It's like the brain tosses a coin sometimes to decide which one comes out.
Sachs is an economist who has a lot to his credit when it comes to poverty and development issues. He has no professional qualifications when it comes to the kind of military and related issues pertaining to Ukraine.
R U sure about "Alithos?" Growing up in NYC, the greek diner owners would call me 'alithios' (?) which they explained meant 'fool.' They gladly served cheeseburgers and Pepsi, though.
Yeah he appears to be one of those people that is an expert in one particular field (economics) and has decided that makes him an expert in loads of other things as well. Bit like Kanye West.
Big fire as result of shelling in Yakovlevo district of Belgorod region
Actually no. It's always the best and bigliest person. Except for the years Obama won it. Those were fake news.
Trump, two Bushes, Vlad, Kissinger, Giuliani, and of course Bono.
Hristos Se Rodi ( Christ has risen) and Vaistiniu Se Rodi,( Indeed he has resurrected ) are Serbian Orthodox Christmas , and they are used up to and around 7 Jan. For Easter, it's Hristos Vaskrse and the reply is Vaistiniu Vaskrse . For the Greek Orthodox, I'm sure that you are right.
I used to live in Belgrade Josip, and I'm pretty sure that my version's of the Serbian Christmas and Easter salutations is correct. But Manic is right about the Greek ones I'd say. Not been in Greece (yet)😎 but optimistic for the future. Maybe next time I'm in Belgrade, I'll give a run down that way. Now thats an idea for summer 2023....😀
A bit off topic but since there's a relative lull in Ukraine at the moment I might as well digress :) Your versions are correct, but it's your English translations that are off.
'Se rodi' is the reflexive form of the verb roditi (to be born). At Easter you say 'vaskrse' which comes from vaskrsnuti meaning to resurrect, once again, the reflexive form.
Perhaps it was different where you were living, but if I said Hristos se rodi to anybody before the morning of the 7th they'd look at me as if I was wearing a Madeleine Albright mask. The same for Hristos vaskrse.
At Sivershchyna direction Russian army shelled Khrinivka and Hremyach of Chernihiv region and Novovasylivka, Ulytsya, Chernatske and Seredyna Buda of Sumy region, - General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine says in the morning report
things are heating up on the front lines
Well as they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, and that's where I picked it up from the Serbs themselves when I lived there, and I don't remember any adverse comments if it was used before the 7th Jan. Or maybe they were being polite to a foreigner? I don't know, but as the 7th Jan comes ever closer, we will find out. But I'm pretty sure that I've heard them use it themselves before the 7th too when greeting each other on facebook etc. I'll be talking to a Serb friend later on and I'll ask him, and get back to you, OK?
Hristos Se Rodi is actually 'Christ is Born' and Vaistiniu Se Rodi is 'Indeed he is born'
Your translations using risen/resurrected are actually for the other two phrases: Hristos Vaskrse and Vaistiniu Vaskrse.
I'll have to lay off the slivo for awhile....☺️
Može :)
