I don't think endorsing Hitler in the 1930's, despite his rabid anti-semitism then, would require the same degree of mental illness as it would today since all his crimes have been revealed. However, the anti-semitism was what made him appealing to your average German, that and his 'make Germany great again' political stance.
Endorsing him today, however, probably should be in the DSM.

Having a controversial opinion has nothing to do with mental illness. The inability to gage consequences of stating these opinions is a different matter and the real problem.

Its based on my personal lived experience with people who have been and are mentally unwell.
I don't think a person should need a degree in psychology to be able to come to the conclusion that a public declaration of love for Adolf Hitler shows that the person making that declaration is not mentally well
Opinions and thoughts are free. Expressing them publicly, rallying or acting on them is a different matter.
