Anyone looking in here into organic farming?

How are things going for you? It's an area l wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about, especially the beef side of things. It might not be viable for a small farmer in the west of Ireland though, would it?

You'd have to be fully self sufficient ie growing your own grain, feeding it to your own bred stock, bedding on straw. ..

Anyone make the switch from conventional or visa versa?

Good to keep all options open

Short term it makes financial sense, but long term if there's a forever/payback clause in it, it doesn't, to me at least. I'd be lumbering (pun intended) my son with that clause, or if I were selling or developing I'd have hamstrung myself. They'd get an avalanche of trees planted if they don't have that clause imo.

It applies to all stock. The main hurdle for people going organic is the lieback area

Yes.

each animal needs 1m2 per 100kg weight. 50 percent of that needs to be solid bedded as a minimum.

So a 600 kg cows needs 6m2 and 3m2 of that has to be solid and bedded.

400kg weanling needs 4m2 and 2m2 of that needs to be solid and bedded.

I had a lie back area at the back of the slats but it wasn't making up 50% of the housing. I ended up putting down plywood and then a screed of concrete on one of the pens. As it turns out it works a treat, I put a good slope on it with a lip on the end to prevent the straw coming off.

i am going putting up another shed next year if the Tams grants are still running. 60% grant for Organic farmers!!! It'll be a 4 bay shed, 2 bays slid bedding and 2 on slats for where they feed from. I haven't seen many good designs but I have a good idea of what to build, I just need to find out what are the T&C of the Tams

Jack Nolan in the department organic section was saying 600 applicants 60,000 sheep and 20,000 cattle but not sure if I misheard it.

say those numbers include existing applicants too ie myself. I made my applicaton last week. Say no prob get in if you want. Bit like Glas unless you have eniugh land better with Reaps if can get the full 7200. Organic dairy milk price below ordianry at the moment crazy. Prob be more sheep lads this time around than last. Suits too as they can manage the sheds easily.

At an open day was told cant cover/bed slats, slats have to be replaced by solid concrete panels ( floors) Presume this is to stop people using slats as normal ( say after an inspection 😁 )

I think the main reason is actually to avoid accidents. If people bed on slats they might try to muck them out with a tractor rather than manually. Solid concrete would be a lot safer to do it on.

Im in organic scheme also 20 yrs.riparian zone

and riparian strip area not eligible for organic payment due to double funding element.not sure of wbc as dont do it but i think its not eligible for anc as its classed as arable.Check out acres specifications on dept website

You can't get payment on wbc ground and organics in glas anyway. Now with acres you can get double funding on the lipp type ground, but the payments are lower and you have to score an 8 or higher to get anything.

It’s right in Co-operative areas. You get your 250 for organic and over(high score on field potentially 450) from acres.

They must have changed it so, it would make no sense at all to have a different lower rate of payment to organic farmers of that were the case.

OFS would definitely give more money than ACRES and you wouldn't need your fields scored either. No chance you'd work out better than 250 per entitlement on ACRES.
