I’ve always much preferred the use of goal difference to h2h as the separator. Head to head removes so much jeopardy and possibilities

Yeah that’s a good counter-example tbf. In general though GD never rules out an outcome entirely, whereas h2h can. If I’m 3 points ahead of you and already beat you twice this season, then what happens in the final round of matches is irrelevant. GD would keep it alive to some extent.
