Unprecedented scenes coming out of China. It seems people are really getting fed up of the regimes zero covid policy. Protesters calling for the resignation of Xi Jinping and even the end of Communist Party rule. Will the government crack down with a Tiananemen Square style response or will they adopt a more cautious approach (by their standards)?

Considering that China has one of the most oppressive surveillance apparatuses in the world to watch over its population its interesting that protests have continued to grow regardless. One to watch in the coming days and weeks IMO.

It was restricted movement here. People weren't welded into their apartments. Movements were restricted with estimated end dates in place. China has no end date for their hard lockdowns and they are clearly afraid their own vaccine is ineffective. Which again, may well prove to the naysayers that our vaccine drive was in fact the right course of action.

We had the strictest and longest lockdowns in Europe and the "science" behind them was the exact same as the science that is being used to justify what the Chinese are doing. The "science" that said those who protested against this totalitarian carry on were dangerous and irresponsible is the exact same as the science the Chinese will use to justify their crackdown on protestors.

People don't like it because they are now embarrassed by how much they panicked and acted like little CCP officials.

Nope. The disease at the time was completely different and there were no vaccines. The fact that we are no longer having restrictions makes that pretty obvious.

Again, we were communicated what was happening, when it was expected to end and moves were made to vaccinate the population.

Did anyone get barricaded into their homes here? Did the government enact brutal lockdowns out of nowhere and without warning? Were people sent off to "re-education facilities" here for disobeying the restrictions?

No. Wise up. They are not the same thing no matter how much you try to collate the two scenarios.

The whole point of lockdowns was to slow the virus spread and save lives until such a time as an effective mass vaccination program could be rolled out.

The whole point of the lockdown was a temporary restriction to flatten the curve and save Granny, If I recall.

Feel free to pull up a quote from the government at the time of the first lockdown that they were shutting everything down in the hope that someone manages to come up with a vaccine.

We had nothing like the measures as are imposed in China. Hyperbole. Source: I kept contact with expats and Chinese alike via WeChat over the last couple of years.

And the biggest difference is, we had a road out, and China is still in the swill because their vaccines are sh*te and are too proud to admit it.

An article detailing the possible implications for China even if it invaded and successfully occupied Taiwan. Since China is plugged in to the world economy way more than Russia is, it would suffer severe economic consequences for its actions. Of course the world economy itself wouldn't escape the effects either since the supply of semi conductor chips so vital to the operation of so much technology would be severely disrupted by any invasion of the island.

Wrong. The Omicron variant became more prevalent by being more infectious and because of it's less severe/undetectable symptoms.

Omicron performed better than any vaccine that the pharmaceutical companies could create.

Well, there is an opinion that these protests are not really anti-Covid as such. They are just symptoms of the growing dissatisfaction with the CCP. Things aren't that rosy with the Chinese economy lately.

Take the issue of "ghost cities" as an example. Do you know why they exist? Stupid decision to build a city where nobody would live, right? Not really. What's happening is that a lot of Chinese people have earned money, but they have no investment opportunities, except to buy property. Plus the unused, unfurnished apartment costs more in China that "used" one, and it is easier to sell an unused apartment --> as a consequence, a whole unused city is just a pension fund. It is not a stable scheme!

Or super-fast trains. The CPP built those train networks that are very nice and fast, but are deeply uneconomical and lose money in billions each year. It would be ok if they were useful, but the trains are hardly occupied.

A report from the Taipei Times claiming that at least 40 people died in the Urumqi apartment block fire in Western China. Says it took at least 3 hours before the fire brigade arrived on the scene by which time some 3 floors on the building were entirely burned out. But it only took the police 5 minutes to get there. This whole thing stinks to high heaven tbh.
