Why is it in this country we seem to be paying high tax and a never ending list of "fee's", and yet never seem to have anything of value to show for it?

Our wages are taxed, We have to pay road tax, we have to pay a toll to use the road then, the gov have an extortionate rate of tax on fuel and the list goes on and on.... every single thing in this country is taxed, if they could gauge how many breaths of air a person took per day im sure they d try tax that too. If a person wants to set up a business there are fee's and taxes and endless bullshit and hoops deliberately designed to syphon money its actually crazy when you stand back and have a look at all the bullshit fee's and taxes there are.

And yet some how we are still nearly a quarter of a trillion euro in debt.

And **** all to show for it bar an extortionate cost of living and a **** healthcare system.

On the issue of civil service size, In Ireland, it comprises 17.9% of the worforce. In NZ it's 11.5%.

Teacher's salaries in Ireland are 19.4% higher than in NZ.

Irish VAT is 23%, NZ GST is 15%

Irish GST is 33%, one of the highest rates in the world. In NZ it's at your nominal tax rate.

Irish inheritance CAT is one of the highest in the world at 33%. In NZ it's 0%, or in other words, they don't do that.

Allowing for the different tax years, Irelands tax receipts were 10.5% higher in 2021 than NZ's

So yeah, very curious as to what significant taxes you think there are in NZ that are higher that invalidate what I have said.

Just on the teacher pay part of your post. The median wage in Ireland was ~€40,500 in 2020 while the median in New Zealand for 2021 was $56,160 which works out at around €34,000. That's roughly 16% more in Ireland than NZ. So while 19.4% sounds like a lot, in relative terms to what money people are making in each country they are paid very similarly.

I did know that the standard NZ VAT rate is lower than the Irish standard VAT rate - how ever there are more exceptions to the standard rate in Ireland - basic foodstuffs are not charged VAT in Ireland at all.

Also, income taxes are higher for lower paid workers in New Zealand. It seems that you have to pay 10% at least, even on the first 14,000 NZD (8,400 euro) ?

The higher average salary in Ireland is largely because the public sector is so highly paid, further worsened by the higher proportion of them in the workforce. It's an argument pulling itself up by its laces.

There are 2.5m people in work.

So 1.6% of the workers are civil servants.

That's basically the same the world over. The PS as a whole tends to earn more than the private sector for a multitude of reasons.

a lot of people need wheels daily. Our public transport systems are not exactly up to much. For the size of the country and the population they are third world almost… And cycling isn’t for everyone. Age, disability, health and distance to workplaces has to be factored in… as do school runs on the way etc.

28.2 minutes is the average work commute for Irish people….

In Dublin it has become obvious that many folks have ditched cars and public transport for....ebikes and escooters. They just innovated their own economic solution.

They are a plague of some bike paths but I get it.

To pay 50% income tax as a single person with no dependents you need to be earning €700,000 a year. And that's if you do absolutely nothing to reduce your tax liability, which no one earning that amount would do.

NZ has only one house of parliament.

And we decided to keep the old folks home, talking shop, lecturers wanting to be politicians home that we call the Seanad.

How much does it cost per year.

They have less ministers in government as well.

Taxes here are goiing to rise considerably.

We have to somehow fund the hundreds of thousands of "refugees and asylum seekers".

We have to make up for the shortfall in tourist related taxes coming in as we have replaced tourists with refugees.

We have to fund the hole in tax revenue that will be left in the removal of petrol and diesel cars from the national stockpile.

We have to fund the green lunacy projects.

So get ready taxpayers to be told you have to tighten your belts.

The entitled and deserving need your schekles, so prepare to pony up.

again, the main reasons why taxes are going to have to rise, is ultimately the failures of the state stepping back at providing critical needs such as accommodation, and promoting market based entities to do so, who just turned our markets into speculative messes.....

That is only one area.

The state here copied our nearest neighbour where old Thatcher did not see the state as a provider of basic accommodation.

Of course the state did have a duty to provide accommodation, but using contracted private entities to do so was ultimately a way of transferring wealth to some.

tis indeed only one such example, but this type of thinking has now entered most sectors, including the health system, again, this has largely become a global problem, and i suspect we dont know what to truly do about it

i still think private entities are required in helping provide these critical needs, but they basically need to be put on a strong leash, thats easier said than done though

I'd love to ask these people how they plan to fund these notions of sustainable heating in homes for the masses ? We can't even house the people we have yet we want to force the poorest of us into retrofitting houses that they simply won't be able to afford to do it's flat out a moronic notion put forward by absolute brain deads imo.

Then the diesel vs electric... Is another hilarious one, the jury is well out on whether or not electric is better for the planet when all things are factored in I believe it's worse than diesel and petrol.

Cleaner air and less pollution are good things. You'll struggle to find many who'll argue otherwise

Funding is done through the carbon tax. There are up to 100% grants available for the less well off.

The jury is only out if you disregard basic scientific data and instead focus on what you "believe". You can believe that gravity doesn't exist if you want but your belief doesn't beat the data

The electric grid covers the country.

But personally I support a move away from the private car towards walking, cycling and public transport. Replacing all ICE cars with EV's is just stupid, we should be reducing car usage.
