I could be wrong but Christmas cattle kill coming near the end. Joe and Mary have much higher bills than a year ago. It's going to be white meat and mince for a while in January.
Ya Christmas kill will stop from around the end of next week. Processors will be under no pressure for cattle until Christmas week then unless supplies drop by 10k/ week. This week and next demand will be strong between Christmas and the WC.
I think after Christmas demand will be ok.ainly because there is no cheap pork or chicken because of ration prices. SuperValu do these 3/10 euro packs. In the chicken one there is only two handy chicken breasts.
Polish beef prices are running 50cent higher than Ireland. We are getting rightly screwed. A 50cent rise to the farmer is not going to make much difference to the overall price of Mary’s trolley of shopping.

Offered 4.70 base steers for kill on Monday. They are anxious for cattle.
Looking at the IFJ, they are predicting a good rise over the next weeks- but then again the IFJ never bought any cattle off me…

I wonder does a steady price rise lead to lower numbers going to the factory. The same when the price drops lads often panic and sell sooner. I find it hard to sell when there is a chance of 10cent extra next week and maybe another 10 the week after.
It’s different if cattle are approaching an age limit but otherwise I find it hard to let go. Usually wait until there is an injury and then panic.
Very few could justify a steak in a restaurant let alone a fancy one.

Whats a 520 AA heifer 21mts worth in the factory these days,don't normally go to a factory but was disappointed in mart so might chance her.
Presume R grade suckler bred? Would kill 265ish kg.
265 x (base price + Angus bonus + QA)
Around €1390
7 Heifers sold at the mart there, substancially better prices than any factory would offer.

No she's dairy bred,wouldn't make r grade I'd say and not Quality assured
That is why the mart prices are bad as well. Finishers no longer want non QA stock as they have to keep them for 70+ days to qualify. Processors often get stuck for stock and will pay finishers bonuses for having stock available at such times
Non QA heifer like that might o ly get 4.4 of a base with no AA or QA bonus. If she was O= she would be 18 cent below that or 4.22/kg so 1118 euro.
Even if producing stores now you need to be QA.
Why no AA bonus?
Was looking at a few mart's online yesterday, 520 kg and 490 kg AA heifer's making 1500 and 1450, they were well fleshed, and you could hear the auctioneer after the sale talking to the seller about the difference meal feeding makes, it was either Endenderry or Ballinakill

€2.93/kg averaged out across the 7, one heifer got exceptional price which pulled it up but the other 6 were decent chx heifers up 510-620kg worst price was light one at 1500, and the other 5 were averaging 1720 ish well fleshed and all QA.
QA rules everything at present. It not that hard but it is critical now. The reason bigger finishers are often contracted and they are contracted to supply QA cattle.

It’s probably exactly what you would have got in a factory. If they’re R+ or U- they’d kill out about 58% of mart weight, sometimes more depending on the length of time they were waiting in the mart.
€2.93 divided by 0.58 would mean you’d need a factory price of €5.05 to get the same price at 58% kill out.
Current base price for heifers is €4.75 plus €0.20 QA then either €0.06 for R+ or €0.12 for U- extra would have you at €5.01or €5.07 in the factory.
5 were over age, we took the chance and hoped they'd get tight for meat. I don't think these 6 would have had killouts as good as that, 2/3 out of the 6 were u grade, rest Rs.
The 1 exceptional heifer that made 2400 at 645kg bought for breeding obviously (no stars) but no way in hell Larry would have paid that.
If they were overage you definitely made the right decision. Whatever finisher bought them probably has a gentleman’s agreement with the factory and will get well paid for them anyway!
You couldn’t have timed it any better either. The procurement manager in one of the midlands plants was ringing farmers looking for cattle last week. Even ringing smaller finishers that would be only finishing 4 or 5 a month.
Well in fairness it was all the aul lad, the price was shite there a good few months back when they were comming close to age and he decided heed chance them on and hope they get tight. Sometimes it works, by the looks of them it will hopefully get tighter.
I seen that before with lambs these lads ringing promising sun moon and stars, lot of people ended up with poor killouts to make up for the bells and whistles added on.
The grading does seem to be harsher when you send stock after they ringing looking for them alright.
