House is about 900 sqft. I think JP McManus's house is a bit with10k sqft. Average three bed semi being build now is probably sub 1k sqft.
Massive house there would be only a few clients per year for houses like this
It looks a half acre site. I do not see any references to the area of the site on the add. It refers to the house extending to 3k SQ ft I think
It would be best to raze it all and start again, which is kind of a shame as I really like the look and the symmetry of the outside of that house from the front.
From the back it's a disaster of higgledy piggledy add-ons. But jaysus the inside. It all looks so wet.
Out of curiosity, how long would a building have to be abandoned to end up in this kind of state?
Try to salvage the fireplace at least.
In terms of living in a hotel Madonna lives in a hotel in Paris.
At a certain age it's like retirement sheltered accommodation, lift/wheelchair access, security, meals on wheels with a menu, central location easy to get taxi anywhere and walking distance to fine dining outside hotel. Maybe live in staff, nurse, home help. You may also be near other like minded ultra rich. If you have to ask how much annual charge is, you cannot afford it.
If hotel goes bust it's a big issue as no one will buy your place. In many places in Ireland management company is bust or does not have money for basic services. One of the first thing a solicitor will do is find out the financial status of the management company if you think of buying any apartment. Often the annual charge us not high enough to cover big expenses such as a new roof or upgrading fire proofing.
It looks like Celtic Tiger, 10-15 years. The main house looks period from the chimney bricks and the thickness of the floor jousts, which connect into a modern RSJ. Someone threw money into it and then walked away. The rear extensions look very out of place from the drone shot, but might have been OK inside. Has the makings of a B&B.
Its the original, period part I like. Does it say 1926 over the front door? Would that be the year it was built?
For the Cavan house, I would knock down all those extensions and renovate the main house. Would cost a fortune though!
I checked it up on Land Direct and it appears that it is .27 of an acre.
@zg3409
Even before bidding on a place the first thing I did was grab a copy of the MC's accounts. Some of the best few Euros I've ever spent..
The plot between the hedges is on two folio's. The big question are you buying o e or the two folio's.
The first folio has the house but ends at the end wall of the house on the RHS and goes back towards the end of the site with an angle in mid way.
The second folio has no area attached but is not quite as large as the house folio. I would say about 1/3 acre between the two.
1/3 of an acre, sure that's even less than a quarter!*
*See spoiler.
Note: I do not believe this, but an American who doesn't understand fractions might. https://bettermarketing.pub/the-a-w-third-pounder-failed-because-people-didnt-understand-fractions-a86b966a973a
It's unregistered so no size on land-registry.
It's over 1/2 acre
Fancy owning the house from The Goonies?
Yes, agreed its a half acre if the entire area as shown in the ad is included. I glanced at it briefly and didn't see that there was more to the site than the registered part.
The yards been cleaned up!
Were the obsessed with Dallas or something!(I don't think I like anything)
Was reading years ago that the owners at the time had to block access from approaching the house. They had no problem seeing multiple people a day doing the truffle shuffle in front of it, but people were also going right into the property, littering everywhere, and in some cases urinating nearby.
That's one depressing house. I've never seen decor like it.
It was probably ultra stylish in the 1970s
A brilliant find for the thread @freshpopcorn 😁.
I got stuck at this point ... it's er...different 😁. Lots more gems but that had me 😳😲😁
Has anyone noticed most of the photos have been removed on the Portrane House!
But seriously.....who'd live in a house like this?
Love that Waterford house. Not to live in, of course, just to look at
You know a house is retro gold when they have a hot tub in a carpeted bathroom 😂
It looks like a 1970s' guesthouse that has been well maintained but not updated in terms of style. A nice property but I don't think I'd want to live there without making major changes such as getting rid of most of the carpets and replacing them with tiles and wooden floors.
I do not like the interior decor. However the location and a 0.4 acre site in any city or large town adds a premium to any property. Ber is not too bad considering all the open fires. Its 3K sq ft . its an imposing site. House has aged badly mostly due to the interior decor. is the site worth 200k+. whoever buys it will give it a serious make over and probable spend 250K+ on it.
Painting a lot of the wooden ceilings and panels would change the look of the house. That fireplace .......actually open it up slaightly for a pellet or log burning stove and lime wash it brillant white. get rid of the carpets change to tiles and/or timber floors, get rid of that green bathroom suite especially but even the other bathroom layouts are dated.
Probably a tad over priced but will make near 700K I expect
Wow, although the Kilkenny house is so dated, I kind of like it. It's so well maintained and like a museum for the period.
I've never been there, but I feel like I've stayed there. It's got a certain era look and feel to it, but is a fine example all the same. Could be nice renovated, but the shape is working against ya.
The kind of house you'd either preserve exactly as it is. Or raze it to the ground.
(There's a picture of a bathroom with what looks like quite a distance, relatively speaking, between the toilet and the bidet. Not sure I'd want to trek that far with my bum hanging out just to splash a bit of water on the old chocolate starfish.)
I have to agree there is something impressive about it, the commitment to a certain era or else they have kept it up very well (probably the latter). It's very dark, if they replaced the dark floors and carpets throughout that alone would give it a hugely different look. Not for me but impressive all the same.
