The mere fact that Ukraine is attacking them from there, would give them severe headaches, even if the attacks were only intermittent. Keep them on their toes not knowing when the next attack would come.

Putin might feel like pulling the nuclear trigger if he felt all was lost for him, but I doubt very much that even his most ardent followers would have the same death wish, for all the nuclear sabre rattling they are doing. For sure his army chiefs are under no illusions as to what NATO could do in a matter of hours to his army and military installations.

Considering the fella was recruited from a penal prison by Wagner I'd say he was just an all 'round bad egg that both sides were happy to have off the stage.

It seems that for some Russians evil is like a day job. I suspect there are very hard times coming to Russia when it collapses. Hard times for China too because they depend economically on the west and if things go pear-shaped in the west China will collapse.

It looks like history is starting up again.

First step would be getting ATACMS.

I wonder when the first Iranian missile is fired at Ukraine, will the US finally supply them with ATACMS.

Doesn't exactly fill any deserters with confidence that if they cross over they won't be sent back to Russia to face the music. Either way it's a shitshow. Wagner operating in Kiev or Kiev going back on their word to look after deserters, especially one who offered to actually fight against the Russians.

    Anything seems possible now.

Where are the creeps who were secretly enjoying Russian gains ?

A military coup in Russia would instantly bypass the Kremlin.

Not much chance of Nuclear Commands from the ferocious ferret being obeyed either, I would say.

Yes. Wagner are notorious for murdering soldiers who they accuse of being deserters. This is what they did to a Syrian army soldier in 2017:

The murder movie shot by Wagner is stomach-turning. A carousel of four Russian-speaking men took turns beating Bouta with a sledgehammer. Then they cut off his hands and head with a shovel before stringing up his corpse by the feet and setting it alight. “Of course I couldn’t finish the video,” Alabdullah says, adding that there’s a longer version of it his relatives have seen. “They told me about the rest: that his head was cut off and they played soccer with it, kicking it at the wall with their feet.”

    source

The Ukrainians handed this guy over to the Russians, knowing that he would most likely meet a grisly fate. That's not a good look and it's not smart. Word of what happened will spread amongst those still on the front-lines who were thinking of surrendering.

How do you know all the facts?

Maybe this guy had carried out horrific acts on the Ukrainians before he was caught and cried crocodile tears.

We don’t know the truth and probably never will. So let’s stop with accusations against Ukraine which by the way is very coincidental after the liberation of Kherson.

I did think the thread had gone quiet from the usual Ukraine bad Russia good carry on.

    Oh please, grow up.

No one knows all the facts and likely never will. It still looks bad, which is what actually matters. It is honest and open commentary on an unfortunate situation. There is no "usual Ukraine bad Russia good carry on" in this thread, there is a minority of people pushing that view and BS is most certainly not one of them.

Ukraine will make mistakes, this certainly appears to be one at first look. Calling everyone who says anything remotely critical a stooge for Russia is tiresome nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,567 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

But you just admitted we don’t know the facts of this story.

    That’s that so.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 34,080 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

None of us will ever know all the facts of anything that is going on in Ukraine. So we may as well shut the thread.

Nor will the soldiers on the ground who were considering surrendering amid the belief that Ukraine will never send them back to Russia to face this kind of end.

No matter what the facts are, it is a bad look for Ukraine and likely somewhat damaging. Pointing that out is not "Ukraine bad Russia good".

It was claimed he was swapped in a prisoner exchange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭20silkcut

The discussion about the executed prisoner here is exactly the outcome that Russia would want from such an incident. Confusion and uncertainty no one sure what it means and whether it reflects bad on Ukraine or not. Exactly the type of uncertainty that Russia like to sow.

China is building and releasing new military vehicles from aircraft and ground vehicles, watercraft at an expadential rate , people laughed including expeets when they said they were going to build 10 Arlieigh Burke type destroyers in 10 years, they are now heading to 50 along with 10-20 aircraft carriers ,

But all are untested in real combat, and to move such a big force anywhere you need the transport aircraft and ships, and then you need to protect all of the above from interception and fuelled and supported again not easy in modern conflicts ,

Put 10,000 tanks in a single large area and you can guarantee that in 24 hours you will have a fraction of that left in a war zone,

That amount of armor needs a hell of a lot of crew ,fuel ,ammo, supplies, maintaining they would have such a large footprint anywhere they go they would not be able to effectively protect themselves along with a serious amount of infantry, losses would be staggering compared to what we have seen recently

Regardless of what he did there's the propaganda element which they know all too well. He was put up there as a poster boy defector. Even if he killed a Ukrainian after that then deal with him internally. Handing him back to Wagner to make their own propaganda piece is I'll advised. If he was abducted the look is even worse. I've backed Ukraine on everything since day one of the war but this is an own goal any way you spin it.

Still heavily indoctrinated. They can't bring themselves to even begin to criticise the Russian regime, Putin or the war. Just some vague assertion that local military commanders might be to blame for their relatives' plight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭20silkcut

ah here I’m not making out anyones a Putin bot. Just highlighting the typical Russian tactics of the whole incident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

South Korea has sold America 100,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells to be transported to Ukraine over the next while,

That's a serious amount of artillery to be deployed against russia

Not heavily indoctrinated, heavily controlled in a police state. They are not trying for regime change, they are just hoping for the best for their male relatives. What they have done here is braver than most of us have ever done in our lives. For that reason I don’t think the criticism is warranted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,043 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Nobody is saying they should call from regime change or Putin's resignation. But their appeal is pretty tame - they merely ask for their relatives to be withdrawn from the frontline. I'm not so sure either that they are against Putin or the war - support for those tends to be much stronger in rural areas.

Fair enough, but there is a good open question about how he ended up back in Russian territory, and none of the answers look good for Ukraine. This is not out of the norm for Wagner as they are psychopaths, but it raises questions about why Ukraine sent him back there then. It may benefit Russia, but its a mistake seemingly of Ukraine's own making.

There is not much point in not discussing that because it would please Russia. While our discussion here is ultimately irrelevant, its not a good principle to follow in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,567 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

Exactly yet some here seem determined to go with one version without knowing all the facts.

If the quality of the build of those ships is anything like their skyscrapers, I'd take my chances in the water

Lad few weeks ago, ukraine army slaughtered russian soldiers fleeing a town it had encircled (as was their right)....they are well into the mire with Russia now,and numbed to killing, and willing to do the necessary

So the notion they would hand a prisoner over to be executed deosnt seem any big issue nor suprise tbh,
