That's completely short-sighted. His behaviour could potentially impact referees currently in the game, or considering going into it. Without refs, we have no game. He needs to stop doing it, and the IRB need to impose whatever penalties are required for this to happen.

I don’t think it’s right to classify it as genius man management. It becomes toxic as suddenly you have fans on both sides who rather than discuss a great game, pore over footage to find any little indiscretions that the referee didn’t pick up on from the other team. It’s not healthy for the game or the referees.

Rassie has his fans convinced that there is now a global conspiracy against the team anyway.

At the cost of horrendous abuse of officials...there's a huge difference between the kind of deflection that Gatland used to get up to, or to an extent some of Eddie Jones' nonsense, and what Rassie is doing.

He obviously doesn't give a sh*t about the level of abuse he's encouraging of professional peers, as described by Nick Berry's statements. He's just not a good person, that's the long and short of it.

So, not a double movement then. Great awareness by the French player and by Barnes to spot it.

I never condoned what he's doing. In fact I strongly disagree with it and I hope WR throws the book at him.

All I'm saying is, Rassie isn't some idiot just going onto twitter for a rant and being a sore loser (as many people are saying). He's won a world cup ffs. He's smart and he knows exactly what he's doing. He knows it distracts from the many f*ck ups from his players. And you can't deny that it works.

Maybe he should focus more on coaching his players rather than playing mind games as their record hasn’t been very impressive over the past few years despite having lots of genuine world class players.

Seems to be a bit of disharmony among their fan base over the lack of good rugby they play too. Not sure if the goodwill will extend if he doesn’t get past a quarter against France or NZ next year.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,611 ✭✭✭fitz

Oh, for sure, I know it's deliberate and intentional...I think that makes it worse, tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭kuang1

Well it workED. Up to recently.

He's now at risk of sabotaging SAs chances of retaining their WC title by sticking to his rote approach to the game and to the rote responses to losses.

If he continues with these tactics, SA will not win the WC in France imo.

As has been said, all evidence points towards him not being that nice a guy, and a bloody sore loser.

Hard to find any sympathy tbh.

Personally hope he reaps what he sows.

it doesn’t mean he is infallible. He can still miscalculate and get carried away. Winning a World Cup doesn’t endow a coach with those abilities in perpetuity…..look at Clive Woodward. Personally I think he is doing real damage to himself and the team

It definitely wasn't a double movement for the try. My issue is how they got there, it's called a terrible referee giving a yellow card without any team warning and not being consistent by letting France away with three penalties at the other end without a card.

    Let's go Scotland!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,245 ✭✭✭Enzokk

There were 2 or 3 possible penalties in that movement. Etzebeth was first with coming in from the side and then Fourie tackled the player with the ball from an offside position while they were going to the line with momentum. I don't know what you want here. If anything it is lucky as it could have been a penalty try and 7 points instead of the 5 thy actually got from the subsequent try they scored.

You don't get a free go at avoiding a yellow just because it is your first infringement. It was a professional foul to stop France close to the line. There was nothing wrong with that yellow.

I fully agree with your last paragraph but for everything except a high shot or preventing a pass with one hand the normal thing in every game nowadays is a team warning before a yellow card.

We also want consistency. France gave away three penalties at their own end not long before they got down to South Africa's end of the field. There was no warning there either and no yellow.

So the game was refereed differently for both teams. That's unacceptable and Barnes has done this numerous times in his career.

I've seen it many times over the last 18 months,

I also remember a few years back when Wales played France and it went on for 100 minutes or slightly more which is just wrong. He gave away at least two ridiculous penalties against Wales. He shouted 'not ten' and blew for a penalty at a five metre scrum, there was another penalty against them for somebody not releasing but he did release.

He's a terrible referee in my opinion. I cringe when I see that he's reffing a match because it's hard to put up with his nonsense. It's sad to see him breaking Nigel Owens' record for most matches. Owens was a fantastic referee his whole career.

What melts my brain is that he's putting these clips together and sending out very carefully worded tweets an hour after the match.

Like, shouldn't he have other things to focus on in the immediate aftermath of another defeat? Apparently not, apparently spin and deflection are more pressing.

Rassie is the Donald Trump of rugby at this point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,790 ✭✭✭ersatz

Yeah, he has a process for communicating with refs for post game analysis and clarification, going on twitter and jumping into the news cycle dissing the ref is a new low in rugby, and its something I'd hate to see normalized. Lots of coaches deflect attention from players with all sorts of mind games, EJ & Gats are past masters and ROJ has some talent at it, but that's very different from distracting from poor results by trashing refs.

All that said, something is going to have to be done about the breakdown, it's actually getting more dangerous.

Rassie is filling his team with bitterness and a mentality that they have to beat everyone, it will pay dividends for them yet.

If Ireland had been at the wrong end of those calls yesterday we would be giving out yards about it all.

Maybe, but the point is that the coach of the national team should probably be carrying himself slightly differently than random internet commenters

As I said, it's a classic Trump tactic, create enough noise and swirl and people get confused about what's really important, and they get angry, and that won't end well.

And like Trump, no matter how much of a snake he turns out to be, you'll have people defending him to the hilt because he's THEIR snake.

France proving they’ll be a huge threat at the 6 nations and World Cup next year by getting over the line last night. They’re not softies, they’re not like South Africa who go away.

You can't keep yourself off the ground with your forearms either - players get called for that when jackling.

When theres a head coach and a director of rugby its hard to tell who should have match day duties. I had thought that Nienabar had all the match day duties. That is why no one protested when Rassie spoke about coaching South Africa A against Munster. Then he didn't do that and we don't know if he ever actually intended on doing it.

It might have 3 years ago, right now it's stale and smacks of childishness

Rassie is a stain on the game

He is also beginning to seriously run the risk of being banned for the world cup at this rate.

Rugby pass is owned by World Rugby

Let's here the noise from the purists now or do we get the same silence we got when Leo had a cut off Frank Muphy after a comprehensive win over Munster
