That is exactly what I have been doing except I would feed them a little more, 3-4kg to try and get them done faster.
This year I would like to get rid faster so need to bring some to the mart. Wondering what people normally do with the mart, bring them in straight from the parlour or dry them completely, sealing them and all before bringing them in? Do you get rewarded in the mart for drying completely over a couple of weeks and sealing them etc?
Any quotes for next week?

Grass cattle must be all killed now at this stage.
Can't see too many guys out with bags of nuts to heavy cattle outside. Quicksand and lack of daylight, springs to mind. Anyone that was planning on finishing off grass, was making sure they did not see the shed again. There is a pinch in numbers coming.
Very few cattle left on grass at present. Unless they have silage and are getting 5-8kgs of nuts they would do better inside.
Having said that it seems there is substantial numbers in sheds ready to go as well
Was just looking at beef prices on Agriland. Bulls are up 30c/kg. Now usually bulls mean over 24 month. The figures seem to be skewed by C&J meets who paid 4.8/ kg for a consignment of bulls. They were probably assigned the wrong group, but the price was 4.8/ kg for R= which is a good price in the present market.However Kildare and Liffy meats paid similar money for R-bulls
If a feeder puts in cattle in the autumn, it's usually timed for the Christmas trade which will start shortly.
As you say more people put in cattle early to avoid a long feeding period and are ready now to sell by the end of the month for Christmas too.
There's also summer grazers waiting until cattle are seven months on the farm to qualify for disadvantage area payment, I know of a good few extensive farmers (my age) in that position

Id imagine so, that and the fact the food you are providing in shed might be more nutritious...my dad used to say around august september the power is gone out of the grass....less sugars Id imagine
of course if they are well fed and have shelter they will do very well outside too........but the more energy they have to devote to maintaining body temp the less goes to weight gain
they can go back in a shed too if this is the case, ie:poor feed, not a dry bed, over crowding, reduced food quality...or being bullied etc
They are burning up too much energy outside now (especially when it gets cold). On top of this there is very little feeding in the grass when you get into November.
How long feeding should 12 500 kg bullocks get from a bale of silage plus a 25 kg bag of cattle ration?
2 days I'd say and maybe a little longer with it or so with a well packed good quality bale.
Most traditional and Continents breed bullocks will eat 2% of there bodyweight. Those 500kg bullocks will eat 10kgs DM per day. I presume the ration is daily so that will provide about 1.8kgs DM per head per day.
If the be is around 30dm.it shod provide them.enough for two days. If it's above 50%DM it should do three days

Any quotes for bulls? I see the journal is giving €4.80 for r grades. Didn't think they were up at that with bullocks at €4.50.
Just got the kill-sheet in the post today.
One of the six was 2+ (and O-) but the other five were all 3= and either O= or O-. Average weight was 236kg. It's too light and I won't be sending them at that weight again. But still happy enough to have a few gone.
I'll pick out a few for feeding at grass next Sept and try to get them gone before housing. The rain this year has forced my hand a little bit.
If you call up the factory in the afternoon after a morning kill they will email out the kill sheet / priced returns. No need to wait for the returns in the post.
You might have been disappointed with the weights but if you brought them to the mart you would have been gutted. I think you got the lesser of the two evils. Plain cattle are a bad trade in marts atm (good value for buyers though). What age were they?
17-20 months. The two aged 17 months were the lightest. I should have kept them back.
Based on a few sums, they didn't gain 1kg/day from Sept on either (when they were weighed). That's another lesson for me - I was half assuming, or more like hoping, they'd continue to gain the 1kg/day they had been doing since they were weighed back in March.
If you had to put meal into them from 1st sept especially the 20month ones they'd have killed close to 300 kgs dead weight. The other two would have taken longer and with the rain we got they would need to have been put in the shed and killed around Christmas. Don't worry see this as a lesson young cattle need meal to finish/weigh.

Firstly, must commend your honestly here & in your videos. Big help to people learning all about finishing beef cattle etc. Im still learning myself & i think we all will be for as long as we are at this. The only way you learn is by trying. As KK man said above, if you had been feeding them earlier it could possibly have helped your grade along some bit along with the weight. The only thing is them HE/AA heifers could go fat very quick.

beef price has strengthened a bit today which is good news! I have 5-6 to factory before Xmas and it’s sickening feeding them into a dropping price. Will be the last cattle fattened on farm for the next 5 organic years
