I came across some road infrastructure plans for Dublin which never happened, THANKFULLY. I thought it would be interesting to post here and see what other projects people can think of.
Mod: Can we leave Galway Bypass or Galway RR or whatever they call it now to its own thread in the Roads section.
Midlands Airport.
It was built - in Knock.
A new Dublin Port out past Balbriggan.
Ballcocks
The Midlands Airport was a solo run by an architect, as was Knock a solo run by a Monseigneur. He got his built, but this one didn't. Knock is actually mentioned in that article.
If Shannon or Cork struggle to succeed against Dublin, then no chance for this one.
Yawn
That actually was and still is a good idea. Would free up massive amounts of city centre land for housing.
I remember coming across a Celtic Tiger-era animation showing a mega city where Dublin port is now that was doing the rounds again when Dublin was in the doldrums post-crash - I think that this proposal specified Dudndalk as the new site for Dublin port(?) Could be mistaken on this last part
In a similar vein, Dublin port has proposed to infill part Dublin bay, serveral times I think, only to be met with fierce opposition from Clontarf residents.

It would, of course, render the massive amounts invested into the port tunnel a total waste of money.
This is surely still a reasonably good idea??
They could put a Luas or Metro down it, or in one tunnel.
Brussels done this with the main river in the city.
Something they are now trying to undo.
I was surprised to see that the tunnel "only" cost 752m and opened 15 years ago in 2007. We can't seem to build anything for less than 2B these days so I'm surprised by that!
However, the removal of trucks from the quays and city centre has changed the city entirely. It's possible the tunnel has already paid for itself by improving quality of life in the city, not to mention the tolls collected from car users.
DPT takes in about ~20m a year in tolls, and has running costs so it will be quite some time before it covers its construction costs from toll income; but the improved access to the port, reduced fuel burnt sitting in traffic and removing trucks from the quays were the intent regardless of whether it repaid its costs.
You don't think that the traffic from all the apartments etc, build in the docks would/could benefit from the tunnel, esp the construction traffic invloved in building them?
And sadly the quays are still packed with traffic.
There's no place for motorways in the city centre.
U2 Tower in Dublin Docklands.
A skyscraper financed by U2 which would have featured a giant egg on the top with a recording studio in it which U2 would use to record their next album.
Let's not forget Sean Dunne's 37 storey Ballsbridge Tower.
Sorry Mods, but The Galway Ring Road is relevant here and will probably still be true in 100 years time.
To be fair, we can definitely include the previous iterations. As for the latest one, I think the writing is on the wall there but let's see 🙄
I remember that being planned.
The removing of the Merrion Gates to be replaced by a bridge and diversion of the Strand Road onto Merrion Road through the Church carpark and through the old CTT office carpark. It was stopped by the locals contesting that they had the right to park in front of their houses. The locals won.
It was part of a cycleway scheme that also never happened.
It's still likely to beat any form of underground rail in Dublin in the timeline of getting constructed
hahaha careful now.
The mods closed down the GCRR thread. You're not allowed to discuss it.....
It's wasn't just a bus station, it was also the nexus of a DART network, which also never got built
The stiffy in the liffey?
Moving Mountjoy Prison to Thornton Hall and turning Mountjoy into a luxury hotel.
Mad even by 2008 standards.
They really need to revisit this one. Having a prison in the middle of the city centre is madness. Demolish and build some housing instead
