Are you getting a smart meter.
I have not approved the company to put one in yet. I don't think I will get one, as I can see driving my crazy checking on the how much energy is been used.
They are not detrimental to my solar panels. I got the letter about the smart meter around this time last year. Electricity was off for 20 mins while it was being installed. I've seen no difference in my usage since then. I'm on a regular plan, not a smart plan. I'm generating a considerable surplus which will be credited to my account in the next few weeks.
They cant tell what appliances I am running unless they are smart devices that are phoning home to a particular IP. They also cant get nearly the volume of information they used to due to the increase in encryption usage. But thats not to say ISP data collection is not a concern. If I was sending packets to the Islamic Republic on the regular I'd be trying to obscure my usage behind a foreign VPS/Tor or using someone else's connection.
Smart meters can’t tell what applicable you are running either. You’ve got a weird understanding of what they actually are.
not the meter itself but the point where they process the data. Something like a washing machine has a certain power usage profile (uses a lot of power at the start to heat water, then motor constantly switching on and off slowly, then spin cycle), they can monitor power factor as well so can tell the difference between a motor or resistive element or switch-mode power supply being switched on. With good enough meter data you can tell with a high degree of confidence what devices are switched on at any one time.
Honestly, looking at the data, it's all "best guess", I have all the water heated by gas and haven't used the immersion in years, yet it puts a lot of it under water heating. Certainly nothing that can be usefully gleaned from it for a marketer.
Yep, my point exactly.
So all I have to do to outwit big data is to anonymise my energy usage to that big brother won't be able to tell what electronic devices I'm using. For my microwave If I set it to popcorn mode, would that help? I'm also planning on randomly adjusting the brightness control of the TV, should keep them off my trail.
To be 100% sure replace all your appliances with ones they use exactly the name amount of watts per hour.
"Water heating" sounds like statesian bias to me. What are you using to analyse the data and what is the sample rate? Also if you have solar panels that will obscure the data to a certain extent
you must be gone completely la la if you think ESB, EI, Energia etc are interested in when and what appliances you use..
Those lads don't really have a whole pile of use for the data other than selling onto Google/Amazon who definitely are interested.
Yeah, this belongs in the conspiracy theory forum. Reason is gone.
They know it's a motor based appliance that started up and because it's blowing air the power consumption isn't varying as much so they'll know it's more likely to be a leaf blower than a machine that runs idle/under heavy load for alternating periods like a garden shredder or an air compressor (load steadily increases as the tank fills up). Its possible they confuse the leaf blower with another similar machine such as a big indoor fan. Attic heater is purely resistive so they know its a heating appliance of some sort. Initially they could confuse it with a kitchen appliance but if its still clicking on and off at 3AM or if it clicks on and off more during the night they can be pretty sure it's a space heater of some form.
The data isn't very granular at the moment but some systems already work on a per-minute basis but per-second or even quicker is not inconceivable using compression & caching to save bandwidth. Perhaps even using existing smart meters after a firmware update.
well now I’ve heard everything
Your post is nonsense. The big bad gubberment and whoever else can’t tell much about my electricity usage apart from I used x amount in any given time period. They don’t know if it’s a leaf blower, garden shredder, or some weird powerful sex toy that has been plugged in. Forget about the variable settings on each of the aforementioned that vary the power usage. Your head must be a scary place if everyone is out to get you.
Even this?
It isn't nonsense, just because you lack the skills and the software to analyse the power consumption of a house.
The big bad gubberment isn't necessarily out to get you, the primary value of this data is for advertising although if some lad down the road from you gets murdered on the one night you didn't come home to make your pot noodles and sit down behind your Playstation 5 until bedtime you will have a slightly more difficult time getting the guards to stop questioning you.
The shark has been jumped.
Ah here, have a read
Loads more fascinating articles on NILM if you are interested.
You could totally confuse them by plugging in your sex toy and leaf blower at the same time. It might relive your mind of the stress of living on grid.
One's ability to confuse will be diminished as the technology improves.
This thread is like that movie sharknado*. Starts out with an interesting plot, and then just goes cuckoo fast
*OK, I didn't see the movie, but I'm pretty sure it's fcuking nuts like this thread
at this stage I don’t know if you’re a bit mad or trolling
the garda are gonna use smart meters to accuse people of crimes now yea? Jesus Christ
Maybe even use the leaf blower as a sex toy. We're not here to judge. Whatever floats your boat!
😲
If we don’t hear back from the guy hiding under the bed from the big bad world, we can guess how he got on. Some work up to 300kph, and it would be a case of the cold air from it replacing his hot air. I don’t see it working out too well for him.
You're presumably unvaccinated too?
It might be best to change the leaf blower for a petrol powered one. Then they'll never know when you are blowing your leaves.
I will not be getting one.
It's being sold to us as a means to save energy. Which is great in theory.
But what will come out in the end is a way of selling us ever more complicated price plans and tariffs. Like it was in the heydays of the mobile phone contracts. Like its free every other Tuesday between half 4 and quarter past 5 but only if you call your auntie. Outside that the price doubles.
Price plans which only purpose is to conceal the fact you're going to be paying way more than before.
When these meters came out first, the only objections I was seeing online were crackpot ones regarding EMF radiation. But now I see a real reason why someone wouldn’t want one, with the higher peak rate tariff and the complicated price plans.
Yet again, it needs to be stated that there is a difference between having a smart meter and being on a smart plan. The former does not in any way imply or force the latter.
