I imagine the yanks will, theres a lot of liberating the US could do just across the Bering strait
As cnocbui guessed, I meant metaphorically :D
Just seen a report claiming that photo of Kyiv was taken in 2019 at sunset before the city lights were switched on and had nothing to do with a shortage of power. Not saying there is not an issue with power in Ukraine since the strikes by russian missiles and drones on civilian infrastructure but think it is common for convenient photos of something to be used out of context in the media and think this is likely to be just another example.
Detonating any sort of dirty bomb anywhere near the Russians would result in Ukraine being struck by nuclear weapons. Just because Ukraine may (or may not) hypothetically have the capacity to create some sort of dirty bomb, obviously doesn't mean they would ever consider it.
In terms of probability, it's not impossible that Moscow would use such a weapon or manufacture a minor nuclear accident/disaster. They have already lost a high number of men who were digging trenches in radioactive soil near Chernobyl, and have had no issues shelling the largest nuclear plant in Europe.
it was also noted by the US at the time Russia were at Chernobyl they [Russia] had removed materials from Chernobyl for reasons unknown. If Russia built a dirty bomb[s] using materials from Chernobyl then they could use this by way of blaming Ukraine.
The NYT article is pay walled, but says "one senior U.S. official said there were new, troubling developments involving Russia’s nuclear arsenal. The official asked for anonymity and declined to provide any details, given the sensitivity of the issue" according to several posts such as:-
Can anyone access the article to give some context on these "troubling developments involving Russia’s nuclear arsenal"?
Not a chance in hell of that. Do you know anything about FIFA?
Detonating any sort of dirty bomb anywhere near the Russians would result in Ukraine being struck by nuclear weapons.
No, it wouldn't. Detonation of a dirty bomb would leave a big grey area of a "whodunnit" with both sides blaming the other, and likely be a pretext for other states to intervene in the conflict, as any fallout would be very unlikely to be contained totally within Ukraine/Russia/Belarus.
Put it this way - even if Ukraine did detonate a dirty bomb, it would give no more justification for the russians to use a nuclear strike than if the ukrainians do nothing. The Russians know this too, so why bother with the theatre?
On the subject of the very first page of the thread - I love this line from the #4 post
It should be renamed from the Russian Federation to the Russian Legitimate Businessman's Federation.
The fact that these nations are even competing at this farce let's you know all about their priorities. English players taking the knee week in week out but happy enough to play in a country as disgusting as Qatar proves they are hypocrites and you think they'll take a stance on Iran? Please.
If Ukraine were behind such an attack, Moscow would instantly know that they didn't pull it off, ergo it was 100% Ukraine, and that would open the books for them to use any methods to retaliate. They don't care about the court of "public opinion" in that scenario. It wouldn't be a "whodunnit", it would go straight to the highest nuclear alert levels and most likely a response in kind.
If however Moscow pulled off some type of false flag, then it would likely be the scenario you describe, a big international "whodunnit" and the reaction would likely be very different.
I see 30 members of the left wing of the House Democrats, including all 6 members of "The Squad", issued some mealy mouthed statement yesterday asking Biden to try and seek peace with Russia.
Full list of them here:
They're now on the same page as Marjorie Taylor-Greene. The Horseshoe Theory of politics truly in action!
A busload of Moscow Micks, sadly every country has them.
To be fair, they clarified and said it should also be a weapon, one of many to use to try end the war.
Think they just went about it the wrong way.
The Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme currently allows people from various countries, including Russians and Belarusians, to enter Ireland without a visa if they are coming directly from the UK.
Has this already been reported here, the Republic does not have much clout against Russia but it's something I suppose.
Now that was totally unexpected. Obvious that many influential players in the West are getting tired of the protracted conflict as the repercussions become more severe.
They're all representing safe seats so this has nothing to do with the general election in 2 weeks either. They just couldn't help themselves. They were probably getting bombarded with messages from tankies for the past 8 months. Well now they're all getting bombarded with messages from the sane majority of their voters who are disgusted with their statement. Including the great Steve Van Zandt:
in Syria (and a few other places I know of) electrical power was distributed throughout the city according to availability to ensure that everyone got some power during the day. 2 hrs on, 4 hrs off. etc. Just tough luck if you happened to be in an elevator..or forgot to fill your water buckets..
Thats very insulting to Animals Dan...hard to find words in the English language to describe them.. even ORCS do not do them justice. Sub-Human maybe???
AOC, what a surprise 🙄 Dangerous bunch of cranks.
There is such thing as the 'court of public opinion' and it tends to be very persuasive when it gets a head of steam. Watch the space. Fully expect this story to grow legs and Ukraine will keep up the pressure.
There is no 'realistic' solution. Just saying 'ceasefire' is airy fairy fantasy. As if words can magically get the Russians out.
I understand the difference Timmy, but if Ukraine were to use such a weapon, they would lose the high moral ground they presently hold, and possibly the support they now have. But meanwhile Shoigu describing such a bomb being used to threaten Russian held areas of Ukraine (or even Russian City's ??) will scare the crap out of the Russians themselves. They are winding themselves into tighter and tighter and smaller circles. strangulation beckons.
If it cant be proven Ukraine did it (most people will assume Russia is responsible regardless) then it could work quite well for them - no better way to get international community actively involved in the conflict than to paint your opponent as nuclear terrorists.
Here ya go:
archive.ps is such a handy site.
I would give more credit to the various international intelligence agencies monitoring this war, than you obviously. It would be well known who was responsible very quickly.
But they didn't. What they asked for is far less extreme than the GQP - they want Biden to initiate negotiations with Putin. The GQP want to cut funding to Ukraine. If they win a majority in the House, expect just that.
Lads China are not going to invade Siberia at least not unless there was another collapse and break up of Russian regions. Even if they couldn't stop the invading army all they'd have to do is nuke the parts of Siberia the Chinese push into. Hardly anybody leaves here. Not many will be affected by the fallout but it would eliminate the invading Chinese army and create a radio active border to deter future invasions.
It also wouldn't have targeted China territory directly so wouldn't justify a nuclear response.
Hmm using a bomb full of horrible radioactive shít to contaminate one of your own cities (or other part of your territory)...
As well as the more orthodox destruction and ruin that future someone (Ukrainians mainly!) will have to live with and repair after this madness ends we'll deliberately create a second smaller Chernobyl type exclusion zone in our country to be cleaned up as well!
Yes I'm sure Ukraine will be adopting these big brained contrarian ideas any day now. If anyone uses stuff like "dirty" bombs, biological, chemical, nuclear weapons etc. in Ukraine it will be Putin.
Nope, the article goes no further in explaining that part. That's the only reference to it and follows up with official statements saying they don't think unconventional means are being considered by Russia at the minute.
It's shoddy reporting if you ask me as it causes alarm with no further information.
