Correct, but sole traders are eligible for capital allowances and one is eligible to be PAYE and a non-registered sole trader for net income of up to 5000 euro on top of one's PAYE earnings. The caveat I have found is that the equipment in question must be used exclusively for the trade activity (IE so a PV system that is also 'used' by the home in a personal capacity doesn't qualify. I've been down a tax legislation rabbit hole this morning haha
Sorry for the tangent folks, but I think we have something here. It seems as though, if you can demonstrate reasonably what portion of the plant/equipment was used for trade and what portion was used for private/personal use (self consumption) then you may be eligible to claim relief on the portion of use that was used in trade. This is true for sole traders' vehicle already for example. https://www.charteredaccountants.ie/taxsource/1997/en/act/pub/0039/sec0294.html
In plain English, I think it MAY be possible to claim : (% of total generation that is exported in reporting period) X (capital cost of equipment ex. vat) X 12.5% for 8 years as a loss/expense.
That methodology is already used by sole traders. You can purchase a car and write off some of the cost using that formula above.
What I would recommend to everyone if it is going to be self-reported going forward is actually report it to Revenue..
Sometimes people think since its self-reported then you don't have to and ah sure its grand... but sure as night follows day the buoys in revenue will catch up to you and you could end up paying penalties etc.
Good thinking 😁 We have one earner in the house who wouldn't pay a cent in income tax even if her income would go up by a grand or so 😂
My wife will be going on the bill. Was going to put it in the dogs name but for some reason they won't allow that
Contact Harry Redknapp for tips.
Good one
According to that solar pv Facebook page Energia have started paying deemed export.
Can anyone here confirm?
Yup I just checked our latest bill after seeing that and it's there. Have had our system in over two years but only got sorted with NC6 just over a month ago so probably missed out on some back payments unfortunately.
We just have a night saver meter.
Mmm. I thought they were back paying for anything you've exported regardless of the NC6 submission date... as your smart meter would have the total amount of units sent back to the grid. Am I wrong in my assumption?
Yes you are wrong
We don't have a smart meter so it's an estimate based of the size of the inverter (i think)
So, even if you have a smart meter and you are already sending to the grid and been accounted for in the meter, you say you'd miss whatever you send to the grid until the installer submits the NC6 ?
Yes, only from date of NC6 submission onwards.
Let's say you DIY your own PV install with micro inverters etc, never send in an NC6 at all. You'd be exporting to the grid but would never be paid.
Wow... well I didn't DIY
With a bit of luck they sent it before this has started sending up to the grid. Only got setup and started a couple weeks ago.
Thanks for clarifying!
Don't take it for granted that they did, email esbnetworks@esb.ie with your MPRN and see if you are on the system. We weren't on the system at all after 2 years, either the installer just took pics of the forms for seai to fulfil the grant requirement and never posted them or ESB never did anything with them when they got them.
Thinking the logic through, NC6 submission date has to drive when you're eligible for FIT. Would be wide open to abuse otherwise. Otherwise people in future years could claim to have solar installed from the date that FIT started. There needs to be a clear process for when you're considered entitled to claim FIT. And the NC6 records the size of the system - it stops everyone claiming they have a 6kW invertor to get the highest deemed export (until they get a smart meter).
No system will stop people lying, but it will work for the majority.
Not 100% sure if that is the case. Sure for deemed export on a day/might meter, but when you actually are exporting through a smart meter? Pretty much all new houses in estates built the last 5 years have a token PV array now. Are all those houses registered with an NC6 form?
Yes, look at the CRU paper on the FIT payment. It only begins from NC6 date. No NC6/7 etc then no FIT
Yep, thanks, I emailed them last weekend and waiting for a response... wondering why the hell they don't have an easy website or smtg to check ourselves.
A neighbor told me he was told Bord Gais were paying FIT from Jan 1st 2023.
Better late than never.
Anyone know when Electric Ireland are paying?
they are meant to have a NC6 form sent in to the esb.. Having one sent in.. well thats another story.
Do installers not need to have the nc6 form sent in as part of the SEAI grant process?
Strictly speaking you aren't even supposed to be connected to the grid if you have solar and didn't submit an NC6
I doubt the CRU or ESBN will be chasing you, they seem to be having enough trouble figuring out what their jobs are anyway
But, it's something to keep in mind in case they ever come asking why a house has measured export and no NC6
No, they only need to send seai a picture of the form filled out.
Did anyone receive a payment on their SSE Airtricity account this month?
There was no mention of it on our October bill and our NC6 was processed last February. I checked with the ESB to make sure.
I can't get through to Airtricity on the phone and was fobbed off on Twitter. They don't answer emails and won't call back when I use the call back feature, waiting on the phone.
I have exported 1500KWh this year and can't change provider until this is sorted out.
Thanks for any help.
The email I got from BG said I would get my ist payment 1 year after start date and a credit every year after.
But they also said that I would have to remain a BG customer to receive the payments.
Are they allowed to do that?
If you leave BG your new provider will start paying you instead. If you leave in July for example they should still pay you up to that point and then the new provider starts paying for your export. BG statement seems to just confuse people. Most of the other providers have been clearer on this even those that have not started paying. eg was with EI - they have confirmed I'll still be paid up to the date i left them.
Can you share the contents of that email? It's one thing to have a dope on the phone say something incorrect, but to get it in writing... if its official policy... that seems to be something the regulator should be looking into.
