Yes. But there are people out there who for various reasons may perceive a situation incorrectly, they may think someone wants them to make a big move, or they may have been falsely told that someone said they were into them. They may be high, or mentally a bit touched, going through a difficult time, low iq, or the victim of trolls, or trying to get back with someone. Any number of situations. Perhaps even sending content to an unintended recipient could come into it.

(This applies across all sexualities and in both directions btw).

the sensible thing to do would be to gradually escalate the rejection of such messages.

From 'no' to 'go away' to 'your blocked' to 'complaint and a police warning' to 'court'.

Not from 'no' and 'go away', and then straight to 'court'.

A warning by police removes all misunderstanding and all extenuating circumstances.

Why anyone would object to that step, which 100% clarifies everything instantly, I don't know.

It's surprisingly easy to not send unsolicited dick pics.

People send nudes? Sure, if it's consensual then have at it but no-one has to receive unwarranted vulgar messages and porn. Like, that's a pretty low bar to not get a suspended sentence, it's really not that hard to not harass someone.

Women have concerns about their safety when out and about and this attempting to justify creepy behaviour does nothing to reduce those fears.

Nothing wrong with the suspended sentence. These cases, I would argue, are much softer rather than the case you mentioned at the start being heavy handed.

Don't harass people. Sending unsolicited messages of a sexual nature to someone who doesn't know you is harassment and it breaks the basics of social contacts.

You will have to get on to TD's to ask them to get this offence included in those which are eligible for a Garda caution. No point in harping on about it in this particular case, the option was not available.

This method will basically just dredge up every 'creep' and among them will be some wastes of the courts time - unfortunate lads who need a social worker more than a solicitor. A knock on the door would sort the dangerous ones out from the clowns and eejits. Probably save taxpayers some money.

The main reason that this man is not behind bars is because of lack of prison space. The legislation was designed to include prison sentences of up to two years for this sort of offending.

both a caution or a suspended sentence allow the individual to remain out of prison, so no difference in capability of committing such a crime.

I was wrong about the two years, he could have got seven. Definitely not a case for a caution.

I've read a few reports but they're basically all the same. We only know for certain there were 13 messages which included 3 porn clips downloaded from t'internet. And he kept sending them because he wasn't blocked. That's it. The fact he pleaded guilty means most likely he accepted the evidence and nothing was read out in court, straight conviction. So no real details I reckon.

I can see why they set it to 7 years, a deterrence. But I do agree with the OP insofar as it seems quite high in comparison to other crimes. Then again, we shouldn't be comparing crimes so... I dunno, lack of detail means we don't know exactly what was sent, he admitted guilt immediately and cooperated, apologised and did whatever else was required of him. Far from a dangerous person imo. At the end of the day though, who knows! I also think she used quite a lot of good buzz words, whatever that's worth.

Tis a whole lot of nothing in the end really. She wants to move on. He has been convicted and has a 12 month sentence hanging over him. I'd say there's people on here more upset than she is.

Now, I wonder how many thugs got away with assault or burglary this week. I think the whole point of the OP was to compare that it seemed a bit much in comparison to other sentences. But that's all down to person preference on how you rank crimes.
