Bono is at that age - mortality beckoning etc. Missed first part, were U2's business affairs discussed and their exile status as regards taxation?
Where is the surprise, he has turned up on everything but the moving crib.
It’s a really interesting interview and a completely different side to Bono. Much more Paul the human than Bono the rockstar. O’Connor is great at these sort of interviews.
Bono surprise guest on show.
Yeee dis....and yeee dat....and josephine duffy on top.
Bye bye RTE.
TG4 should replace the entire operation
Had to laugh tho on Saturday, at least two of the guests when asked if they were heading out for a bit of Jazz "Ah no now I won't be seeing any this year".....
Ballsy apologised on Sunday's show for Saturday's being too Cark-centric, then introduced an all-Cark panel to review the papers.
Guurls, guurls more guurls. Up Cark 🇧🇭
It's outside elements stirring up dissent against the influx of refugees says the GP lady, sure I suppose you'd come to that conclusion if the only ones you mixed with were of a similar viewpoint and the only articles you read were of the welcome-all-we'll manage somehow kind, a complete disconnect
Boring, bland, safe.
That appears to be the aim of the show these days.
It’s so distracting hearing guests constantly say “amm… and so… amm… ammm”- I think this woman’s name is Lorna something? She might be nervous, but it’s so annoying to listen to.
Today's show was brought to you by The People's Republic of Cark and how great Cark is. Ballsy must have thought he was on Cark Local Radio such was the amount of times he referred to "Dublin people" and "Dublin people going home on Monday" when discussing the Cork Jazz/Bank Holiday Weekend. Playing to the gallery so to speak.
You should check Gough’s ‘Jude’ books, B. Well worth a read. More enjoyable than anything Banville would put out.
Really? I thought it was a decent show, once you got past the excessive amounts of Cork accents.
Listened a bit this morning.. another dull, boring, rubbishy affair with the same old guff and people.
Just a bit of arse boxing so el?
Everybody’s great….. everybody’s great…
Julian is a lovely man, wouldn't hurt a fly.
He overstepped the mark and apologised as I would expect.
I'm sure there is no ill feeling on Banville's part either, just a literary spat.
At least we have moved on from Kavanagh and Behan having a punch up in the gents in The Bailey.
Julian Gough had a “pop” at them awhile back, said they gave him “the yellow squirts and a scaldy hole”, but ended up apologising a couple of years ago. Really didn’t think he should have.
There is no problem not liking JB.
As with any author, read it or leave it, your choice.
As for the "humble man or woman in the street" they can have a go too and even take a swipe at our Edna as well 🙂
Ah well I did read him in my younger days but I found that underneath there wasn't much there for me, he was hard going and I never warmed to him or his words so I left him there on the shelf after giving him a fair go with a few books... He reminds me of an annoying dinner guest constantly dropping names like "in the words of the great philosopher X" or "as the great poet X once said" he would be tiring after a while I'd imagine... In that short excerpt there he manages to mention Moliere, Freud, proust, Cicero, Wittgenstein and Checkov along with our own Behan, Flann o brien, Kavanagh, MacLiammoir and Edwards that's some going in fairness in such a short piece, in the words of one of our great raconteurs a Mr Dunphy probably "a good writer not a great writer" imv also one of Ireland sacred cows of whom no wrong or criticism can be uttered by the humble man or woman in the street... Edna o Brien is another one of them (never mind I'm in that sort of mood today)
Back trolling again I see?
His chosen persona is that of the curmudgeon's curmudgeon that is a part of the attraction.
Is he serious or putting it on? Does it matter?
He is a great writer, this excerpt is very accessible and charming.
Get it out of the library and give it a go, then his back catalogue awaits.
Banville has "a great well come for himself" as we say around here, on about mourning his wife so deeply still, shur she was estranged from him at the time and no wonder, a sensible lady I would say, their relationship was long gone he having shacked up with another lady from the arts Council or something, then that anecdote about him falling on the street and somehow connecting the incident to the Jews being herded onto trains he's used in many interviews Lord above, best friend Harry Crosbie, I'll say no more
Have a bit of sense and kill the show at 1200.
Just a parade of luvvies and liggers. after that.
I wondered who it was. Sounded like a complete curmudgeon.
Fits right in with BOC so.
God above, I wouldn't be rushing out to buy one of Banvilles books listening to him, he'd depress an anadin
You’re right, protesting against a story time event for children is very unhealthy.
People objecting to a “drag queen story hour” is seen as homophobic by Rory O’Neil…
No discussion on why people would find this worthy of protest?
This is not a healthy society.
Same here, Ballsy can only go for the hour on Sunday.
Then swings over to whatever group of luvvies need a bit of free publicity.
Just another example of the serious dumbing down on all RTEs flagship radio shows.
Very sad situation.
