I think 16/17 is fine. England have it at 16. We have it at 17. I think it’s lower in some other countries.
The point I made originally was that the level of maturity of a 17 year old today isn't what it was in the past.
Physicality isn't the issue here at all, the notion that a 17 is nominally an adult today in the same way they were 50 years ago doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

Happy? No idea unless the situation arose. I answered this query earlier in response to another poster. I certainly wouldn’t be automatically calling the male a creep or a weirdo. I think you’re over-exaggerating it here.
I think that the drive to engage in sexual activity with a 17 year old as a more mature person (over 25 for arguments sake) is unusual.

Mine daughter is ten, I have a son as well and I'd be equally put out by a 27 year old woman sleeping with him at 17 as a man with my daughter at the same age.
You might be OK with it but I'd suggest you're in the minority.
Parents have a different perspective on what is right for THEIR kids, that does not always tally with others perspective on similar behaviour. It is natural for parents to be over protective, so I would not like my daughter to be in a relationship with an older boy. But you know what, no matter how much I forbid it, there is a realisation that I can't live their life for them, and can't always be with them, so if she was determined, I can't go around beating up young men, and I'm not going to lock my daughter in the house.
I never said I’d be ok with it. Unless the situation presents nobody can answer definitively. There are factors to consider and context and nuance. Not all 17 year old females are the same, and not all 27 year old males are the same.

In reality anyone should be looking at a person in their late twenties having sex with a teenager as unusual by normal standards. Sure its legal but you'd need to be actively looking for that situation to begin with.
But you are coming across that you’d be livid if your 17 year old daughter was dating a 27 year old. I can understand concerned-uncomfortable, but livid?
would you not even bother to discuss/think and analyse the relationship to get a handle on it?

The notion that McDermott did nothing wrong irks me. He did nothing right.
This is a guy who was on RTE radio pushing every imaginable type of woke crap on a daily basis, who would have had no issue tearing into another man accused of the same things he has been accused of.

I met my wife of 25 years the night of her 19th birthday in a bar in Cork, she was a second year medical student and I was 4 years older. Was I a different person at 27 as I was at 23? No. But a year and one day earlier she would be 17 and already in third level. Would it have made a difference the fact that she was in University training to be a Doctor?

I think most fathers don't want their daughters to have sex with anyone until they are in the ground. Not a morality issue. You obviously expect its happening but I don't want to know. Have kids. It's different for boys.
Why do you think that the older party would be specifically looking for a very young partner? That’s an assumption on your part now.
When I was in my later teen years a lot or girls my age were specifically looking for older boyfriends because they had means most of us didn’t have. It was perfectly normal, and it didn’t involve people cruising around the school gates.
Ok, using her for sex? I am not talking about the 27 year old using a 17 year old for sex.

Older boyfriends that were probably a couple of years older in average. A ten year age gap in a big deal at 17,not so much as you get older but at that age it is.
How many 17 year old are in committed relationships? It's s a bit of a non sequitur to suggest a 17 year old could suddenly be involved in a committed relationship with a 27 year old.
But would you not at least try to understand it and consider it before going straight to livid and 100 percent against it?
We don’t know if it is comparable though. As we don’t know how mature the 17 yr old was. I didn’t know my wife when she stated college at 17, she could have been a completely different person, or exactly the same. I certainly don’t think I changed between 23 and 27, apart from a thinning hairline.
