I think if Russia are left with Crimea, and Ukraine holding the territories controlling the water, Crimea loses any claim to resources in its adjacent waters as reparations.
But it will be a bitter pill for Ukraine.
I think Real Donald should go back to his "Slating Landlords" thread and try to take control of their properties ; )
Moscow orders Crimea bridge repairs to be completed by July 2023
Breaking Putin has signed a decree for the Kerch Bridge to be repaired ASAP
I suppose most people are already aware, but the area of Ukraine that Russia currently occupy (>90,000 km2) is larger than the island of Ireland (84,000 km2.)
To refer to it, and all the people that live there, as just "a bit of land" is highly disingenuous.
Russia’s nuclear deterrent has been fairly ineffective, in that the West is going to keep arming Ukraine regardless. If Russia does use nuclear weapons they’ll be comprehensively defeated, they know that.
Putin is 70 and I think he must realise that little is going to come of his imperial ambitions in his lifetime. Mobilisation has been a disaster for him, I think he’ll be really hoping for some kind of peace that he can spin as at least not being a defeat. If he can’t pull back his days are numbered, the war is unwinnable now.
Mayne if he’d just focused on the Donbas he could have succeeded.
I don't think either side is coming out of this happy to be fair, its a "least bad" situation that ends it probably. At some point western governments will start to turn off the spigot, likely when UKR has recovered its major cities lost so far but before Crimea i feel.
By July but according to some on here the damage was minimal and the bridge was open again
Wait....it will actually take them that long? The supporting beams must have gotten a really bad whack by that explosion and need to be torn down and set in again. There's also that railbridge that might have melted a bit and needs swapping out.
Oh, that's going to be fun for them to fix. Would be an awful shame if...most of the equipment they needed for that was out of reach due to sanctions...or even blown to bits by long range smart-munitions. Would be a shame....
There won't be a negotiation, so needen't worry yourself there.
It's a target, not a speed limit.
Depends on what you mean by defeated. The Western world has pivoted away from Russia - the East will never make up that shortfall, in fact the East usage is very much driven by Western demand and not so certain going forward.
So, a depleted, bankrupt Russia may be willing to do the unthinkable to be allowed to feed at the scraps* from the West's table.
*yes, this may be 100% bot bait, but the general point still stands.
Peace, honesty and red for bloodlust?
If Putin has put in a target of July, that means someone probably told him it would take two years. In fairness though, the 2 years would probably as estimate based on how long it would take to skim $200million off the top for yachts and not based on the actual work required though
And the likelihood of that bridge NOT being struck again by July 2023 would be close to zero. I'd wait until they were just about to cut the ribbon on the repairs being complete and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Back to Red Square one!
This isn't the only account saying the same thing we bought our own unit and are paying a subscription out of their own Pockets ,
So what's Elon on about considering he's not currently paying for anything
Bridges represent trade and commerce and co-operation and pragmatism. Russia don’t represent any of that and don’t deserve a bridge like the Kerch bridge. It’s an anomaly. Russia as country represents walls and fences and barbed wire and trenches. The trench building machines in operation in eastern Ukraine are far more Russian like.
The rich always have multiple agendas, that's how they get rich, riding as many horses as possible.
What Musk has forgotten though is that it's bad business to p*ss off your customer base.
Elon Musk is a fraudster, a conman, a pathological liar. You cannot believe a single word the man says.
So appease Putin now, and which Country will he attack next? Because that's what he will do. He has pledged to restore the USSR of old, even to restoring Alaska to Russia, (which they claim now was robbed from them) Not to mention the "unfinished business" of recovering all the Ex-USSR states. No, whatever it takes, Putin has to be stopped, and stopped in a manner that is indisputable and not even open to discussion afterwards.
I do wonder, would he have so many supporters if he didn’t get that hit transplant ? A big head of hair definitely changes peoples perceptions……
Close all the hatches, and I can tell you that they are very claustrophobic inside. And often its more than possible to determine the hygiene habits of the occupants (or lack of same !!!) or at least the one I was like that anyway. (Not western one BTW)
Oh, I'd say he will be very welcome in Hell, after all that's where he came from. Big welcome home when he arrives back
Musk is first and foremost a businessman and did not get rich by being a charity. Pulling funding for space X Starlink is not stopping the service just looking for someone to foot the bill. He can be a bit odd at times but who isn't? Ultimately someone will pay up most likely Unc Sam. Its a costly system to operate.
Tried an FT link but no luck!
He really is a massive man-baby. He behaves like a 14 year old boy which is probably why that demographic see him as an idol.
Just to put the tweet in question in the thread directly:
Like most tantrums this is not a good strategy though. He has shown how fickle he is which is a wake up call for anyone making the argument that more and more public services should instead be provided by him.
Their nuclear protected bunkers will not protect them from economic Armageddon, or the wrath of their own citizens when they realize how badly Putin has treated them.
A: SpaceX is not a charity. Someone has to foot the bill and until now the company itself has absorbed the cost.
B: The US has pledged billions to the war effort. I don't think any private military companies are donating free equipment.
C: Don't bite the hand that feeds you. That Ukrainian ambassador should have just ignored Musk. His tweets have no influence on western politics.
"Musk is first and foremost a businessman..."
You lost me there. Musk is first and foremost an attention-seeking f*ckwit who played the markets well enough to get rich and managed to pritt-stick his name onto projects run by competent people. The financial departments in Tesla etc.. must live their lives in terror of what his next Tweet is going to do to their workload.
He might see himself as some kind of real life Tony Stark, but he's more akin to a Tesco-value Howard Hughes....and by that I mean Hughes near the end of his life when he lost a load of his marbles. Sure, Starlink should be paid for, but it's damn odd timing right after Crazy Prices Howard Hughes signaled his support for peace deals that would benefit 2 dictatorships.
I think the main thing Musk cares about is money and secure govt. contracts for his companies (leaving aside his personal view on whether there should be efforts to make "peace" with Putin/Russia + Ukraine's anger over that!).
IMO he is on a campaign to get the almost infinite US military money spigot hooked up to Starlink + paying for it for Ukraine. I suppose similar to how SpaceX's flow of US govt. money (for delivery of equipment + astronauts to orbit etc.) is almost guaranteed now. He would probably be doing that irrespective of Ukraine criticising him.
e.g. was reading below article about it this morning:
Documents obtained by CNN show that last month Musk’s SpaceX sent a letter to the Pentagon saying it can no longer continue to fund the Starlink service as it has. The letter also requested that the Pentagon take over funding for Ukraine’s government and military use of Starlink, which SpaceX claims would cost more than $120 million for the rest of the year and could cost close to $400 million for the next 12 months.
edit: Sorry @nigeldaniel, reading back + just noticed you posted this.
I'm not disputing A or B. What I'm pointing out is that Musk decided to withdraw support after someone literally hurt his feelings online. That's pathetic.
(As for point C - The guy who told him to F off isn't even an ambassador anymore.)
Musk is a fcking muppet. Not much else to say on him.
Yes, but at that stage, Ukraine was the target for Russia, and not Poland. It was only when Russia attacked Ukraine back in 2014, that Poland decided maybe we will be next. And that was good thinking, and thereafter planning, Russia never mentioned being attacked by Poland at that stage. BTW, I don't know of any plan for Poland to attack Belarus (aside from a poster asking the question) do you? And this Russian " we will be attacked, NATO etc. was just excuses for what they are doing in Ukraine. Putin intended taking Ukraine regardless, and NATO, attacks etc were just excuses.
