The D4/faux mid Atlantic American has become the Irish media standard it seems. To the extent where I don’t pay much attention to what is being said, because it all sounds so similar.
Then I find when I hear a regional/normal/non manufactured accent on air - I pay much more attention. Because it stands out from the samey D4 stuff on shows which a lot of times seem to blend in with the D4/Faux American adverts.
If for example I left Newstalk on by mistake when Andrea Gilligan is on. Even if it is the distance what she says stands out, because of her natural Donegal accent. No matter what guff she is talking about!
The bit that annoys me more is not the use of manufactured accents, but ‘upspeak’ or overuse of it.
And it always seems like an ‘upspeak’ competition when two women are talking on air. Particularly on subjects where they feel the need to show empathy on some intangible ‘journey’ or other. Then the upspeak goes into overdrive.
Even in subjects which don’t require empathy, if Jess Kelly finds a new piece of tech she ‘loves’ prepare for an ‘upspeak bombardment’ on your earlobes!
But it seems to have become the norm as well. Even Pat does it occasionally to be part of the gang!
