Nothing wrong with digging an entrenched position, that's why we have engineers. In Russian doctrine (and frankly, Western doctrine), defensive positions exist in order to (a) attrit enemy attacks to allow counter-offensive operation,and (b) reduce manning requirements for one sector of the line to allow for offensive operations in another sector.

IIRC the Germans hit them both in Belgium and through the Ardennes. Pincer movement and all that. It could be argued that if anything the Maginot line made that easier. Kept enough troops defending it and made a pocket where your enemy made one side of it. Unless Russia makes it run the length of "their" territory it's going to be bypassable.
I suppose Russia is counting on no direct NATO involvement, because that position wouldn't last too long if everything behind it was target. It would be a handy aiming point if nothing else. They seem to be expecting more than small bands of Ukrainian military. Or the simpler reasoning might be this is now "our border"? They have previous with Berlin and East Germany. They like an oul wall.
What I have noticed and what with all their talk of "nazis", the Russian spin makes little effort to tone down their rhetoric including clearly genocidal rhetoric. The actual German nazis tended to sugar coat it, or directly obscure their intent much more. Just enough for most of the war to keep some sort of plausible deniability among their population, even though a large proportion had at least an idea of what was afoot. The Russians just don't seem to care. That internet meme of "are we the baddies" could well have come up at least in the earlier parts of WW2 for Germans, but it's barely on the radar of the Russian spin machine. Full holy war, warts and all, kill all our enemies, zero sense of self awareness stuff. And worse it's getting.

And for comparison the pre-Afghan invasion, infant /mother deaths need to be included. They were massive, and only imoroved aftre the arrival of the US and allies, who rebuilt, staffed and supplied the hospitals with medicine, equipment etc. They also paid the bills associated with the operation of the Hospitals.

Exactly. That and their increasingly shrill and apocalyptic stuff is crazy town indeed. No matter how this war ultimately goes in my opinion Russia needs to be completely frozen out by the rest of the world politically and economically until they soften their cough and those who support them need to get with that programme or get frozen out too.
