And as if the raiders hadn’t a bad enough week. Damon Annette is being sued for a car crash last year in which he caused “bodily harm” to another motorist while speeding and he’s alleged to have left the scene. And there’s video of him waving a gun around threatening people which has now come to light. I feel sorry for Mike mayock.

After all that went down last week not a huge surprise that we lost to the Giants - the leadership in the locker room will be sorely tested this season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

So I couldnt sleep on Sunday night (well I did initially then for some reason woke up about 3:10am) and so got up to see how the match was going.......well I got to see the Chiefs play. Cause we didnt. Aw, it was like watching us at the end of last season. The Defense was worn down and was a non-factor. We coldnt get going on offense at all (The DJax reception/interception was farcical, he actually caught the ball then allowed it to be knocked away from him). Terrible game. Having said that, with the month the organisation has had, its no surprise. No other team has probably had to face the month we have had, with Gruden going and then the Ruggs/Arnette scenarios. I really do feel for the players and the organisation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

i do feel for the players and coaches - they are right in the middle of controversy from players and a HC no longer with the team.

the only way forward is for them to stay together - big onus on the senior players to keep everyone focussed on the rest of the season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Exactly Kev. Definitely a mark of how strong the team is as an organisation, but this should never have had to happen to them. We're not out of the race yet, but we really do need to blow the Bengals off the park on Sunday night

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Absolutely - we need a confidence booster going into the second half of the season. Hopefully DeSean Jackson had some good practice time with Derek Carr this week and they can help open up the passing game a bit

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

After watching that game unfold on Sunday night I can see that this team is going to struggle badly down the stretch. The defense are clearly feeling the pressure knowing they are not getting any help from a depleted and confidence lacking offense.

There were 3 massive 3rd downs in the first half that we gave up very poor 15 yard penalties to give life to the Bengals.

Our run game is not functioning with either Kenyan Drake or Josh Jacobs who is for some reason now being used as a pass catcher and this is making it easy for teams to double team Darren Waller or Hunter Renfrow. The O-line needs further improvement after the off season of waives and trades.

I am struggling to see even 3 more wins on the schedule after last week (Washington/Denver and maybe Cleveland) and at this point I would not be at all surprised to see us finish 6-11 and bottom of the division. I really hope I am way off but I has seen this car crash too many times...

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yep totally saw that coming ….

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

We are nothing if not interesting. Now can we build on it against Washington?

Would be great if Darren Waller can get back but honestly no clue if he can play with the knee injury.

Washington had a good win against the seahawks last night and their defense is coming along really well lately. I expect it to go down to the wire but predictions in the NFL this year are like reading tea leaves with the way the some results have gone

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

close loss last night - it’s going to be a hard slog for the rest of the year if we can’t get some production out of our wrs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Wow that was bad tonight. I did not expect us to win but that was a beat down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Given that half of Cleveland was out with Covid last night it was not easy to prep for that game so I am very happy we won but still worried that our offense is regressing - even with all of our own injury problems!

I thought we had blown it with the interception but fair play to Derek Carr for putting that out of his head and coming back with a drive to setup the FG.

This season has been so weird - I cant even begin to predict whats going to happen for the last 3 weeks. Just got to enjoy the ride I suppose...

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

RIP John Madden. A giant of the game. You will be missed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

No matter what happens next week - I have to give credit to Rich Bisaccia and the Team. They have really put in a big effort to stay in contention for the playoffs with all that has gone on , losing HC and 2 top offensive players and a 1st rd drafted CB.

Great final drive with massive catches by Zay Jones and Hunter Renfrew. Daniel Carlson is becoming a real clutch kicker

Happy New Year lads and its great that the Raiders are still relevant going into the final week. A winning season too , no matter what! As you said, Kev, credit to Rich and his Management team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

    Happy new year !

yep I don’t think we will beat the chargers on Sunday but progress has been made and let’s see how we go.

Really hope we can lock down a new head coach early and get a plan in place for next year to push on from this seasons positive improvement

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Waller is apparently in line for a return on Sunday. If that happens it will be a massive boost for the Offense. Moreau is not turning into the player fans hoped he would become. Having Waller and Renfrow working the short and medium routes will be crucial to having a chance to beat the Chargers!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

It would be great to have Darren Waller back for sure but only if he is really healthy. We really miss that deep threat- I was hoping desean Jackson would be more of a factor for us but we just haven’t had everyone available to play since the Dallas game so that doesn’t help him getting settled in and take some attention off him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

wow - what an end to the season! its been a rollercoaster ride. I am glad that Derek Carr has a chance to lead us in a playoff game, and that it is on Saturday night so I can watch it.

I stayed up to watch the game and it was totally mental!! Very enjoyable result but I got put through the emotional wringer during it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Fair play for staying up to watch it - I had work in the morning and only caught the highlights. The end of that game would have put years on to me!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

it was always going to be tough and after the fumble in the first half I never really felt we were able to get back into the game. A lot of miscues on the o line cost us momentum - that definitely needs to be tightened up next year. Alex leatherwood has struggled and the 1st round status hasn’t been justified.

still though I thought the team stayed in the game and was happy that they were in a position to tie late on. The defense did well to contain the bengals and keep them in contention.

lets hope 2022 is a better and less controversial year for the raiders!

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I'm still proud to be a Raider fan today. We didnt deserve to win and agreed on the O-Line, Kev. It was awful last night. But we can hold our heads high nonetheless! Oh, and well done Cincy! Burrow is one hell of a QB.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yes I agree with you - proud of the team and being a fan, something that hasn't always been true over the last 20 years since we were in the superbowl last.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

And now Mayock is gone....let the management carousel spin begin!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yeah having both 1st round picks from 2 years ago flame out is always going to put the GM on the hot seat. His low and mid round picks have been great but Ruggs and Arnett let him down massively.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Whats disappointing already is that at least one candidate is mentioned because his DAD was a success in the organisation. I'm referring to the son of Ron Wolf. I mean, shouldnt we be appointing on the basis of talent as opposed to ties with the organisation? By the way, the guy might be well capable but the reason he is being mentioned is because of his Dad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yes we have a habit making hires based on previous ties to the club - Mark Davis will continue to follow that path I fear . I would like to see us hire a GM first and then a Head coach who the GM has a say in. The previous situation was not ideal - always felt that Gruden had the final say on who we brought in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

The Bengals keep rolling - I wonder how they will do against the Chiefs? I cant see them winning but you never know they surprised KC earlier in the year. That will give them some confidence, I hate to say it but Kansas City look unstoppable - I think only the Rams defense can slow them down.

The path to the Superbowl is paved with "unstoppable" teams. I couldnt believe it watching that game as they collapsed!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

So true. The opportunity just before half time to score was huge that the bengals got the stop. I think that turned around their confidence.

I do fear for that bengals o line in the super bowl against Aaron Donald and Vonn Miller though.

Devante Adams - welcome to Raider nation!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Wow! This season the AFC west has been busy with Trades.

Khalil Mack back in the division with the Chargers , Russell Wilson with the Broncos. We had to make a move and it makes a lot of sense especially if we renew Derek Carr.

Will be interesting seeing how this division plays out next year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I wasnt sure initially about the new management team but it certainly looks like they are a measured professional team. I like that they arent afraid to splash out and also that they got Adams and Chandler. It would appear that they are going to use the current O-line personnel which worries me a little but I'm assuming McDaniels thinks we have the right players, the training and system just needs tweaking. I'm glad that they seem committed to Carr and hopefully this puts an end to the uncertainty about his status. The AFC West will be insane this season! I'm thinking of the NFC East in the late 80s early 90s type insane!! Anyways its good to see football in some form is back, even if no-one has snapped a ball yet!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

yep The o line will be a weakness but hopefully we have more weapons and Carr won’t have to hold the ball long - McDaniels scheme is to get the ball out quick which I think will suit us.

The defense is where we do need to see an improvement. I was disappointed to see Yannick Ngakoue go as he was a great leader last year but Chandler Jones is a really good addition.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Delighted to see Derek Carr getting an extension for 3yrs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

I was surprised Josh Jacobs featured so much in the HOF game. Does anyone feel like McDaniels was putting him in the shop window or is he really just giving all the RBs reps?

Its not a good sign seeing as he didn't get the 5th year contract extension. Given his MO I do think McDaniels will implement a RB by committee vs a workhorse back so it will be a prove it year one way or another. I know its only preseason but just nice to watch a game again :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Really good showing by Davante Adams last week - nice catch for the TD as well. Not a great day for Derek Carr but even with 5 turnovers we only lost the game by 5 points.

I do feel like the Chargers are going to be really motivated this year after how they threw away a post season spot last year. Khalil Mack is an excellent pick up for them and is going to be a nightmare with Bosa on the other side. A real test now is to rebound and get a win at home against the cardinals who will be smarting from the beatdown they got from the Chiefs.

Hi Lads, having stuck it out watching the match, it was a real gut punch watching the end of that game. That loss hurt last night. I still think we have the right management and personnel but we really have to pull it out of the bag against Tennessee. In a timezone that West Coast teams normally struggle with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

So... that happened, We were in cruise control 1st half and then once Arizona got going we had no answer on offense. Credit to the defense , they kept us in it and only some moments of real quality from Kyler Murray we may have held on but just too many mistakes no offense to overcome.

The offense went very conservative in the 2nd half and O-line protection completely broke down , production on the ground was poor and we didn't take any time off the clock.

Need to build on the positives from the 1st half and kick on...

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I dont know what to say about last night's efforts......Chandler Jones at the moment is a definite bust and the defense as a group is awful. On Offense Waller picked a bad night to have an off one, oh Well. Denver at home, what could possibly go wrong????

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

its been a season for strange results so who knows maybe we will beat Denver but if not it could get ugly very quick - kansas city up next after that!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Well would you look at that -we actually won a game!

Great performance from the defence and also from the big players on offence

We will need to build on that for next weeks game vs chiefs cos they looked impressive against Tampa bay last night

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

We won!!! Well done us!!! Not even thinking about next week but this was nice to see. Great seeing another team get more penalties than us and we seemed to be much more settled in all aspect of play. It would be nice if..................no, I said I wasnt going to think about about next week and thats the way I'm keeping it!

And they actually showed the game on Sky, too. No sitting there hoping it came up on the Radzone!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Only caught the highlights this morning (and the lowlights at the end of the game)

but some positives to take going into arrowhead and losing by 1 pt isn’t bad but some of the decisions late in the game were very strange - 2pt conversion when an extra point ties it with 4 mins left , the 4th down play call where the routes got mixed up when maybe a quick slant or a run would have been better giving how well josh Jacobs was doing last night.

I know this team is 1-4 and hard to argue based on some of the performances. I feel like McDaniels still doesn’t have a good idea how to get the best out of what is there.

it’s probably a good week for the break to regroup and see what can be rescued out of the season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Funny, although we are 1-4 I still feel the season has not run away from us. Our schedule gets a lot easier from this point on for hte next six weeks. Now, I'm not suggesting that we are going to win 6 weeks in a row, but the Texans, Saints, Seahawks, Jaguars, Colts and Broncos are games we should be able to compete in, if not win. We do need to regroup and come out firing on all cylinders in a fortnight. McDaniels needs to readjust his playcalling and we need to see the side of him that brought the Pats so much success.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Whats been really strange is that he has not found a way to get the ball to Darren Waller on any consistency this year so far - 16 catches in 5 games is way below what I expected. I understood Davante Adams would get more targets but I hoped that would leave more space for Waller and have better opportunities in the intermediate routes but its just not working out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Seems like we have found a formula the last few weeks with josh jacobs running the ball and being more balanced on offense.

hope we can keep that up for the next few games and get the season going in the right direction.
