Large scale damage, photos look very serious.
Hopefully no fatalities or serious injuries, but hard not to imagine people will have been hurt in that.
If this was a gas explosion it was a big gas source, probably an LPG tank if there is no piped natural gas. A domestic gas cylinder didn’t cause this.
It’s a testament to the design and quality of the garages petrol / diesel storage tanks that they didn’t rupture. The carnage if all of that flammable fuel had been added to that explosion would have been unimaginable. The fact rescue workers are working away means they’re not concerned about this fuel.
You have to hope there are more people alive in the rubble.
Listening to Radio One now, they’re expecting to figure to hit ten with some certainty. RIP.
I must say I feared the worst when the initial photos showed cars at almost every fuel pump, it could scarcely have been a busier time of day. And the fact it was not long after schools let out, well that's just tragic beyond belief.
Lets hope and pray it doesn't rise much above 7 lost, as its fair to say this is already looking like the worst civil disaster in the State for manys a year.
May they rest in peace.
The picture from the Irish times which was taken from above was when I really got the scale of the explosion.
What are you even talking about though? It looks pretty clear from the photos that the explosion centred above the petrol station. The pumps are relatively undamaged, the cars are not blow up or turned over meanwhile the floor above is completely devastated. I'm not speculating on what caused it but to me it seems very obvious from the photos that this explosion didn't occur at ground level so I don't think your experience is adding much to the discussion here....anyway it will all come out eventually.
Very sad to see it happen. Always more real when it's in your own country.
So what? The source is not yet known/disclosed.
"Petrol Station" could include shop & pumps.
Pumps don't appear to have been the source.
Explosion appears to have been over the shop.
RIP. Terrible stuff. Devastating.
Is there any indication of possible terrorism?
Two things I’m hearing from RTE radio. A fatality count of over 7 is expected, and could be more if more deceased are found or injured victims succumb to injuries. There is an assumption it is an explosion from a source upstairs in one of the apartments.
I can’t imagine what the source might be, whether it is a battery set or a potentially explosive gaseous substance that was stored or got “piped” up into that section.
Maybe you should stick to the gangland thread with posters of the same mindset as you
The sheer extent of devastation will no doubt at all lead Gardai to take all measures to rule this out, however unlikely it is.
This is so heartbreaking for the community. Did anyone get out unscathed or alive?...haven't read any eyewitness accounts.
There does seem a fair amount of solar panels up on the roof which could equal a lot of battery storage needed
7 people were taken to Letterkenny Hospital, and at least one brought down to Dublin.
Seems very much like a gas explosion. No presence of fire in any of the images taken directly afterwards.
Keep the speculation going and I'm going to issue bans from here on as warnings are falling on deaf ears.
It is so rare in a tragedy that the death toll is higher than the injured....which will tell you the sheer force of this...seen commentary on Facebook that explosions like this can result in loss of hearing,sight...I'd imagine it is nasty to be at the epicentre of this...a man who lived 1km away said he was working from home and he came off his seat with the force of it.Surprisingly he went down to the village and said there was actually a man uninjured in one of the apartments, he was helped down with a ladder.
Re the mobile phone spark.. I have seen this happen with the cheap brands....it wouldnt cause an explosion...maybe a small fire if the spark shot out and landed on something flammable.
Li battery would burn on and not cause such a large explosion (obviously any spark or electrical source could ignite a gas, vapour or liquid leak)
Whats the point of the thread? Is it an RIP thread only? I havent posted anything in it yet.
I've given my reasons in previous posts. Let's leave it at that.
@Gusser09 do not post in this thread again.
Effort of finding them. So is it just RIP and then confirmed stuff from the news anybody is allowed post?
A fire after that explosion would have been way more serious
I went back, I think your right - no discussion.
May the souls of dead Rest In Peace. Prayers for their families and those who are injured.
Thread name needs to be changed to RIP then really. Instead of expecting everyone to read through all the pages.
RTÉ now reporting nine dead with people still missing.
It will be difficult to know exactly who is missing . Then someone could have ran into the shop and no one would know him or her .
No need to change the thread title. No speculation, staying on topic together with showing respect and condolences to all those affected will be more than acceptable.
