I will put the hypersonic up with the 5 tanks and 5 fancy jets they have.
I read somewhere that 6 more weeks of conventional bombing would have ended the war.
That's the equivalent of the drunk fella thinking he's frightening the other drunk fella by shadowboxing on the opposite side of the carpark to the chipper
The Manhattan scientists knew full well the destructive nature of the bomb and made their concerns known to both Roosevelt and Truman at the time. Scientists that designed and built both Fat Man and Little Boy urged the President to seriously reconsider using it and were largely against its use themselves by 1945, as they deemed it to be unnecessary by then because of how the war had progressed. So conflicted were some of them that the joined in with Leo Szilard in drafting a petition to the White House that recommended against using the bomb, because they were well aware of the monster that they had created.
“I knew by this time that it would not be possible to dissuade the government from using the bomb against the cities of Japan...I thought the time had come for the scientists to go on record against the use of the bomb against the cities of Japan on moral grounds."
Szilard, who along with Albert Einstein, had originally urged Roosevelt to begin research on an atomic weapon in 1939, had come to a complete about face with regards to its actual use in 1945.
Yes, according to Ukraine they shot down most of the six X-101 air launched cruise missiles recently, no doubt helped by real time tracking intelligence. I think what the original question was getting at is why Russia is not carpet-bombing assembled Ukrainian forces with their fleet of bombers.
They were being used up until very recently, they were launching missles from the Russian side of the blacksea where they are relatively safe from anti aircraft defenses,
They lost one tu22m bomber over Georgia a few years back due to a Anti aircraft defenses ever since they only use fighters to bomb in conflict areas .,,
thats true, but its still doing hypersonic speed and does a semi ballistic trajectory and will be harder to stop than a iskander or kalibr missile unless you detect it early, and Ukraine doesnt have AWACS either, unless NATO provide it.
And i think you need atleast a THAAD or Patriot system to be able to stop them, something Ukraine dont have.
The original question was why the Russian fleet of heavy bombers is absent. If they were launching missiles from these bombers, they would be tracked from take off.
They could launch hypersonic missiles, but how many do they actually have? If they are used in Ukraine, how many are left as a deterrent. There is a reason they are used so infrequently. A ground-launched Armenian Iskander missile was shot down.
More whataboutery and false equivalences. This discussion is about Ukraine 2022 and not Iraq 20 years ago. The 2nd Gulf war may have been unjustified in some respects, but Saddam was hugely brutal and murderous. He has waged a war of aggression and invasion against Kuwait a few years previously; he had previous form against Iran; he had a record of using chemical weapons. Ukraine was never any threat to anyone, except perhaps by threatening to become a free and democratic society.
So stick to the point.
Tell me Hello, why would we (the Irish) protest against something we had no hand act or part in??? And as for the US planes carrying weapons while transiting through Shannon, way back then (pre-2003) how many Irish actually knew this was going on? Don't be collectively blaming the Irish for Iraq, or any other world power misadventures / wars etc. Russia used Shannon a lot too, if I remember, and do you honestly believe that all their cargoes were innocent?
The kinhal was debunked as an air launched cruise missile rather than an actual new hypersonic weapon, that was only fired once in Ukraine and once in Syria.
Didn't seem to make any real difference
I think Julia Davis on Twitter is the only one doing clips with translations. The show is two and a half hours long, making it difficult for anyone to subtitle it in English.
No it wouldn't,they might pick up a launch but a satellite wouldn't be able to track a cruise missile to that degree,
It's nato airborne intelligence aircraft and radar that tracks missles ,and even at that they can only defend an area where there is Anti aircraft defenses already active
Not if they use hypersonic nuclear capable kinzhal,it will be harder to stop, or saturation attacks
And not all missiles are stopped, some get trough, even subsonic kalibr
Ukraine has been shooting down cruise missiles for months. They are getting real time satellite data that would alert them with time to spare.
If that show is as insane as the Twitter clips suggest, I'd be tempted to watch whole episodes of it.
"Our military leaders are failing us in Ukraine. Should we flay them alive and make their children watch?"
"No, I think we should examine some other options first..."
"What are you? Some kind of ten-gendered Western liberal?"
Problem is that would most likey be using standoff weapons from hundreds of kilometers away,so air defence would be useless
My guess is a nuclear tipped cruise missile
With gravity bombs you wont last long in contested air space, unless you use a stealthy bomber
A tiny percentage protested...
So yes, we did, to our great shame.
The US used nuclear weapons to end a war of aggression and conquest waged against it by Imperial Japan. Russia using nuclear weapons to further their own war of conquest and imperialism, a war that they fully chose, would set a precedent.
Giant asses
Btw is there a reliable source (ie with accurate subtitles) for the daily highlights with Solovyov and his whacky crew? It's weirdly addictive viewing and when you get past all the bluster offers a certain insight into the real mood among Kremlin cheerleaders
Briany, I'd say that there are many war hawks in NATO, in a fever to get a chance to get stuck into Putin, basically for the reasons you have outlined...the endless deniable skirmishes with NATO etc. They are drooling at the thought and would just love to attend one of Wagner's concerts, and show off their latest percussion instruments😊
If Russia launched a fleet of bombers, they would be tracked from the moment they lined up for take off. Every BUK in Ukraine would be waiting for them.
As I remember it, hundreds of thousands did in protest in England against the Iraq war at the time. In Ireland between 80'000 and 100'000 protested too. So no, we did not accept the war in Iraq.
This makes no sense. Putin wants to end the domestic consequences of this war now. You think he really gives a **** if thousands of soldiers are killed? If he wanted to end the war he would not have illegally annexed large areas of Urkaine. That has now forced a permanent war.
Using a nuclear weapon would not end the war, it just makes the domestic consequences infinitely more severe. This is exactly what Putin doesn't want. He is threatening nukes in order to deflate support for Ukraine in the west.
Joe Rogan had some useful idiot comedian on recently who was basically licking Putin's boots exactly as he wants people to. He was saying our only priority and concern is to avoid war with Putin, because he has nuclear weapons. This is the meaning of Putin's threat, to play on that kind of ignorance and gullibility and undermine solidarity with Ukraine. It has no other value, politically or militarily.
Ironically, this alone demonstrates why, in the long run, removing Saddam Hussein was probably justified. He obstructed weapons inspectors at every turn. The consequences of someone like Saddam, with a history of aggressive conquest of neighbouring countries and genocide, getting his hands on nuclear weapons at some point was not worth the risk, and ultimately led to war.
Though the full destructive power of the weapons was not fully understood at the time. They certainly knew it was a huge bomb capable of causing enormous damage and fatalities, but I don't think even they fully realised the psychological impact of using such a weapon in war, nor things like radiation sickness and contamination of the ground.
I'd think that what is really limiting Russian military operations is that you have some of worlds best remote sensing and intelligence systems closely monitoring what they're doing. When Putin says that Russia is up against a bigger power than Ukraine, he's correct in that sense. And this help is rightly given to Ukraine.
Just another day in Russia under Putin
It might stop advances alright but lead to the total destruction of Russian land, sea and air forces in Ukraine and possible further.
We are told that Russia has been clearly & repeatedly advised of the consequences.
Russia can end the war anytime they want by withdrawing all military, paying massive reparations and handing over suspected war criminals.
Have wondered about their bombers ,+ are they afraid of losing them to Ukrainian air defences?
Going by their actions, unlikely Russia haven't used them more out of care for Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure (as some have claimed here). Think they may have been used for some attacks on Mariupol (?), but that was a city Russia had completely surrounded and isolated, with the beseiged Ukrainian army defenders inside running low on weapons and ammunition.
Perhaps they fear a WW2 style attrition rate if they send them to attack a Ukrainian city well beyond their front line, or even parts of Ukraine's front line. These are I expect (speaking as a non expert) expensive and complex pieces of equipment with a crew that take a very long time to train.
Once these are lost (or even if the force of them is reduced substantially from what it is today), I don't think Russia can ever replace them so that is one leg of their nuclear "triad" amputated, and another big blow to their remaining delusions of being a superpower like US/China.
