Here’s the bit where he mentioned the nuclear bombing of Japan:
“The United States is the only country in the world that has used nuclear weapons twice, destroying the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. And they created a precedent.”
The “and they created a precedent” bit sounds ominous. But then he goes on to say:
“They had only one goal, as with the nuclear bombing of Japanese cities: to intimidate our country and the rest of the world.”
So he doesn’t seems to be casting it as “they did it, so we can do it”. He’s actually admitting that the threat of nuclear weapons is a reprehensible, bullying tactic.
So my point really is that there was nothing explicit in his nuclear rhetoric; he leaves that to his lackeys, which serves to create ambiguity as to whether it’s bluster or policy. And he did not take the opportunity of this speech to clarify that, meaning that the ambiguity is strategic.
Of course, his rant was a mass of lies, hypocrisy and contradictions, so maybe there’s no definitive analysis. And maybe that’s the point.
The hypocrisy is thick - he could as well be talking about Russia in most of this-
Konstantin Kisin on Twitter: "I wish every single person in the West would listen to Putin's speech. Obviously, that won't happen so let me summarise as a professional translator for 10+ years. He states, as he has done from the outset, what his intentions and complaints are in the plainest terms possible.🧵" / Twitter
LOL, Patrushev does not look impressed-
Was it not reported that the Duma brought in new legislation with prison penalty for surrendering? 10 year I think the term is.
Great way to treat your troops - die or face jail/ concentration camp.
That’s assuming the POWs opt for repatriation. For some, especially those new conscripts who have been rumoured to look up *how to surrender*, they may want to stay away from Russia in its current state. Also a 10 year jail term in Russia lately has a knack of being commuted to front line service.
Putin really missed the boat didn’t he. He belongs in a different time. His hate for the West along with the platform he has is scary. Imo a lot of how this plays out relies on how India and China react over time. Currently they seem happy to sit on the fence, see who wins and then align themselves that way.
Ironically, it was the Russians declaring war on Japan which forced them to surrender rather than the bombs.
You're wildly assuming putin is a mental case. He'e not. You're wildly assuming "intelligent Russians" don't support him. You're wildly assuming the regime doesn't support him. You're wildly assuming he was ever a stable statesman. Was he "stable" when he invaded Georgia, Chechnya and Crimea and baccked Assad in Syria? Was he "stable" when he had his opposition gaoled, or murdered? And I think we can gloss over the daft stuff about crystal meth and coke. 😂
Russians definitely putting up a fight. Looks like the days of retreating are over.
The Russian declaration was another nail in the coffin for Japan, the atomic bombs were damn near the entire lid. They blinked after the first bomb fell, but were still at the "this surely couldn't be a single weapon, could it" stage. The second detonation cleared that up. IIRC at the time the US didn't have enough fissile material for a third one, or it would have taken time to get it together. The majority of the huge cost of the Manhattan project went on refining the material. Though funny enough it wasn't the most expensive weapon of the war, that would be the development of the B-29 Bomber which dropped the first two bombs.
The Allies flattened German cities(which Comrade Stalin was 110% behind) and Germans kept on fighting, but it seems the psycholigical impact of one horror device outweighs tens of thousands of them, even if they achieve the same aims.
Now the US could have dropped the bomb(s) on outlying islands of Japan and likely would have the same effect, plus they got to test out the new bomb's operational logistics and test out two competing designs for the bomb.
They can either be shot in the front or in the back.
Might as well go down swinging.
Another pro Nazi thread nuked 💥
Welcome to Lyman
Can only imagine the losses on both sides are vast.
No more retreating...
That got old really fast 🤣
This is another unit from yesterday Stavky near Lyman, orc's are either all dead or retreating???
Don’t have a lot of military knowledge but can someone explain why military aircraft and navy vessels would kept their ATIS’s anything other than off……surely letting the world and its mother as well as enemy knowing your exact position and movements in real time is about as much as a military ‘own goal’ that you could possibly score….?
This suggests that the last road out of Lyman may finally be cut.
I just saw a video of 5 pigs eating a dead Russian soldier. Here's something else-
They still have to operate safely regarding air traffic control so that's a lot of it. Often it is deliberate. Basically telling your enemy "here I am, no cares given that you can see me. I want you to see me, so you know what's ranged against you". Plus unless we're dealing with actual stealth aircraft the enemy radars can already see them.
They turn them on to send a warning to the enemy.
Basically to show 1) we can see what your doing or 2) if you **** around, you will find out.
Ukrainian forces geolocated at the north and south of Lyman, that should be the town liberated now.
Best guess now is that the Russians will fall back to the next best line of defence around Kreminna.
Looks like some Russian soldiers stole some civilian vehicles and got ambushed while trying to get away.
Am hoping we see more videos like this indicating a disorderly withdrawal.
Another 20+ civilians killed in an attack on a civilian convoy in Kharkiv this morning
Which one?
..
Shocking. Any links?
If large numbers of Russian troops are holed up in Lyman, it'll be very interesting to contrast their resistance with that of the Avozstal defenders.
My guess is that they'll surrender in large numbers.
3-5k Russians in Lyman is clearly an absurd number. Even if the number was 100-200 left behind and captured, it would indicate serious problems in the Russian military.
More drunken Russian troops. It's very evident that one of the main reasons they are losing this war is because of how unprofessional and disorganised they are. There's no way an army of alcoholics could ever form an elite fighting force.
