Not for him to say.
Its for the Nations of the North Atlantic Council to decide. He's only the secretary.
Circumstances will dictate, as they always have and always will.
Ze Zerman reporters....rats, will sell out anyone at any time
Glad to see him tell a couple of those reporters that they wouldn't be advising Ukraine not to attack Russia on the "annexed territories".
Yes, that is a good summary. Essentially the reasons they won't be accepted now are similar (though not exactly the same) as before the invasion. Certainly their interoperability has increased but the immediate issue with A5 has changed the scale completely.
But its important to point out that there is no "fudge" to get accepted by pretending there is no territorial dispute. You can't get in on a technicality.
Stolenberg's speech came off as damage control.
Yes, NATO will support Ukraine, but throwing cold water on the notion that it could quickly join NATO.
It isn't a rule, as such. There's no membership criteria checklist, other than unanimous approval by the other members, but there is general principles that are agreed as "minimum requirements", such as:
The issue for Ukraine is that they currently have Russia occupying and controlling a good percentage of their territory. If they were to join NATO, the fact that Russia are fighting them on Ukrainian soil would immediately trigger Article 5, the mutual defense agreement. So the rest of NATO would be obliged to come directly to defend Ukraine, which would obviously put them in direct conflict with Russia.
That seems to be something that existing NATO members haven't been ready to commit to up until now. So by extension, they're very unlikely to get NATO membership while they're fighting Russia on Ukrainian soil. Unless NATO decide that they're willing to go toe-to-toe with Russia, or they decide that somehow the current front lines don't count.
Putin on stage now at that concert for more demented nonsense:
It's on the Wall Street Journal etc. Leaves are still green here too...
He's not going to be taking that line. Ukraine is Ukraine is Ukraine. They're not going to concede an inch of land. (Not under current circumstances anyway)
He's doing this as a direct response to Putin's actions today. An act of defiance, to show that Ukraine will make it's own way in the world, and that it is completely ignoring the sham attempt to annex part of it's sovereign territory.
Whether NATO file the application under "pending", due to them not controlling their own borders currently, or whether NATO have pre-agreed some kind of process for them is the only open question I can see at the moment.
I guess we'll see what the NATO speech contains. I'd be surprised, but you never know....
I'm not sure...but it's been mentioned a few times on this thread. After I posted I checked and I couldn't find it on the NATO website either.
Where did this disputed territory stopping application thing come from?
It requires unanimous approval by all members. That's it.
Awfully easily perplexed
He could be taking the line that since Russia has annexed the territory, it is no longer Ukrainian territory that is disputed so his application can go ahead.
I doubt it though, since to argue that would be to legitimise the Russian annexation.
Tricky ain't it?
A pic from the video?
The one with autumnal brown leaves in the background around Zelensky's head? Perplexed my left one.
Let's see what NATO has to say:-
Call between US National Security Adviser @JakeSullivan46 and @NATO SecGen @jensstoltenberg on Ukraine. "They discussed their shared concern over Russia's illegitimate attempts to purportedly annex Ukrainian territory. protection of critical infrastructure"
Jens is about to kick off
I think myself the best way now the Ukraine is to retake one annexed area as quickly as they can. The longer they wait the trickier it gets. I do not think Russian people by the large would be too bothered by that. As for Russian clams of information about N1 N2 I wouldn't take them too seriously. Russia has a track records off claiming proof of one kind or another whether its sinking a ferry or shooting down civilian airlines. Not to mention covering up all kinds of disasters. They have no credibility left and that's their own doing.
Are you looking for a bunch of flowers lol you sure know where to pick them Mr :D
Oh Christ... they're evergreen trees! 🤦♂️
Obviously the West has skewed the poll:-
As I see it, things are so critical now Zelenskyy would not make a video like this off his own bat without consulting with NATO. And obviously NATO gave him the go ahead, which means...
Check out the flowers and the tree's and shrubs, zero color or leaves on the ground. The bedding plants are summer bedding. They should be off color by now.
The ground is impeccably clean, no fall.
Sergei Naryshkin was the poor bastard that was sweating bullets when Putin publicly scolded him for letting the Donbas annexation plan out of the bag back in the February 22nd. Surprised he didn't present the evidence that the US caused the explosions 6 months before they even happened.
Andrei Tarkovsky it aint....
Applying is one thing, being accepted is another. We all know it's not going to happen for the foreseeable future
It being rejected is not the point. it's the act of applying that is the point. It's basically 2 fingers up at Russia in response to today's dog & pony show in Moscow.
I've already annexed it for my Baltic bolthole, so you'll hear nothing about it again. 😁
You're not perplexed, say what you are really thinking and quit Jaq'ing yourself.
News from Lyman, unsubstantiated.
