He wouldn't have had the license for that speech (as much) pre gas lines blowing up.
Now it's not Russia V Ukraine but Russia V USA, for his own populace.
And who will lead this fight?
VLADIMER PUTIN.
That may explain the "sans" - "Dispute?, what dispute?" - you never know, NATO might be "good with a pen" too.
Not everyone in Nato wants Ukraine in Nato,
So no Ukraine will not be joining Nato any time soon unfortunately
I would not be surprised at all that Russians will lap this up as a win and support putin in it. Like most have. Those who didn't were few and/or left. The more recent fleeing was to save their own skins when Ukrainians being murdered got too real for them.
Actually now that I think of it, even more bizzare as Stalin fully backed the same mass bombing of German cities. He was a dab hand at it himself with artillery. And rape. He also stood back and let Warsaw be destroyed so he could take it over more easily after the war. Then again he had carved Poland up with his buddy Adolf before the war so... Then again Russians learn none of this in school. And I can confirm they'll get right twitchy if you point actual history out.
I tried to annex my wifes side of the bed one time, had pretty much the same effect as putin's claim.....
No they won't, but it has nothing to do with having a "territorial dispute"
Accessions have been held up due to disputes, as it requires unanimity (e.g. Cyprus and previously North Macdonia) but its not like there is some hard rule that would stop their acceptance if everyone wanted. That's ultimately not the reason.
No again not everyone in Nato wants Ukraine in Nato ..
Territorial disputes or not 30 + years we have been hearing about Ukraine joining nato , and it could be another ten years and still be discussing it
Intended for his Chinese audience as well I imagine...
Unlikely, unless they are completely fabricated.
The Annexation of Crimea was almost universally popular in Russia because:
Neither of those points is true this time around.
To make matters worse, he's broken the social contract by launching a massively unpopular mobilisation in order to send more young Russian men to die in these territories.
What ??? You held hands with four other guys on your wifes side of the bed ?
Aren't all those rating polls fabricated - I can't imagine a Russian ever been asked his opinion on such matters. Because they are a free soceity...
Being turned down for NATO membership will most likely be accompanied by a nice care parcel to soften the blow. I expect that's why it's being done.
I don't see any evidence that they're applying "sans the 4 republics" as you say.
They don't recognise Russia's claims over them (or over Crimea) so it's unlikely that they would do that.
cut to curb your enthusiasm music and putin in the Hague for war crimes.
The Americans are giving them 13bn ,
But Europe rather than sitting back with some countries sending weapons others not sending any they would be better off sending the 13 EU battle Groups to assist Ukraine in securing all of its borders
Not going to happen
It would be more likely to succeed if they did apply without disputed territorial issues?
It must be time to evict the Russians from Kaliningrad and kickstart Konigsberg again.
I feel with these latest developments must really turn the corner for some countries allowing Ukraine to join Nato
If you think about it if Ukraine joins Nato this will automatically halt any Russian offence and effectively end the war
@Brussels Sprout
I wonder if Putin realises that it only makes his nuclear threat sound all the more hollow if the actual option he has chosen to try and turn the course of battle is to forcibly enlist hundreds of thousands more men?
And if Russia is having problems supplying the men already at the front, how will the Russian war machine cope with having so many more men to supply? There are only so many pot noodles in the pantries across homes in occupied Ukraine and the growing season is coming to an end.
Mind you I did think this week, listening to the Polish ambassadors interview where she was suggesting that all Russians should be confined to, or sent back to Russia, because of what she suggested was their collective shared responsibility for what's happening in Ukraine, due to their failure to act against Putin, I coudn't help but think of how many Poles conspired with both the Russians and the Nazi's, especially when it came to appropriating their Jewish neighbours property and cheering them off to the concentration camps, so many of which were located within Poland itself and functioned with the support of many Poles.
But of course you can't say that in Poland either now or you won't see it in their history books either.
Of course that was 80 years ago and in a different climate to now and shouldn't detract from the support Putin is enjoying from many average Russians.
However it does beg the question should EU and America be doing more to turn the average Russian against Putin and his cronies, rather than giving them an (as they see it, valid) excuse to echo the official Anti western line of persecution fed by the propagandists.
That talk triggers people.....
Very much hands off Konigsberg for some reason
No, Ukraine will likely not be allowed join because if Ukraine joins NATO and invokes article 5 we will see a full on Russia v NATO war and use of any and all weapons (including nuclear)
Darth Putin throwing the toys out the pram
What else would you expect the news to write?
that is like saying this mornings declaration will halt Ukrainian advances in the disputed regions, neither statement are true
Germany again covered themselves in un-glory by voting not to increase weapon shipments to Ukraine. It's frightening how poorly Europe responds to it's own security, like some kind of a death wish.
As for sending actual troops or direct involvement, I would think that won't happen in current circumstances. Though I would hope collectively they will significantly strike russia if it uses WMD's in Ukraine. Ammunition, weapons systems transfers need to be radically increased to Ukraine, it's been too little, too slowly, for too long.
That would be horrific. Nobody wants NATO and Russia to clash.
Would American use Shannon for refueling if the funk hits the fan.
Or do ye think we'd stay neutral.
In fairness, I think that's just a very badly worded tweet (but whoever is composing these tweets should be a hell of a lot more careful when writing them, especially on such a controversial and disputed subject).
No, it would only add legitimacy to Russia's claims and even then they still would be unlikely to be accepted by all of the members. That's because, right now, there is still conflict in the rest of Ukraine:
Any of those would be grounds for declaring Article 5. That's enough to ensure vetoing of Ukraine by the likes of Hungary and probably a few others.
Because the correct response to a brutal war of annexation isn't to launch campaigns of ethnic cleansing and annexation ourselves perhaps?
