It is already well known what sort of an extra burden energy costs and the general increase in basic goods is going to put on households. Any tax cuts and rebates that are coming won't even reach breakeven on that front, so its hardly as if a heap of discretionary spend cash is going to start washing into the economy.
What they've done in Britain however, granting tax cuts to the richest cohort and funding that by borrowings, is stark raving mental. That will drive inflation to 15% and create a massive stagflation effect.
Part of me thinks that Pascal has said to himself
"OK, the next election is gone from FG, we will give the people what they want and then enjoy watching SF/FF have to strip it all back when they take over for the next recession".

Just for other people's reference, I'm single, earn €54K, and gain €22 per week on tax changes alone.
I'd like to see a mechanism whereby people earning below that gain more.
About 16 quid a week for me.
Then 200 a for my next 3 electricity bills.
Inflation still going, carbon tax and then pretty sure they increase it again in the second quarter of 2023 (one on home and one on transport fuels) and then the next electricity hikes and the end of the fuel/ reduced vat in Feb will make it all worth **** all in the end.
They are rushing it in now because they don't want to have people saying they have no money for Christmas otherwise we'd be waiting the usual months to see any gains.

There is a massive difference between:
A) Someone who was working and lost their job and still has to service their rent/mortgage and other expenses a working person has.
B) A lifetime dole recipient.
Person B usually lives in social housing and doesn't have the same outgoings as Person A. Person B has a medical card and almost no medical costs, but person A has to pay all their own medical costs and that of their family. Person B can stop paying their €25-35 per week on social rent and not worry about being evicted, while Person A still has to pay their way or will be turfed out if they can't. Person B is tied into all sorts extra financial supports that Person A has never even heard about.
I know people who have never worked an honest day in their life and claim every benefit from the welfare possible. Core dole, fuel allowance, (fake) disability, back to school, medical and on and on and on. They go on holidays that hard working couples couldn't afford.
Being on the dole temporarily is tough as sh!t. Being on it for years is the easy life. All you need is to sit tight until you get your free 4eva home and your set.
They will need it more right now. Taxation can be a way of redistributing wealth. Of course that can be done.
