Widening of the tax band and help for renters and bills are the main items by the looks of it.
How will this year's budget affect you?
I've never paid much attention to the budget before now, I guess because I never gained anything significant from it. Usually it has made me worse off, but now it seems 2023 will be my year in terms of tax and benefits. Increasing the standard rate cut off point and moving the USC band, boom I'm about €1,000 better off straight away. €600 off electricity on top of that makes me about €1,600 per year better off so I really can't complain at all.
Some parts of the announcements that I'd be interested in are left a bit vague. GP care is to be made free to hundreds of thousands mroe people. But who? no income threshold was given, that might be contentious for people who earn just above whatever threshold is set. I could potentially be even better off out of this budget depending on answer to above
Hospital inpatient fees are to be abolished. Does this mean that going to a&e will now be free or will the €100 charge remain? Depending on how this works, I'm not sure if it's worth my while paying health insurance anymore.
There is additional money to be made available for home energy retrofit grants but there's no specifics. The government currently operates the 'one stop shop' system for registered installers which can only be described as a scam to put public money into the pockets of savvy(or well connected) builders. The system needs to be completely reformed if that money is going to make a difference.
Also the governments rainy day fund and paying down of debt is to be welcomed for long term stability. Overall the government has come out of this looking very well, the opposition have a bit of egg on their face moaning about the 'most vulnerable' after one of the most generous budgets in history. If there is a serious attempt to tackle housing over the next year or 2 I'd say this government could even be re-elected, something unthinkable only 24hours ago.
You do realise in the vast majority of cases low paid work is a stepping stone to higher paid work? People are really thick sometimes.
Not much in it for low and middle income workers
St Vincent de Paul. You inaccurately compared Ireland, UK and America together. 3 completely different countries.
I was doing a comparison and stating how people are looked after better here. That 500000 children is totally inaccurate too.
Hahhaha a house in canada or Oz. Do just spout shite for the craic?
There is possibly a form you need to have stamped by school when the child is 17. I have vague memory of having to get that done at school for my mam which wasn't exactly yesterday so might have changed 😅
If still in full time education yes I imagine so.
In the car on the way home after a hard day's work, I hadn't heard anything about the budget but came on the radio and finally a bit of good news. Maybe a few extra quid in my pocket to keep everything afloat.
Then the moan a minute crew comes on...
No chance I am listening to anything on RTE for rest of the day because I am sure it will be a queue of people lining up to moan because the people who are working hard every day of the week to make a living finally got a few euros back.
Rubbish, they gave money to help people when they needed it and put money away for any unforeseen events. (Another covid surge, the war in Ukraine getting worse and affecting us here more etc).
I swear people really just wanted to government to click their fingers and fix all the issues. If you want the problems to stop, Russia has to stop. It’s just that straightforward.
Pearse Doherty is this out this evening crying foul on behalf of the 'squeezed middle'. A few years ago it was all focus on the lowest household incomes, who I presume now are either a) sewn up in terms of the SF vote or b) well catered for in the budget. Probably both.
Who knows, with this trajectory, in 5 years time he will be crying out for tax breaks for the high earners who drive the economy.
No idea I am not Paschal.
Are the 41 railcars mentioned in the article the same 41 railcars referred to the budgets of 2021 and 2022?
If a child turns 17 in October would they get the double bubble in November?
What happened to homebond? Weren’t they supposed to be an insurance policy for homeowners? Instead we get a levy on blocks to cover pyrite!!
2.6 billion towards infrastructure projects which includes Metro Link.
Why would there be? Is it not fully costed anyway and in the government transport plans?
My understanding is that the current €0.50 per hour subsidy under the NCS will increase to €1.40 per hour, taking a further cost away from you while the childcare provider maintain their same initial charge.
This government support this policy.
Sinn Fein outflanked by today's bonanza.
Is there any detail on how the childcare reduction will work?
Nothing about Metro North.
Get a job then.
The 10% levy on blocks was hard to figure out, big blow to housing.
Mayberry it is for weed but no minister of finance is going to view it as anything but a support to consumer spending given inflation and rate rises are taking 7bn out of the consumer spend this year. He'll look at that money as straight back in to the local economy and back to the Exchequer nearly straight away.
A Life on the dole is no life and I feel that after a certain time it should be cut or a work scheme put in place, even just for their well-being, self respect and to break the cycle, long term unemployed in the State is about 50k, it's not enough, unfortunately for the State to care and that's to everyone's loss
Can't agree more
Probably not. A substantial portion of the population seem to have got it in their heads that they shouldn’t have to pay for anything ever. SF and the rest of the opposition are happy to encourage the delusion
That’s exactly what the funds reallocated from the grants for private cars should be used for- public transport. The state shouldn’t be subsidising private cars.
Department of Social Protection publishes facts and figures about Budget 2023. They don't get their facts right in the new rates of payment:
201552_2e76947c-bb9c-4b28-b462-ed692a77a876.pdf
Check out the rates for QA in various shemes- still all the old ones with no increase! Only the personal rates are correct. I hope they did not do the same in the real budget calculations!
He gets very excited every budget day.
When they bother to actually implement the public transport options, which have been nothing but dreams for 20 years, come talk to me
