Well, how far must the similarity go? I don't think physical effects are the criteria for qualification as a Hitler. What matters is megalomania and how much evil a person is willing to commit. Also, it seems Ukraine has become the new Lebensraum. I would judge these things in terms of the darkness of a person's mind.
Even when subs are hunting other subs it can take some time to pinpoint a target's position even after detection. We the EU ( the US especially) have come a long way in developing the destructive power of bombs. And if push comes to shove, and Putin launches a nuclear strike, they have enough existing fire power to do the job without having to go nuclear. After Sept 11, when the hunt was on for Bin Laden, they dropped "conventional" bombs on the mountains where he and Al-Quaida were thought to be hiding out. The result was that the vibrations penetrated so deep into the mountain, that the survivors who emerged from the deep cave's, were all bleeding from their ears and nose. With that kind of power, what would you need Nuclear for? And that was more than 20 years ago.

The pipeline out of the picture means that there is no incentive for the EU to lift sanctions, ever. How does that benefit Russia? I’m sure there is a way, I just can’t figure it out.

And not long ago as we remember the Russians having drills off the coast of Ireland as well,where there are alot of cables on the seabed.
The way I'd see that is:- " look at what we can do with conventional weapons.....do you really want to see what we can do with our advanced Nuclear weapons? " An I'm pretty sure that will not be lost on the Chinese ( or others ) either.
If it's about the darkness of people's minds, then there are an awful lot of Hitlers out there who just create hell on a much smaller scale. Which is probably something Peterson would actually agree with.
I guess with Putin we are still far from the end game, the next months will maybe show whether he's closer to Hitler (the undisputed GOAT?) or Hussein.
