Widening of the tax band and help for renters and bills are the main items by the looks of it.
How will this year's budget affect you?
I've made this point in another thread, there are a cohort of people who want lower income individuals and families who are already struggling to pay more tax and can't quite articulate why.
What driving people who are just about making ends meet into debt and poverty does for them or the country at large I'm not quite sure. But they want it for some reason.
I'm looking forward to that tbh. It's got to be cheaper than the 12k pa we spend on 3 days childcare for 2 kids in primary.
aside from that not being your original question … it provides a better standard of living for those who don’t work vs those who do that can’t afford 10k for solar, 20k for air to water and the views to match with corner windows and hard landscaping.
I think this is a topic for another thread though.
Paschal has acknowledged that he have one of the highest national debts in the world per capita. And he said they are going to reduce that over the next few years. No chance.
I wonder will be mention the AIB debacle that he ran away from.
The budget isnt out yet so perhaps cool your horses?
Of course, if people on low incomes who pay next to no tax anyway cannot avail of tax reductions well.... because like I said, they pay next to no tax to begin with.
LOL. But its spot on.
This will be the biggest giveaway budget in the history of the state. Over 10 Billion. Yet for the usual crew it wont be enough.
If the government announced 100 billion in measures it still wouldn't be enough.
Budget is on.
Nothing for regular rate payers. People on mid 20s right up to 36k pay income tax so you cool your jets.
I'm alright jack
But its not a "giveaway budget" its a cost of living crisis budget. Majority of us are worse off than last year.
Paying €600 towards an already inflated utility bill isn't a giveaway. The state have profited through their holding in ESB and higher VAT take, your just getting a tiny crumb back.
€12 isn't much to core welfare rates, its the biggest increase yet but we are living in record inflationary times.
Sorry if I don't swallow the media and coalition spin.
I wonder is Robert Troy in the Dail. He did well in budget and his tenants will have an extra 500 quid for him to target.
Lads behind Paschal playing on their phones during a pretty important day for the Dail. Sums it all up. Gobsh1tes.
€9.60 per week its nothing.
Well you mentioned the IMF not me, but to repeat the hollowing out of the tax base where half the country didn't pay any tax resulted in the IMF being called to help rebalance the books. The USC you rave about is a result of this hollowing out, ironicly.
Anyway, the main point of course is this. Ireland has the most progressive tax regime in the OECD, where higher earners pay the vast majority of income taxes. The elephant in the room is course is that there are certain people and parties who want these high earners to pay more, much more, yet proclaim that they are not paying their fair share and why we cannot have Scandinavian level Public Services.
It's nonsense. The reasons why we cant have Scandinavian level of Public services are a) our Public Services are mostly crap run by idiots and need of reform (another story though) b) Half the country doesn't pay income tax which means less money goes into the pot
If the average person on a lower wage worked in Sweden or Denmark or Germany, they would be paying up to 5 times more tax than they do in Ireland.
Yet higher earners are expected to pay tax rates of up to 52% of marginal income and just take it? Come off it!
Have they announced free gaffs for everyone yet?
What should they be doing?
How much income tax in total does one pay, up to 36k
Just see one person. Could be using the calculator app you know. Things people get angry about is ridiculous.
For example, someone on 25k pays approx 12 percent of their gross income to the exchequer.
You may make the argument that's nothing, but to the person paying it, you can be assured it's not nothing.
I'm not making an argument for radically reducing their tax, but the reality is you're at blood from a stone territory for a person that (most likely) has to make rent - and if you want to put a car on the road, or you have a kid, forget it. It's 420 a week to make everything work.
The kicking of lower paid workers doled out by some posters is unbecoming.
Aren't GP cards being massively extended to lower income earners? That's a big saving to a lot of people.
College fees slashed, and bigger reductions for lower income families.
The whinging about nothing for lower income earners is ridiculous.
Maybe turn over your GP or medical card to a middle income earner. Plenty would be happy to take them!
Have seen the two behind him, both at the same time. Spotted a few others too. Looks fcuking terrible.
Bring back old Laser cards or similar to all state benefit recipients, so cards can be used in th Republic only with option to withdraw cash with 10% fees, but not more than 40-50% of weekly payment. There some thoughts about legalisation of cannabis, but leave it to next budget.
I know what I pay on 37k
Same as what you paid up to 36,800. 20% minus your credits.
What's the problem ? Should I not see anything from the cost of living budget. Like everyone else has?
I'll put this simply: I don't lose sleep about people on high incomes in this country. They do well for themselves, and they do well by themselves how they put themselves about in the political system.
Nowhere close. Can be as low as 64.29 a year for a kid.
Elderly patients in a nursing home is 644 a year. Never been near 3k
Personal and employee tax credits have been increased, entry point to the 4.5% USC band has been increased - both benefit the 20k-36k earner.
My point is though that if they lived in other 'more progressive' EU countries they would be paying probably double that, while high earners already pay a lot, and are very compatible to what they pay in Sweden and the like.
52% is too much IMO and it comes it at far too low a threshold. Even if the threshold is raised to 40k this budget its far too low. We are a complete outlier in the western world to have such a high rate on such a low threshold. Yet when we question this, 'we' want to put poor people into the workhouse.
Halving the cost of a late night license for pubs and clubs. Now extend opening hours or just get rid of them.
Yes but the person was complaining that people were sponging, had nice cars and horse boxes etc.
Are you arguing that these house should not be built or should have poor facilities?
Someone worked it out to be worth 2 euro 80 a week.
Do middle and higher earners not benefit from this too?
Agree. Should be nearer €50k.
There should be NO ONE on Jobseekers Allowance for more than a month in this country. There's jobs galore. Make them get off their holes and work!
Yet, these well-connected people have to pay 52% on marginal income. They perhaps are not as powerful as one thinks.
