I don't get Ken at times. He shoots down Eoin's comment that Scotland has 9 players starting who play in the Premier League by indicating the likes of McGinn and McTominay are poor but then he's discussing with David Syned whether Brady or McClean would play. Those 2 would be nowhere near a Scottish team
Anyone else think Ken’s comment that “betting isn’t necessarily a bad thing” during the conversation about the commercial aspects of football the other day was somewhat jarring? I was reminded of it while listening to another podcast on the Acast platform today which was preceded by an online betting ad. I wonder if the lads are now having to compromise some of their “independent member-led journalism”?
First time visiting Italy let alone a Serie A game. I did a bit of research and was aware you must bring passport with you and to match the details on your match ticket. Thought buying ticket through the official Roma FC website was the best bet and only had to wait a few minutes in the queue when notified yesterday. Cost €102 for a pretty good seat.
I know Italy has had it's problems with hooligans and Ultras but didn't know there was bad blood between Roma and Napoli so thanks for the heads up i'll be vigilant to my surroundings. I didn't think away fans were as prevalent at Italian games as in England. Not the same culture in that regard.
Agreed. Pretty sure he has been on a few times over the years and always found him a very good guest.
Harrowing what is going on down there all the same, couldn't believe what I was hearing
Excellent what a game to go to but be careful, there is serious bad blood between Napoli and Roma fans. Even murders in the last decade. The atmosphere will be electric. A packed stadium singing Roma Roma Roma will be unbelievable. If it's your first time attending a game in Italy remember you must bring your passport with you to the game otherwise you will not be left in.
Yeah but Tim needs to think of the poor buck Googling Brazilian striker "Fredgie"...
Yeah, spoke really well. I've zero interest in AFL but would gladly listen if he was on again
Had a few "on this day" tweets about previous all Irelands this month.
Made me feel a little nostalgic really.
Whatever about moving into finals into August, moving them into July is ridiculous.
Rohan was excellent today on the AFL. He really put across his point on racism in Australia very well.
I thought James Horncastle's review of all things Italian football was excellent. I was only notified by Roma FC of tickets for sale for October's game v Napoli yesterday just after listening to Horncastle say that Roma had sold out their last 11 home league games due to fascination of Mourinho and some star signings. I'm looking forward to sampling the atmosphere of the Stadio Olympico and the possibility of it being a top of the table clash.
Actually I listened to it and found it enjoyable enough. Shelton was a good interviewee
A week late to it but the chat with Howard Bryant last week about Roger Federer's retirement and career was very good.
I enjoyed it for what it was. Ron Shelton is an interesting enough guy but I'd have zero interest in his book, Murph kinda struggled to articulate his questions at times though and Mal barely contributed which was a pity
Yeah, I'm similar. I'd love a transworld sport style podcast by the lads but i realise that's not everybody's bag. The amount of complaints when it's not PL is shocking.
On the GAA, if their goal is to help lads in clubs then at least they tried. From the late I know the club seasons seemed to have started a month early though.
They've isolated many of their older fans though. All the older gaa fans i know who live the gaa seem quite disenfranchised. Hard on the oaps who live watching gaa.
I was thinking the GAA season reformat has caused the lads (and other media outlets) problems as normally the later stages of the championships would give them plenty of content to cover in August and September. As a result, you have them scrambling for content such as US Murph on 1 game into NFL, Tennis, Jim Crawford, More movie chat. It doesn't particularly bother me as I like US sports and movies. Not sure why I wrote this now.
I think Murph is the real movie buff out of the three of them.
I wouldn't necessarily agree with anything Ken Early says about movies.
KERMODE VS ken would be an interesting listen.
Film club today -don’t know if I could be bothered with it, if I want to listen to a film podcast I’ll download Kermode and Mayo.
If anyone thinks it’s worth a listen I’d appreciate the heads up, otherwise I think I’ll give it a miss
It's a pretty **** thing to be at. Especially if you are a journalist. To actually put it up, he saw the original tweet (or was sent it), then had to download the image and then tweet it himself. He was called out on it and I am not sure if he acknowledged it. If Ken saw an article of his and then copy and pasted it to the Irish Times without saying it belonged to David Sneyd, I am sure that he wouldn't be too happy.
Or if a comedian saw a joke at a comedy show and then just did the exact same joke at his own show the following day...it would be frowned up.
It's not a huge deal but still, it should be pointed out that he took someone else's material and played it off as his own.
Every football podcast is improved by Horncastle and/or Vickery.
Exactly. I really don't understand people's issues with this type of thing. A friend of mine was laughing at Tim Vickery recently for the same thing. I had to explain to him that Vickery lives in Brazil and is fluent in Portuguese.
I say he does this as he is a fluent Italian speaker so reverts to normal pronunciations when talking and not saying them wrong like we do. He probably can't be arsed saying them wrong anymore around people.
James (I pronounce Italian names with Italian accent) Horncastle.
I like the shapeless quality to the report on sport, reminds me of the early days on Newstalk.
James Horncastle is great
Enjoyed James Horncastle. Was nice hearing some chat about football that exists outside the top 6 in England. Mondays report on sport as usual droned on for far too long. Skipped the chelsea chat as it was boring as....
Who's outraged pet?
Does something have to be considered a really big deal to be posted in this thread?
I'm not remotely outraged and I actually really like him as a contributor on the podcast but I can see why it would annoy people, especially if he has a history of doing it
I think this may be a new low for faux-outrage on this thread.
Is it that big of a deal?
What a gobshite.
