I think the criticism of Sheridans style of play was warranted,however a lot of that would have been glossed over if we had gone further or indeed won the u20.
The manager couldn't be blamed for the slapstick cartoon stuff that lost us the game v Sligo,you just can't account for stuff like that happening not once but a few times in that game.
I didn't think there was much ott criticism. Not that I was aware of anyway. I think he got criticism for the way he played and some of the selections and I would have to say they were fair enough.
Putrid football and success is one thing... sometimes, but the problem was that he we played putrid football and lost so you'd expect criticism. Did we understimate Sligo? I'm not sure we did, we just threw away the game.
I'm perhaps concentrating on some of the stuff that the Tim O'Leary fan club would post. I should probably know better than to pay much heed to empty barrels.
I think there was a bit of underestimation of Sligo from the supporters. I don't think the players did but that doesn't matter now.
You can when you have the best keeper in the county on the bench and 90% of the slapstickness is due to the goalie.
From what I hear he went out of his way to make examples of young lads that he thought were too big for their boots
Who was the best keeper in the county? I've heard people say that Jack Livingston from Breaffy should have been in between the sticks but unless I'm losing my marbles, he was a year or two overage.
Think it might have been Ah Ref podcast that were going on about it.

Jack Livingstone was U20 this year but wasn't on the panel. Jennings from Ballinrobe was another option
I must be losing it so, thought he was a few years older.
Crazy that he made FBD squad or two for the seniors but couldn't make the cut for the U20's.

I always got the impression that if McConville has something to say he says it, or speaks his mind regardless of the timing. This is more of that by the looks of it, it could be taken as sour grapes as he didn't get involved but he is honest about that disapointment and why he thought Dempsey would have been a better option. Id have all the more respect for him for it too!
I'd agree, they seems like honest comments rather than bitterness to me. There's definitely a chance that there could be too many cooks involved in McStay's team but I guess that's McStay's job to make sure everyone knows their role and that everything runs smoothly.
Mcconville always came across as totally honest and I would have loved to have seen him involved in Mayo. He always had big time for us over the years as a pundit and came across as fair. I hope he does well in wicklow
Both Dempsey's and McStay's team were very strong and the no nonsense/straight shooting element of Dempsey and McConville was a big part of the appeal of that team. But I think there's a little bit of irony / hypocrisy with McConville's comments about too many cooks... given that he went a took a job as a chef somewhere else.
I think that's it - Dempsey had announced a team that was larger than what McStay had announced when thing were in the mix. I'm sure there are other counties with backroom teams much larger than McStay has put together to date. I just thought it odd in terms of what he had to say. I'd have a lot of time for McConville but his comments did come across as a bit of sour grapes. Perhaps it was always going to be the way he was going to answer, he's hardly going to make out that McStay had a better ticket compiled when the one he himself was proposed on wasn't selected.
Being honest I'd have been happy with either McStay or Dempsey's team, though McStay ticket has more inter county management experience than what Dempsey was proposing, so possibly shaded it for me.
I think the too many cooks / strong personalities comment is a bit lazy analysis of the McStay ticket as well. I can see where it's coming from and I was guilty of thinking the same initially, but when you look at it:
Rochford is quite happy to be an assistant and he's not a forceful character imo.
McHale is well used to his role with McStay.
Mulligan is new and fresh, he might be a strong character and may have aspirations of having the top job in time, but I would be fairly sure he's there to learn and contribute.
It's a strong team, I think McConville was a little out of order with his comments.
His comments re the backroom team make no sense, if Dempsey got the gig he would have a similar sized team surely? Comes across as bitter and mean spirited tbh, would have expected more from him

TG4 covering Castlebar Knockmore and Breaffy Ballintubber on Sunday from McHale park
Should be two good games but it's misery having them in a +80% empty McHale Park
Have always enjoyed / thought there's a good atmosphere at the double headers. Would have thought that this one should be busier than average given the teams playing, even despite the TV coverage... but the weather might play a big factor in that.
Was at the Knockmore game in Charlestown and while we won, it was harder than it should have been. We were 6 or 7 up with ~15 to go and let Ballagh back into it with some sloppy play, loads of fellas overplaying the ball instead of keeping it simple.
Massive improvement needed to beat Castlebar on Sunday, Orme, Kevin Mc, Dempsey and to a lesser extent Peter Naughton need to improve a lot if we're going to progress. Darren McHale was probably the only one you could say played really well on Sunday, maybe P Ruttledge also.
Castlebar @ 2/1 is huge odds considering they're playing at home 😉

Should be a tight game between us and Castlebar. Fancy Breaffy, Ballina and Westport in the other three
Jason Doc is getting married tomorrow. Congrats to both of them. Hopefully, he'll still be around next year.
I think if you picked the two most unappreciated Mayo footballers, it would be the Doc and Kevin McLoughlin. Not to Mayo supporters, though. They epitomise every thing good about that team. Pure unselfishness. Andy emphasised in his book , that he would never have lasted or made player of the year, without those lads doing the donkey work, covering back and breaking with the ball. Making him look good by supplying the ball so he could finish it off.
All the best Doc, don't even think of retiring.......
