I was watching cpscott on tiktok and youtube other day he's a USA veteran he worked in the logistics side of the army. I highly recommend you watch his videos. He reckons that Putin has no real idea of the state of his military as he purged himself of anyone that gives him bad news, does that ring a bell. Putin was probably believing his own propaganda for a finish.

IMO (as others said), looking on from outside it seems to change little apart from it being propaganda that I doubt will stand up to the stark reality of Russian "mobilisation" for war, even with the level of media & public opinion control the Russian regime seems to have.
That reality is alot of male Russians being at best told to go and work (like serfs?!) for war industries or for the state, or at worst press-ganged to become raw meat for a war that they know Putin + his clique have chosen for reasons very unrelated to what is good for their/their children's future and future of Russia.
So it doesn't really reduce the risks for Putin and his regime of causing some kind of political explosion in Russia. What happens as well if Russia really mobilises for "war" and still continues to fail badly here? That is quite possible (it is probable even) without the Chinese rowing in fully behind Russia to supply all the modern gear and weapons they need to equip this mobilised conscript army so it will be effective. China/Xi don't seem to be very eager to do this, why would they change (just because Putin/Russia decrees there is now a "mobilisation"/war vs the "special operation")? That would be the tail wagging the dog at this stage.
I wonder what all the foreigners playing for russian teams will do? they'd be nuts to honor their contracts. Will FIFA cover them if they walk away?

Explanation of what Putin is up to with his sham referendums. He's trying to claim that if Ukraine advances in any one of the four regions over the so called new "border", it will be regarded by the regime as an invasion of Russia.
1. Neither Ukraine, the US, all the Baltic States, the UK nor Poland want this war to end until Russia is pushed back and its military decimated to the point that it would take decades for it to return to even a purely defensive army.
2. If Russia declares that the Oblasts in question are technically Russian soil, then they are basically putting a gun to their heads and pulling a trigger, as it certainly will not stop Ukraine and will have the danger of escalating the war for the worst for Putin. Once Ukranian artillery get in range of Sevastapol, it's game over. That's the goal here. Nothing else.
Watch how the front will stretch outwards towards the East and Crimea over the next few days, without over-stretching. Its a massive, but careful push to get in range of the ports in Sevastapol.
