Better word for the stable hitch -No more "My Partner"

Partner is altogether entirely grand for firms of solicitors & and similar shysters but I find it a very poor fit when we are talking about emotionally involved intimate relationships.

I've had this itch, for finding a less emotionally cold word to replace "My Partner"

Let's go. 🤔 A new word brings a new world.!

Hate the word when used to describe boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband. Its use was really ramped up here in the 90s, remember Jerry Ryan on 2fm back in the early 90s trying to convince everyone that the afore mentioned terms were outdated and partner was so much more modern, and PC. Maybe leaving the doldrums of the 80s, this was a way some people felt would make them seem more affluent, ready to enter to 21st century, refusing to use those other 'backwards' words. In all the English speaking world, Ireland it seems to me, is the one that uses it most. Cringe. Cringe. Cringe.

My partner always put me in mind of the paranoid type that doesn't want anyone they work with to know anything about their personal life and think that's a mark of professionalism, they are so much more with it (whatever it is ) than colleges that actually mention they have a wife or husband.

They always introduce their partner by the partner's first name and nothing else to colleges, good forbid they would be naming the relationship that would be so Irish the horror of that.

Boyfriend/girlfriend are awkward terms to be using when in your 60s & over, as more often than not your other half will be a tad older than a boy or girl. Still, I remember my late Mum asking her 70 something friend “a birdie tells me you’ve got a new boyfriend!”

A lot of folk use the simple term “friend” during an evolving relationship. I knew somebody who did as she wasn’t sure it would turn out as hoped because of practical distance (each having serious other commitments on different continents), so used the term “special friend”, however he’s now a “friend” as she has a new partner.
