It's been due to end on "december 31st of current calendar year" for the last couple of years, no? Same as the VRT grants etc
I thought I read before that it would stop when we got to 50,000 BEV's on the road.... so perhaps whatever year we do hit 50,000 BEV's (presumably this year?) then that would be the year they wrap it up?
I think the budget was for 50,000 evs to be covered for 500euro per year. Meaning EV 50,001 and beyong are not covered by the scheme
Well, we'll find out pretty soon, budgets due in the next couple of weeks
might need to re-consider the trade from the X to a 3 so........ especially if its newer than 50,000 pervious EV's
Nah, I'm rarely on a toll road anymore. Since moving to wexford it's great to be able to drive to south dublin without having to pay 2 tolls each way!
I'd imagine the initial 50k cars would also lose the incentive, not just the new cars beyond 50k!
No point incentivising a current EV owner... they are already on board. Its new people you need to incentivise.

long read
On the subject of Google Maps, something else they should do is change the shortcuts at the top. It's got buttons for Hotels, Groceries, Restaurants, Petrol and others. They could at least give the option of replacing the Petrol button with Charging.
I just tested it on my route to work and it picked the shortest but not most energy efficient route. The shortest route has very severe hills for the last 7 km while the most efficient does not and is 4km longer. Does it make sense that the car would be more efficient on a 60km journey with a longer more gradual climb than very severe climb for the last 7km. My limited understanding of physics would suggest it should be the same but for my commute, it doesn't seem to be. 🤔. I must test it again next week.
The flatter route is more efficient, but the big question is whether the increase in efficiency is lost by the longer distance
EVs have the advantage on hills that they can regen when going downhill, so they get some of the energy back that they lost going uphill
But, like everything it isn't 100% efficient. So going up 100m and then down 100m isn't "free". You'll have less energy in the battery than when you started
I guess the way to measure the change is to look at the consumption for both routes. You can work out the kWh used by each route and see if ten shorter distance is worth the lower efficiency
Also FWIW, I put in Dublin to Cork into Google maps and selected electric and it still sent me on the motorway. It seems that it still values short journey times over efficiency
I guess ABRP is still the winner
You can use the voice search with it. Handy if you use android auto. Navigate to EV charge point or EV fast charge point should do it.
Tabloid journalism, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. Of course super fast chargers are more expensive but will be the exception to use.
Also omitted how much it took to fill up the ICE and the EV starting and only mentioned topping up.
Glad to see the Sun is maintaining its standards (or lack thererof)
I think if you do a long trip and pay the Ionity base rate it can be more expensive than the equivalent trip with petrol. Of coure in that case it's probably worth signing up to a paid plan to get the lower rate
The other side is that for 90% of your driving you're charging at home at a much cheaper rate. So maybe you've got one or two expensive trips per year, and yeah that's kinda annoying when the charging bill come in, but it's much better than sinking €100 into 1 weeks driving every week of the year
Or get a phev, using both cheaper night rate and cheaper than ionity, petrol.
Why the feck would a phev use Ionity?
Did not say that, but if needed its possible,
Or buy a BEV, and not have to listen to a petrol engine on long journeys 😉
Why would anyone use Ionity on a regular basis? And anyone that does surely has either the Ionity Passport or a better deal from their manufacturer anyway which halves the cost.
You are of course correct, but that really doesnt make a very good headline to confirm the ICE bias now does it. You will never get a job for the sun with that kind of nuisanced thought process.
I found Hertz has a dedicated page for electric car rental although very little results with EVs on my searches. Found an EQB in Dublin with them if anyone is interested, no price you have to call to book. Nice to see clear T&C, specially for electric rental (i.e. return at 75% or higher)

Anyway I got a Polestar 2 or similar for CGN with Europcar and now I'm like a child counting the days. I hope they will not give me a Tesla.
Seriously, this is so true. I've just returned from being abroad with a 500km+ roundtrip in a rental petrol car (Peugeot 2008) and I missed the simplicity of the BEV - smooth drive, instant acceleration, no engine noise.
Although, Peugeot probably deserve an honourable mention for making a petrol car feel, sound and rattle like an old diesel engine (and to combine this with no acceleration to speak of, even in 'sport' mode).
I was delighted to get back into my car at the airport.
That's one reason why I want to drive to holiday destinations rather than fly. I don't want to have to get a crappy ICE for a rental and EV rentals are outregeously expensive. Yes cruising around the Alps in a Tesla is awesome but I'd rather spend my holiday cash on fun activities, like being p!ss drunk at 11am 😂
Also I shudder to think of what condition the clutch will be in if I ever get a manual gearbox for a rental
If you thought Ionity was expensive 😱
I wonder will we see another price hike here soon
I was in Lithuania last October in a brand new Toyota Corolla sh1tbox... all 'sport' mode did was turn the dials from blue to red...... it was fcuking horrendous.
This summer we went in our Model 3 and it was absolutely glorious...
Very interesting video from Fully Charged. Showing off crazy charging speeds and speaks of even faster already in the works.
AionY looks like a great small car.
Toyota, proof they you can put a price on sadness
Mod Note: Moved Applegreen at Ballymount to https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058013818/applegreen-own-brand-chargers
Yeah, I almost count it as a downside of my EV. I travel a fair bit with rental cars, and each time it's an awful driving experience now. It constantly feels like the car is missing a beat. When in reality, its shiny new but its just an ICE !
I used to love trying out all sorts of weird and wonderful cars
