This sunday at 11am in Salthill, the #sundays4safety folks will be showing the "Dutch reach" to folks.
A useful exercise from DCC to illustrate the efficiency of each mode in terms of space
Will buses be diverted off Bohermore to follow this new cross city link?
Hildegarde Naughton estimates the Cross City Link will begin construction in late 2023 though I can't see it. Honestly I'd say it'll be lucky to be started by mid 2024
The M6 ring road for Galway is likely to be another 8-10 years all going well and costs are likely to be close to 1 billion by the time its all said and done according to Grealish based on a letter he's received from TII
the opening line says it all

The biggest overhaul of Galway’s rail infrastructure in over a century is to get underway next summer – with works on the €24 million overhaul of Ceannt Station in the city to commence next June.
just shows how neglected Ceannt Station. €24 million really is nothing for a capital project like this. Should have been done decades ago.
Agree on Cathedral, carraigeway width is sufficient here to do something on the current corridor.
I agree Walsh terrace is very very poor at the minute but in these proposals not sure demolishing and the funneling such volumes of car traffic post demolishing will it be much better here.
I'm hopeful for Galway, between an improved rail service and the cross city bus route. Both projects are far from perfect and a lot more needs to be done but definitely the right direction.
Powered wheels? Like battery assisted wheel chairs?
In other news, the train station is about to undergo major works increasing the platforms to 6
Injuries caused by things with powered wheels.
There is slight possibility, maybe, that the hordes of kids in the Claddagh area have dirt bikes in their sheds with nowhere to ride because they hadn't noticed that the other end of South Park has been wide open all these years.
Seriously though, all this will do is facilitate access for the less mobile. There are no downsides in this location.
I predict easier access for wheelchair users, parents with buggies, cyclists, walkers and so on
Whats your prediction?
With predictable consequences.
A piece of good news, looks like the City Council are starting to get rid of kissing gates. First to go, the ones at South Park. Hopefully more to follow soon
This follows ministerial direction at the beginning of the year that access points must comply with universal access and the free-flow of cycling.
By tying the direction directly to funding, it pretty much ensures these will never be added to any new access points going forward and we should see them removed from virtually everywhere that they currently exist
As I said, his overall assessment is pretty much bang on the money. In particular his points about University Rd, where, in an effort to save, what 6 or 7 spaces, they've removed any possibility of safe cycling infrastructure. Dith those handful of spaces and they'd have space for protected bike lanes.
About the only points I would disagree with would be in relation to his proposal for a route south of the cathedral and his objection to the buildings to be demolished around Walsh's Terrace. That spot is lethal for all users, regardless of mode and there is no way to fix it without making more space through demolition.
He does nicely highlight some of the idiocy though. One example, wtf are these highlighted bits supposed to do for anyone
Which ones out of Interest for you?
I don't believe assessment of the house demolishing in Woodquay is accurate. I.E to facilitate multi story car-parking. Rather car traffic flow is what I see here the main priority of this is here.
(Not that I would object to the Corrib Shopping Centre Multi Story been converted into apartments!!
Apart from that - I think it shows how limited the Bus Connect plan will be for cycling. The do nothing approach for University Road for example is crazy
Yeah I know and I apologize. In the past its been simple to extract the text, dump the wishy washy stuff and just post the basic points, in this case it would have taken hours :/
Jaysus, anyone wanna do a two line TL:DR assessment there.
Some recent materials from a recent council meeting, all related to getting around Galway, by foot, wheels, bus or car
Planning dept report on the proposed new cantilever walkway for the Wolfe Tone Bridge (pdf)
Presentation on the above (powerpoint)
Below are extracts from 2 CEO monthly reports. Apologies for the amount of screenshots, but both were only published today. Tried to paste the text so I could shorten the overall length of the content but its a mess in formatting, so you get screenshots instead
Transport related items from the CEO's July report ()
Later in the report it mentions the laneway work
Further updates were provided in the CEO's Sept report. I'm guessing there is no Aug report due to holidays maybe?
The following is also mentioned later in the report
IrishCycle pulls no punches in the assessment of the BusConnects, Cross City Link project. There's too much to quote to be honest. He raises a lot of very good points, but I wouldn't agree with 100% of his points.
His overall assessment is hard to argue with though
One way was trialled a few years back and people went mad on that stretch.
You can see road is not wide enough for two-way traffic due to private car parking, hence constant footpath driving, right adjacent school too

That's the one I was thinking of, cheers
Good to know they sorted it.
I wasn't aware of those locations. Where in Oranmore is that?
Oranmore ... every single day 😌

They installed bollards, banning right turns was in place long before
Also happens at bottom of Taylors Hill nr Nile Lodge daily.
As soon as I saw that video this morning I was reminded of Kingston Road.
This is Richmond rd in Dublin.
Is there anywhere in Galway with issues like this? If I recall, Taloyrs Hill rd , used to have serious issues with driving like this, not sure if it still does ever since the stopped the right hand turns
Ballybrit and Renmore to tuam all quicker via the motorway but I know people who still go via Claregalway
