Just wondering has anyone noticed trees and plants with a lot more fruit on them this year. I never seen as much berries on our mountain ash trees, and as for our big old native Irish apples trees the tree is alive with apples hasn't ever yielded anything like it in about 20 years. The Grandfather always said to watch for lots of apples and berries as it is a sign of a harsh winter to come. Could have some truth to it, the last few winters have been very mild.
Sheep Ireland would be well advised to ditch him as well, he made a few blunders there and was corrected by the clerk more than once. And I wasn't long in his ring.

Bit of orf in lambs here too. I've goingto use Scabivax on them next year. Just as a reminder, Scabivax seems to be going off the market at the end of October and vets have to return any unsold product so if anyone is thinking of using it, get it soon...
Only ever had orf in pet lambs inside here last year. All I did was offer some Himalayan rock salt and it cleared away. This year the rock salt was offered from the beginning and there wasn't any trace of orf.
I'm not sure if there's something to he taken from that.

When would be the best time to vaccinate ewes lambing from St Patrick's day for Enzo and toxo, never done it before but had problems with it last year. Also what's the cost for both vaccinations?
Toxovax has to be given four weeks before mating and it takes about two weeks to get it, enzovax is similar but is more available

That is a pity if Scabivax is gone off market.....have had to use it here for years as is in the land.
We didn't do baby lambs 2 different years (not consecutive) and ended up with a good few cases each year,it severely impacts on thrive and can't be nice for poor lambs that get it.No cases since we did lambs every Spring at around a month of age.

If you had a bad toxo storm last year the ewes would have some immunity this year but with Enzootic abortion you'd need to be doing them all as ewes abort from year to year with it.
Even if you enzovax all the ewes this year it takes one or two years to be clear of it. Ewes that get affected this year don't abort until next year.
It's expensive but it's only once in the ewes life so when you're in the system you're only doing rplacements after the first year

How long after weaning would it be ok to put the ewes back in with their lambs. Think mine are weaned about 5 weeks or so.

Bought some lambs last week to fatten, were sold as ewes and wethers, mixed pen. I noticed today going through them that some of the "wethers" are still very much in tact. Do lambs done with a burdizzo loose the sack the same as lambs done with rings? Could it be that they are in fact castrated but only recently done?
They don't loose the sack if done by burdizzo but after a period the sack becomes slack. If they were recently done they would have marks from the burdizzo.
For how many weeks before going to the ram would hoggets need to be good on good grass for flushing, or does it depend on there condition?
I'd say I they were in good enough condition already nice grass wouldn't do a whole pile more for them in terms of flushing.
But if you think they are lacking abit, mineral drench, fluke drench (depending on area if it low lieing wet land) and flush of nice grass would be a good option.
