Same in Furbo - it's absolutely ridiculous. Would love to send my children to school by bike or even on foot, reducing the school traffic (and I know others here are the same) - but can't, because that road (R336) is lethal to cross, and I am not putting my child in danger. Yes, it's a 50 zone, but literally no one cares. The school have tried, other residents have tried - and have gotten nowhere in the last 40 years or so.
I would put in a traffic controlled junction at the St James -> Ballybane Road junctionn. The NON-School Streets road.
Then kids can walk through Rahylin Glebe and Clareview Park to get onto the Castlepark Road
It's a sad situation that so many cycle buses are required to get kids to school safely in the mornings.
That it's growing is a clear indicator that demand is there, just the safe infrastructure is lacking.
The new cycle buses will bring the number to 6 operating in the city.
I doubt they'll be in the least bit mortified. It'll be water off a duck's back. It's clear how deeply unpopular they are, but they consider themselves superior to the masses so aren't bothered by the opinions of those they "annoy/nag/sermon".
What's been done in an attempt to build safe infrastructure?
Take over roads that weren't designed for large groups of cyclists doesn't seem to be the answer. Is anyone proposing different approaches?
Could all pedestrians take the footpaths on one side of a road, and cyclists take the other? Then turn the cycle side into a bike lane?
How about cpos for new bike lanes?
Very little, hence the need to provide a safety escort to children cycling to school
For any parents interested
Just a reminder that Salthill is not the only place where drivers are putting pedestrians at risk
But yeah, Salthill still features proudly
Improvement works for Merlin Woods
People intending to enjoy a walk through Merlin Park Woods should be aware that works will be taking place there for the coming week.
Galway City Council is carrying out resurfacing works on paths in the popular woodlands.
The resurfacing works have begun today, and are expected to take one week to complete.
A few random cars parked illegally 😮,maybe for balance you should post a pic of your bike parked legally. You need to get a life.
Another failure from the GP, it was a simple task to make the energy companies pay for micro generation, the GP also rubber stamped a minimum payment of 0 cents per kw to be paid by the energy companies, every other country in Europe have a realistic minimum payment, France for example has a minimum payment of 9c per KW.
The Green party in Ireland has presided over the worst possible deal for consumers and micro generators in Ireland.
On a traffic note, I experienced no delays today.
Wtf has this got to do with Galway traffic
The same as footpaths in Merlin, btw I mention traffic , did you not see it.
You did that randomly for it to be a technicality, main content is completely OT.
This thread is already a crap show with all the twitter posts and OT comments completely unrelated to traffic of the motorized kind as per OP and the pages that followed. If people want twitter posts then sign up for it, should be considered spam and OT.
You do better and not follow those folk down their way.
What does an illegally parked bicycle look like?
This.
Galway County but still relevant.
"not helped by the repeated pressing of the pedestrian lights"
If those pedestrians were to drive, traffic would be even worse. If Claregalway traffic got worse when schools came back, then surely a solution is more pedestrians (and more school buses).
And more PT in general.
Not a ring Road. Just 8km away, Oranmore has a ring Road and traffic had never been worse
The population has exploded there the last 20 years. The amount of housing estates built inside the ring road in Oranmore, the width of the streets in the village and the frequency with which people park their cars on those streets are the cause of the gridlock there.
I think the centre of Oranmore village would be lovely if pedestrianised. No need for local or other traffic to pass through it really.
It should be a lesson on how not to manage growth around ringroads in Galway city and Claregalway, should they ever get built.
That's hilarious.
A rural TD complaining about people attending a funeral...
The lights are on a cycle.
If people actually used the motorway instead of the old road for their Galway to Tuam trip it would surely eradicate the need for a ringroad around Claregalway
Application will be submitted to ABP this Friday for the Cross City Link

Hard copy documents can be viewed in City Hall, from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, from Wednesday 21 September to Friday 18 November 2022.
Bu sparking on Merchants road for tour operators, to be reviewed with a potential move to alternate locations.
If they do move them away, it free's up a lot of space for path widening, bike lanes etc but to do that for the full street they'd need to get rid of the on-street parking too
No sign of this ending, fair play to these folks for continuing to highlight the illegal parking at this location and the danger it represents
Galway Shopping Centre to Tuam Shopping Centre current times (5:30 PM Monday) on Google Maps:
Headford Road and cross country to Tuam Road after Claregalway: 33 minutes (34km)
Tuam Road through Claregalway: 39 minutes (32km)
Motorway: 43 minutes (44.5km)
Ballybrit and Renmore to tuam all quicker via the motorway but I know people who still go via Claregalway
This is Richmond rd in Dublin.
Is there anywhere in Galway with issues like this? If I recall, Taloyrs Hill rd , used to have serious issues with driving like this, not sure if it still does ever since the stopped the right hand turns
As soon as I saw that video this morning I was reminded of Kingston Road.
Also happens at bottom of Taylors Hill nr Nile Lodge daily.
They installed bollards, banning right turns was in place long before
Oranmore ... every single day 😌
