Putin is the wannabe hard man sort who is fragile and can’t have anything negative said about him. The worst thing for him is for people to mock/laugh at him and feel embarrassed. What’s happening now is massively embarrassing for Russia , the impression of their armed forces after ww2 has been evaporated and is now seen as a huge joke.
A complete collapse in Ukraine would probably spell the end for him so what will he do. A full mobilisation would take time and they mightn’t have much of it if anything left by then. Seems the only option he has left then is nuclear. The more desperate he grows I wonder would he? No one really knows. Although it needs more say than from him to be launched but we know how he kills and intimidates anyone who stands in his way.

I imagine that resorting to nukes would only hasten Putin's demise as Russian leader as such a desperate move would probably cause Russia to become further isolated and unable to support itself. I think Putin knows this and is hoping instead that his gambit of freezing Europe will cause a frosting-over of Western support for Ukraine.
