I bought 5 suffolk x ewe lambs. Nice bunch
that guy is from Kilkenny I think is he ?
Would people dose lambs on these results.
Yep anything over 500 it's recommended to dose..
Surprised how high this count is. These lambs were dosed after a previous fec if you remember was very slow in results coming back.
I only dosed 90% of the lambs so wondering would that have an effect on results.
How long after dosing should you leave it to fec again
when did you dose
3 weeks ago, clear drench. Noromectin and cobalt b12.
We just mix the cobalt in with the noromectin. It's 2.5ml cobalt and 10ml noromectin so. Put 250ml to a litre and gave them 13mls
Sounds like you could have a resistance to ivermectin based dose
Yea it looks like Ivermectin isn't working on your farm, Thrive is definitely being affected at 800epg.
You may go with a yellow dose now, test a week after the yellow dose, there should be a 95% kill. We dosed with a yellow dose 3 weeks ago and the FEC is 250 at the moment but was zero a week after dosing. We're testing for a farmer at the moment where neither yellow, clear, or white dose works properly.
I've mixed feelings about leaving 10% undosed but we never dose the ewes here so theres plenty of undosed worms from them. But if you do leave 10% undosed make sure to mark them so that you don't put their dung in the FEC sample and to ensure they aren't undosed the next time
We wouldn't dose ewes here either.
I did mark the lambs that I didn't dose but not sure which dung samples I sent off. I just collected them in the pen. I took a few ones that were running to purposely check. I thought it might be just a meal scour as they started getting meal.
Lambs have thrived since last dose and was just going to give them a dose of cobalt this week.
I'm unsure as of what to do. I'd like to test again to see if we're resistant to ivermectin. My gut tells me we're not. I was surprised the count was high as lambs doing so good.
Other thing is we sent them to a different lab this time but that shouldn't matter anyway
I'd definitely tests for resistance anyway.
How do you test for resistance. Do you dose again and fec in a fortnight
7-10 days after dosing re test..its frightening how much resistance there is to wormers in sheep here
FEC results will only be as dependable as the person taking the samples. Noromectin takes a bit longer to work so you retest in a fortnight after dosing to check the result, at that stage the result should be practically zero yet yours are 8 -900 three weeks after dosing.
To get a proper result needs samples from 10 lambs or 10% of the flock whichever
If the count is really 8-900, you won't feel it rachetting up to 2000 and the lambs won't be thriving then for sure.
If you use a yellow dose you retest a week after dosing
If you are doubting the result do the test again avoiding the marked lambs, sample at least ten lambs in a mob sample, only a marble sized piece from each lamb and see what the result is.
You should be able to pick up the samples by walking through the lambs and watching them to shite in the field, it has to be fresh.
Nick a ziploc bag from the wife and put the sample in it and send it off
Thanks for the advice
So my other half wanted a couple of black ewe lambs to replace 2 old black ewes on their last year
I've managed to pick up 1 dutch spotted x lleyn and 1 dutch spotted x clun forest. Both are fully black...won't put with the ram this year but should be interesting mix 😬 anyone any experience of these breeds?
Clun forest one looks to be the making of a big sheep
What’s the cost of a fertility test?
Our vet charges about 40 euros each for three
I've a few lambs with swollen heads, both ewes and rams. Any idea what caused that?
Photosynthesis? Are their ears swollen and scabby? Charollais I presume.
Texel crosses. Ears are fine, they've been getting Cobalt every weeks since early summer.
Some lambs here are just starting to get orf which seems to be a problem here same time as last year . Would lads just go an vaccinate all lambs to stop it now from going out of control? Is there a withdrawal on vaccination? Will talk to vet tomorrow but said I’d ask for the advice on here also .
If the skin isn't breaking on the lambs they should be alright, it'll take its course.
If there's briars and thistles on the land breaking the skin you'll need an antibiotic spray from the vet to stop infection.
I know you can vaccinate in the face of an orf outbreak but Ive never done it.
The main thing to do is to treat any lambs with open wounds with the antibiotic/ alamycin spray even if you have to get them in every second day.
We used to get it every september too, it seemed to get worse every year, eventually we started to do them at birth with scabivax, no trouble since
do you vaccinate the ewes pre lambing wrangler now or just the lambs at a few weeks old ?
Lambs at a day old,
it's only a scratch on the inside of the front leg,up under the arm if you like,
Make sure and wear gloves etc lads when dealing with orf. I ended up with that on my hand from it last year
Was it sore ?
Got it here as well, dirty bloody thing. Mine got infected.know someome else that got it lately and got cellulitis from it and ended up in hospital with it.
George has gone by his sell by date, lost the Charollais sale for being too fond of certain breeders and not giving the young breeders a chance. Still the same one liners.
