They don't care if they're hit by a car, they're just after that big bicycle money.....
If someone feels so strongly about an issue to the point of joining a local voluntary group to help advocate for change, do their views then become dismissible?
These are still ordinary citizens, mothers and children.
Rentamob.
What does it pay? I'm usually free on a Sunday and wouldn't say no to the cash
Phone Gráinne, 087...
Can't beat the old days.
Fecks sake, I was there on Sunday and didn't see a penny!
Got a 99 cone for myself though so there's that.
These are people asking for safer roads.
It's not like it's a group of private businesses owners that have invested interested in maximising personal profit... but guess which group councillors meet with and get an apparent veto over any public infrastructure changes.
Those feckin "activists" are at it again. Safe cycling to school, who do they think they are
From Brite bikes this evening.
Seriously, wtf
It's vandalism and ASB - but is anyone surprised. The Brite bikes are being littered all over the place and not locked to frames. Totally predictable that kids are going to mess with them.
You may see a bicycle as sacred, but to most kids they're just toys.
Hey guys I found these emails really helpful to resolve my clamping issue
Mod EDIT DM for details
About 20m from a Garda station; double yellows and now Garda traffic cones and yet the illegal parking continues in Salthill...
do you not think this deserves its own thread?
or don't know where the new thread button is....
A city councillor says a committment that ongoing road works on the west side of the city wouldn’t begin until after the morning rush hour has not been kept.
But Councillor McNelis says the committment given hasn’t been kept and works are having a serious impact on already bad traffic.
This is one that would have possibly kept me in Athenry if it had been done by now as it would have made a bike commute to the city viable
It’s been confirmed that funding will be sought for a new cycleway connecting Athenry to Oranmore.
Deputy Ciaran Cannon says Galway County Council will be seeking an allocation under Minister Eamon Ryan’s Pathfinder grant programme.
The Garda cones are useful guides for parking spots it seems
this was posted already,
They're getting results, some movement from the glacially slow powers that be. First some Garda no parking cones (often ignored, as shown above) and now the double yellows have been repainted.
No excuse now for parking there, if the latest changes continue to be ignored I'd say we'll see bollards.
One junction getting a bit safer.
yes parking is a source of great traffic congestion on a street so wide you could park 5/6 cars side by side.
as if this junction was unsafe to start with, i have many times crossed this section with pram in hand and not once i did feel that this was not safe. perhaps i applied common sense and patience, snowflakes should try it sometime.
I don't think that's the point, it's more the disregard for road traffic law and lack of enforcement of same. The road is indeed very wide here and is a bit hostile to pedestrians. The lanes should be narrowed, paths widened, on street parking formalised and cycle lanes added. All of this can fit in that space and would hugely improve the look of the section of the prom.
lack of enforcement is a widespread issue not just confined to motorists, re painting of lines is a pointless affair without enforcement as its just costs money and to appease the snowflakes. I would like to see traffic light camera's, something to tackle pedestrians walking in front of car's expecting them to stop rather than use a pedestrian crossing especially if within 50 meters. dealing with cyclist who think they are invincible where they think they above the law and the rules of the road don't apply to them.
It you cater for stupid, it will just grow.
So you want to cater for the stupid in the car instead of for the stupid on foot?
Interesting. Notwithstanding the fact that the rule is 15m rather than 50m, should we take it you would be in favour of pedestrian crossings every 100m in highly trafficked areas seeing as you are setting out 50m as a reasonable distance someone should have to walk to a pedestrian crossing? That would mean increasing the number of pedestrian crossings between Seapoint and Blackrock to 11 from the existing 3, which would be a good thing.
But I still can't get my head around the logic that says those who are travelling on foot and exposed to the wind, rain and cold, should add an extra 2 minutes to their journey to walk to and wait at a pedestrian crossing, just so that those who are already warm and dry and sitting on a comfy seat can save a few seconds on their journey?
The inexorable growth of traffic in Galway would seem to confirm that. Indeed its one of the main criticisms of the proposed ring road i.e. It's stupid because it'll just lead to more congestion
referring to all (ped, cyclist and motorist), well aware that some drivers shouldn't be on the road and/or forced to re take their test. Problem is enforcement, and the likelihood of getting caught... even if caught could probably get off with a warning , ah sure you won't be doing that again now? ah no guard i'll be good
Those cars are not parked, the Passat is turning left judging by his indicator?
no excuse to run in front of vehicles expecting them to stop, getting their attention and they stop to cross which i do v often myself. as for the weather comment - get dressed for the elements. such a BS comment.
wise man brings a coat on a fine day.
and the cyclist propaganda machines on twitter and here would make things better if they got their way? For salthill people are going to drive there, pedestrians as pointed earlier seems to need to run across roads as they forgot their coat, cycling isn't viable outside of town to there and isn't sufficient PT outside or inside of galway. Brite bikes are great, a tad expensive i would say for some but their available spots grows and better than the coca cola bikes or what ever they are now called.
a road will only have a certain amount of throughput, which id say its been at capacity for years.
The City Council has made an order for the closure of Newtownsmith from its junction with the R863 to the entrance to the Mercy Convent carpark.
The road will be closed from 6pm on Friday, September 23 until 12am on Friday, October 28.
This is to allow construction work to take place on the new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycling bridge.
Upgrade works will also be carried out on the Newtownsmith carriageway during this time.
Temporary diversion routes will be in place via Mary Street (L-5096) and St. Francis Street (R866)
Hopefully this means they are about to drop the bridge sections in
