I don't think I have ever had a conversation with another human where I used their pronoun. If you know them use their name, if not I still cant see how you would refer to another person by just a pronoun unless their name was actually a pronoun like when prince became symbol.
That's what they want to be called...?
Yes. Do you?
Because life?
"Joe, collect up those books, please, and drop the maths ones to Mary, she'll need them later today. And John will need the Irish ones, they're doing some research."
So why are preferred pronouns even an issue if one never uses any pronoun when talking face to face with a trans person?
Still a gender binary though...
Genuine question, really?
Ok, fair enough.
No. Trans people should be addressed by their name when you're talking to them. Just like everyone else. Not sure how you'd think otherwise.
Just agree that everything trans is wonderful and bright. There are no dissenting voices allowed on boards on this issue
Genuine question, if you can't answer that is fine. Should new subscribers just lurk forever? Or not bother subscribing at all?
There's a lot of low-post newbie accounts around here lately, asking rather troll-like questions.
Legal categories have indeed been established. The categories are "male" and "female", and a person can apply to be recognised as one or the other. It's been that way since 2015, when the Gender Recognition Act was passed by the Oireachtas. The sky has not fallen in.
The paperwork to have him arrested hasn't been issued yet so I doubt he's been arrested.
There is a difference between shortening a name or even using a nick name but using a girls name to a boy?
Personally I will never accept a person who changes sex is an ordinary male or female.
They are a trans male or female and a legal category needs to be established.
Literally 1984
Disagreeing with your church doesn't automatically make you blasphemous, though. Plenty of Catholics - practicing and otherwise - voted in favour of equa marriage. While the church disagreed with the concept, it never called called anyone blasphemous, and ultimately accepted the outcome.
If Burke felt he was being put in a blasphemous position, he should have resigned and thus honoured his beliefs
"The Church of Ireland’s teaching recognises two genders – male and female – and is unchanged."
Just to come in on this point, as far as I know, the student had requested to be referred to using 'they/theirs' pronouns, rather than he or her, I'm not sure if they had even changed their name...
Not many Orwell fans on this thread, it seems. Has he been cancelled?
You are being disingenous by framing it like that. You know full well it's not merely 'calling someone the name they request'. This is not Robert asking to be called Bob. It's Robert saying that he's a woman called Mary and you need to affirm his belief.
Many Christian fundamentalists don't accept transgender practices or ideology. It runs contrary to their faith. They would say that transgenders are denying the reality of who god made them, or something to that effect. So they would be sinning if they went along with it.
People often go by middle names as well. My grandfather always called me by my middle name from when I was born and it just stuck, after a while.
Oddly enough, JK Rowling used the initials because the publishers felt boys were unlikely to read a book written by a woman. She once siad in an interview that she used to occaisonally get fan letters that opened with "Dear Mr Rowling...."
Careful now, Loueze, you're using logic. Or, Luis - I wouldn't like to assume! (I've worked with a Luis who pronounced it like Louise!)
Not to mention people who go by initials. Plenty of P.J.s around. And at least one J.K., who, ironically, goes by her initials because she didn't want to be seen as a woman in case it hurt her sales!
Deleted, double post
Can you point me to where its considered blasphemous to call a person by the name they request?
But allowing someone to bring their religious prejudices into a workplace where kids are involved is fine...?
he clearly doesnt want to ever work in education ever again, or maybe even work at all!
'You are a slow learner, Winston."
"How can I help it? How can I help but see what is in front of my eyes? Two and two are four."
"Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.
Names don’t have gender, just common usage.
Also, where is the blasphemy? Is the a secret 11th commandment? Thou shalt not change pronouns.
Just because religious people don’t like something doesn’t mean it actually goes against any teaching of their religion. And by espousing judgement, anger and ridicule over tolerance, love and understanding those who profess to be Christian are actually going against the basic tenets of their supposed religion. But the truth is, the Christian fundamentalists are not true Christians at all. It’s just a flag of convenience to hide their hate.
I don't think its been confirmed anywhere what name the teacher was asked to use.
And while the school may have a religious ethos, it was supportive of the request from the student and their parents. They were following their own policy on inclusion, and asked their employee to do the same.
The teacher's personal religious beliefs are their own business and in my opinion, should have been left at the school gate.
If the teacher isn't prepared to respect the student's wishes in this matter, or their employer's inclusion policy, then it's the teacher who is in the wrong job, and at the wrong school.
Let them go and teach according their religious beliefs in their Mammy's school.
"A name is just a bloody name!"
In this case it's not a name that is coincidentally female. The student has chosen a female name and he wants the teacher to use it in order to take an active role in his gender inversion. He wants the teacher to be a participant in his attempt to masquerade as a woman.
If someone consents to going along with this charade then that's fine, it's their choice. But forcing a religious person in a specifically religious school to go along with something that is considered blasphemous according to their religion is an unacceptable demand.
Noone ever gave a crap about Peggy really being Margaret or Gabriel having the middle name Mary before until they could use it to to rant about trans people.
Honestly - The trans population is absolutely tiny. All these bigoted obsessions about trans people are insane really. Have people nothing else to do in their lives than bigoted rants about trans people.
No. Its not. What is it with the slippery slope and animals. Sure if we believed people like you we'd have legal man and horse marriage in Ireland.
