Define what is a boys name and what is a girls name.
If someone called James asked you to call them "Jim" would you refuse because it was not their legal name? Or Elizabeth /Liz? Anthony /Tony. Robert /Bob. Andrew /Andy?
Whats the difference between Joe/Jo or Francis/Frances? What about gender neutral names like Taylor? Jordan? Jude? Jesse?

I can envisage a student telling the teacher that they want to be called Toolbox-Hackballscross-Crossbar and the teacher shouting back saying “I don’t care what you want to be called, I’m just going to call you Piss Pot”.

Occurs to me to ask: wasn't it the pronouns he refused to use rather than the child's chosen name? Or both?
One's name is a very personal thing not to be belittled or interpreted by any individual or organisation bringing their feelings or agendas into play.

You misunderstand me.
There are small attributes associated with a male's brain and a female's brain, such as the amygdala, inferior parietal lobe and the SDN-POA being bigger in men (as well as the entire brain being typically bigger). The latter having being noted in gay men to have a similar size to straight women than straight men. Alternatively, the hippocampus in a woman is larger than a man's. (all of which is in the Journel of Neuroscience Research, 2017). So are there observable differences? Yes. Do these differences translate to much in daily life? Nope. It used to be believed they were major differences, but now they're finding it's not so much the case, which is my point.
I did not say biological sex is a spectrum. I said that some of the attributes previously assigned to "male brains" or "female brains" are now recognised as just a spectrum regardless. If by that comment you refer to where I said sex isn't binary, then yes, the existence of multiple forms of DSDs proves that. It doesn't mean it's a spectrum.

I have a policy of calling people whatever name they choose to be called.
I have been doing this for years and it works fine, never a problem.

If the child in question requests it, what's the problem? I know loads of people who don't use their legal names. In one case, I only found it wasn't their legal name five years after meeting them.

Nobody is being forced just don’t be a dick about it. Do you refer to celebrities by their names they use ? For example lady gaga? We all do it but it’s been made an issue by the right.

I honestly don't know a huge amount about transgender issues but it seems wrong that you should be forced to call a boy by a girls name. If that name is not their legal name
However the teacher in question has gone over board. Way over board.

He is probably not suited for the ideology of a COI school, traditionally they have always been far more liberal the likes of a Christian brothers or Jesuits school etc. I send my children to one they are all about inclusiveness and celebrating gay pride etc. For example, the school uniform list was changed a few years ago to remove all reference of specific items for males and females only.
