The student in question would be deemed in a minority , and judging by the comments / opinions here on this thread , the teacher could / would be deemed in another minority .
Surely , the school in question here is totally at fault , seeing as they ( the school) , could not cater for both " minorities" ( instead of " going nuclear" ) .
Also , is it correct and proper that an employer should force you to carry out work that goes against your beliefs ?
Yes but if he is convicted he will never be allowed in class again so at least he can't upset any students with his ideas.

The school sided with the student (rightly or wrongly) and at that point, the teacher has two options: comply or find alternative employment. He wasn't forced to do anything.
Alternatively, he could have escalated it to DoE or whatever board oversees workplace disputes in public service environments (although he'd probably have been reminded that teachers are not supposed to being personal agendas into classrooms, so it probably wouldn't have worked)
The family actually won one case recently enough.

He took issue with something that his Employer requested him to do and rather than resolve that issue in a mature and professional manner he has behaved abominably. Simple as that.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with Pronouns , it's got to do with an entitled twat being a complete tool and making everyones life awful.
Here's a little test.
Replace Step 1 with "The School make a completely legal and reasonable request for all staff to only park their cars in the designated car parking spaces"
Now imagine a Teacher did all the other things listed because the school asked him to park in a particular spot.
