I really think that depends tbh. One nuke fired at a small sized Ukrainian city or even Kyiv i really don't think we'd see a full response from the west as that would mean the end of humanity as we know it. Remember Ukraine isn't in NATO and i believe the west no matter what they may say in the public sphere aren't prepared to take that step.

The only thing holding Putin in check is the fear of retaliation, and if he uses a nuke once, all cards are off the table. A nuclear strike by Putin will bring NATO into it, because the fallout will drift across borders into NATO Country's, and be rightfully considered an attack, triggering Article 5. He will be hit so hard and so fast with everything the west and NATO have, that the Russia military and possibly large amounts of Russia will be annihilated. The first one will trigger the last one. And he knows this, and its why he has not pushed the button.
Yeah a nuclear launch of any magnitude would probably warrant a NATO response. I'd even suggest that if Russia were to blow up the nuclear power plants, that would cause an intervention.
I dont forsee that happening though.

If NATO claim a radiation leak from a nuclear powerplant is enough to trigger article 5,then a nuclear strike definately will be enough to trigger it

Russians have been prepared for the last 70+ year's for nuclear war , they are not like the rest of the world outside their borders.

I think at this stage, if Putin needed to declare war in order to moblise the masses, he'd just change the definition/law and replace war with special military operation.

But what would Russia gain by a tactical nuke? They would be despised forever by the civilized world and they would only strengthen western resolve. Russia would suffer greatly from it and would make limited military gains.

I have been following the story... their transponders are on and they are not doing a great deal. Those Russian ships are such fuel guzzlers they need an oil tanker to go with them. A load of showboating and not much else by the look of it.

Saying it is the easy part.
The russians have been informed that any use of Nuclear or chemical weapons will rersylt in a full scale convential Nato attack. Nato will immediatly achieve air superority over the whole of Ukraine and will use convential weapons and munitions to punish and humilate Russia.
To follow that logic, that means Russia will launch the rest of its nuclear arsenal as NATO attacks.
It’s in their war doctrine to use nuclear weapons if a war looks lost.
so we’d be in MAD territory.
