Basically, the military will start running the operation that works with the Ukrainian military, reporting to a general. A real US general not the jumped up Putler lackies that cover themselves in medals.
The various writers are saying this is a big sign the US is in it for the long haul and aren't seeing the war ending soon. Operationally this is a big deal, the US military running the whole 'acquire and ship' operation under military command means it should run very well.
But, the conflict lasting very long is bad and will be bad for Ukraine, "war is hell."

* For most part aid to Ukraine came from outside of Europe mostly from US who are energy independent (80c a liter to fill gasoline) most of promised European aid hasn’t actually for most part yet materialised
* Every country bordering Russia from Finland to Romania are calling for even more sanctions and tightening the screws, not less
* basic human psychology will ensure majority when presented with a clear “evil” who are daily committing atrocities (we up to concentration camps stage now) will demand retribution and punishment
* the giant imbalance in economies with west being 50x larger than Russia
* it keeps Ukraine in news, when Putin if he was smart should be doing everything possible to make this a forgotten conflict
* covid which was exponentially more serious economic issue than this

I disagree completely - this conflict will have far greater impact on small businesses in Ireland and the ordinary Irish citizen than Covid ever did. Inflation was low during the Covid years and government supports were there at least to help compensate those whose work was suspended. People who maintained incomes spent less and saved more and so on.
Now we see the biggest rise in inflation for decades, the ordinary consumer has less discretionary room to spend and there are few state supports for those effected. I can tell you as someone running a small business that sales have dropped noticeably since March. It's like someone has put a kink in the hosepipe and just a half flow is getting through.
We still have to do the right thing and take the hit to help Ukraine defend itself and stop this Russian territorial expansion. But it's going to hit many/ most of us a lot harder than Covid has.

I remember long before the war started in Ukraine, or even indeed Syria, Russians used every trick in the book to avoid military service, and this was in peace time. So I can't see its recruitment program being a success now in a time of war, with the body bag and injury levels rising.
Let's hope so. I watched a very good documentary the other night on the last 9 years in Ukraine, from Maidan up to the invasion and it made for depressing viewing, the nationalism and demonisation on both sides very reminiscent of the Troubles back in their darkest days. Even if one side manages to win, it's very hard to imagine lasting peace in the eastern part of the country

Honestly doing the right thing is not even a thought to be contemplated. If it’s not Ukranian heads on a stick it will be polish heads on a stick and then German and Dutch and Irish heads on a stick.
