Oh, I was going by the UK Aldi link posted. They are 1Kg.
The gouging is even worse that originally thought!
If i remember right they were €1.59 when they were first available, maybe cheaper.
Last time I got them a few months ago they were €1.79
iirc when they were first introduced around 3 years ago now they were 1.49 which then rose to 1.79 and they were that price for a fair while before the recent food inflation kicked in and now they are 2.49 for a 800g bag
Interesting though that 1kg of them in the UK is £1.59 which is 1.88. If they were selling them in 1kg bags here the price would be 3.11 compared to 1.88 in the UK. So we're being charged 65% more than Aldi in the UK for the same product. I cant see how that is anything other than price gouging on a popular product.
I picked them up for €2.39 last night. Never had them so was curious despite price complaints.
I liked the salt and pepper fries but they seem to have gotten rid of them
Spot on I've been saying it for ages, our food has gotten too cheap and now we have to adjust to spending more on it now.
The skin on fries were 2.19 today in Naas
These spring rolls are nice. Got them twice now, and both times I enjoyed them - with pakoras or falafels - also very nice

The Pakoras or Falafels take 6-7 minutes and the Spring Rolls, 11 minutes longer.
Regarding the Skin On Fries, it says that they are €1.39 here

It says €2.39 on the link.
I find M&S Are reliable for pipers and dad and away the best for roasties. Roasties are great - but perhaps try par boiling with skin on, drain and put into a roasting tin, be liberal with olive oil and add some sea salt, garlic bulbs and herbs (rosemary if you have it). Heaven on a plate.
All this time I didn't know Aldi had a site where you could see their regular stock.
Their versions of mighty munch and skips are identical to the real thing.
This price rise has nothing to do with food being too cheap. If it had, ALL potato products would see a similar price increase. This is just pure price gouging of a popular product. If it's anything else, explain 99c packets of wedges.
I highly doubt a red cent of this will go anywhere near producers but will go instead, straight to shareholders and the shop owners pockets.
Much as I like Aldi/Lidl they're just as likely as the rest to raise their prices if they think they can get away with it.
None in stock online in Tesco LV either :(
I made my roasties with the roosters and they were fine, take a little longer to brown, - I just prefer maris pipers.
I might try M&S if I'm down near Liffey Valley, thanks for the tip.
I am almost certain I saw Maris Pipers in Lidl the other day.
Sorry, I must have mistyped and not noticed. Yes, €2.39.
Thanks.
Planning a trip to Lidl for their bakery tomorrow so will have a look ;)
The Moser Roth orange mousse chocolate bar is absolutely delicious.
It's like a fancy Jaffa cake.

Had that before - absolutley divine!
Charging what people are willing to pay for a product is pretty much how the free market economy works.
You, I or anyone else here has no idea why the cost of this product has increased. There is more to the cost of a product than the main ingredient. You just don't know (no matter how much you think you do).
Still, seems pretty cheap for such swanky, popular chips. Previous price was extremely cheap, to me. . I suspect that the producer just couldn't maintain that price. Would people be happier if they just delisted the product? (because that's the choice that they would have had to make, I suspect).
Supermarkets are extremely competitive and price sensitive. They HATE putting up the price of anything (with good reason - just listen to the bitching here). If you have ever done any business with supermarkets, you'd know this.
You're not wrong, there.
You obviously don't include yourself in the "You or I or anyone else" bit or you wouldn't go on to lecture everyone why it is as it is.
You put up some lovely recipes but I think I'll have to disagree with you that skin on fries are a "swanky" product.
Specially Selected chicken and mushroom pie is nice. Mashed potato topping, not pastry. Tasty.
There's a specially selected beef brisket cottage pie thing that was delish as well. Sauce was very tasty. Much better than the usual standard pies.
Not a recommendation as such, but all their solar powered middle aisle stuff is being sold off for half nothing in my local at the moment.
It's probably nationwide.
All I'm saying is that we don't know why.
You are asserting that it is "price gouging" (whatever that is, exactly).
I don't claim to know the reason, I'm just claiming that it is highly unlikely to be a random price hike because they think they can get away with it. That's just not how supermarkets work.
I'm not telling everyone why it is as it is. I'm merely arguing that I believe the reason you gave for why it is as it is to be wrong. Sorry if this bothers you.
If all their other frozen chips has seen similar price hikes I would accept its was a rising cost of production.
But only the skin on fries have jumped so much afair so it definitely has the appearance of "screwing the customer".
They were €1.39 this afternoon in East Wall.
Anyone notice the fillet steaks (specially selected black Angus) are not as good as they used to be. I would have previously purchased them once every 2 weeks as a special treat and my god they were amazing but in the past month or so they appear to be thinner and not as good quality but the same price of €13.49!
I think the quality of all their steak has come down not just black Angus, Sirlion too.
